Impacts of Principal Coaching on Fostering Equitable School and District Practices

    No full text
The principal role has changed in the past 20 years, making feedback and coaching imperative. Districts with transparent and streamlined support for principals have a greater chance of seeing improvements in student achievement. The role of principal supervisors and coaches is also crucial, as they are the vehicles of support for principals. This qualitative study involved examining the responses of principal supervisors/coaches about their experiences supporting school leaders and public data reflecting school leader satisfaction and barriers in the role. Results highlight the changing role of the school principal and the importance of leading with equity and increasing their efficacy in supporting instruction. The data indicates increased targeted feedback and coaching to principals supports them in being more equitable with leading instruction

    Get PDF
The expectations of kindergarten students have drastically changed over the years. Kindergarten students who have not attended a voluntary pre-kindergarten (VPK) program may be at a disadvantage in behavior and academics. The purpose of this study is to show the benefits of a VPK program. My study includes kindergarten students at the school under study whose progress monitoring scores in the beginning of the year are compared to student’s scores who have never attended a VPK program, the amount of behavior referrals is also compared. The anticipated results are that kindergarten students who attended VPK will out-perform their peers who did not attend any VPK program. The kindergarten students who attended VPK will have less behavior referrals as well

The Developmental Pathways and Treatment Approaches for Maladaptive Perfectionism in Undergraduate Student Athletes

    Get PDF
Developmental and contextual factors may largely contribute to how an undergraduate student athlete develops maladaptive perfectionism (MP) within his or her athletic performance. Being able to understand different possible etiologies of MP will provide enriching clinical information to tailor more in-depth treatment approaches for the student-athlete(s) being impacted by the serious and life-threatening side effects of MP. This literature review provides a comprehensive summary on MP and how it may manifest in the athlete, in addition to how it can mature and intensify throughout one’s athletic career. Treatment approaches for MP in undergraduate student athletes will be discussed in how it dovetails with diverse and cultural factors to consider in the athlete’s conceptualization. Clinical implications will include methods that continue to bridge the stigmatized gap between college counseling centers and the university’s athletic departments

    Get PDF
The present study experimentally investigated the development of depressive symptoms in adolescents who have been exposed to community violence. Participants (N=334) were asked to take a survey of 81 questions addressing one’s exposure to neighborhood violence, resilience, and depressive symptoms. Participants exposed to community violence reported more depressive symptoms in every category except Ineffectiveness. Participants who were exposed to community violence also reported higher resilience levels. Given the results, more research is needed to understand the specific factors of resilience that may prevent adolescents exposed to community violence from developing depressive symptoms

Uniting African Philosophy with Traditional African Dance Rituals to Help Heal Mental Health Symptoms from the Impact of the African Diaspora

    Get PDF
The mental health challenges of members of the African diaspora have been a worldwide occurrence for centuries, initially beginning with the transatlantic slave trade. Africans were scattered abroad to different countries and subjected to the severe psychological impact of enslavement. Despite the considerable financial systemic pressure of profit in the slave trade, it caused significant harm to the enslaved Africans and their descendants by erasing Africa\u27s memory and their healing traditions from the hearts and minds of the population. Severe mental health symptoms can arise from oppression and the impact of the African diaspora. This dispersion has left many African Americans with a lack of cultural identity, depression, substance use, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (Monteiro & Wall, 2011). African descendants from many backgrounds have few cultural-related treatments. This paper explored the mental health consequences that have resulted from the impact of the African diaspora. It reviewed and discussed the literature on Afrocentric Kawaida principles and African dance rituals related to the process of healing and its applicability to people of color. It provided examples of African healing dance practices as a therapeutic aspect of the historical roots in north Africa. The author proposed the potential utility of using Afrocentric dance interventions with an African philosophy-centered framework and examined the concepts that are culturally relevant to aid people of color subjected to oppression from the African diaspora

Becoming Through Conversation--I, You, We, Me, & Us: Conceptualizing Silence, Voice, Listening, and Love With Adolescents With Cerebral Palsy Who Do Not Speak

    No full text
Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy who do not speak and use augmentative and assistive technology often experience conversations that disregard their modes of communication or exclude them. Ableism centered on communication and technology is often at the root of how these adolescents are talked about, talked over, or left out of communication. I used a post-modern and post-human qualitative research approach, plugging in theory, literature, song lyrics, and my personal experiences as an insider, as the mother of an adolescent with Cerebral Palsy who does not speak. I conducted conversations with youth collaborators and interviewed their mothers about perceptions, theirs and others, of what it means to communicate. Insights into conversations that allow us to become and be who we are, rather than identities we are assigned, focused on patience, presence, and a belief in presumptive competence

An Evaluation of Educator Preparedness in Content Area and Disciplinary Literacies in the High School Classroom

    Get PDF
A secondary education debate that currently exists between the content area and disciplinary literacy is how content area and disciplinary literacy strategies and educator preparedness to teach those components to fit together to further student achievement. The purpose of my study was to evaluate if educators are prepared to teach content area and disciplinary literacy in high school content area classrooms. The context of this evaluation was to seek information from teachers and administrators about how literacy is integrated within high school classrooms in various communities across the United States. My study demonstrated both quantitative and qualitative data that reflect varied levels of teacher and administrator awareness. I recommended processes to put in place to raise awareness and integrate literacy skills within a high school classroom

Trauma-Informed Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Substance Abuse

    Get PDF
The high co-morbidity of trauma and substance use disorders has prompted the need for more trauma-informed care within the available substance abuse treatments. The purpose of this research was to dissect and identify the strengths of two empirically studied treatment approaches for trauma and substance abuse. Furthermore, a suggested protocol was defined, showing the integration of these two models as a proposed treatment modality for trauma and substance abuse populations. Implications and recommendations for further research on this topic are also highlighted

THE IMPACT OF FORMAL TEACHER-LED INSTRUCTIONAL COACHING

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of teacher leadership through instructional coaching. This study was designed to find the appropriate structures that promote teacher leadership with a specific focus on using a distributed leadership model of school leadership that develops and promotes teacher-led instructional coaching. This will enable school leaders to create a shared vision and outline steps to formally add teacher leadership roles in their school organizations. In addition, it will allow for a more streamlined organizational process, leading to a more effective and efficient leadership. Two school districts outside of Chicago were used to collect data on school leader perceptions of distributed leadership through the use of teacher-led instructional coaching. There was also an examination of how teacher leaders’ understanding of instructional coaching contributes to the growth of teacher practice. The study involved looking at a variety of instructional coaching models that teacher leaders can use, along with what school administrators need to set up a distributed leadership model to promote teacher-led instructional coaching. Policy was formed to assist in the selection of teacher leaders, along with how this selection influences equitable access to leadership opportunities for teachers in school districts
