The main goal of this study was to evaluate the presence of oxidative damage and to quantify its level in gestational diabetes. Methods. Thirty-six healthy women and thirty-six women with gestational diabetes were studied in the three trimesters of pregnancy regarding their levels of oxidative stress markers. These women were diagnosed with diabetes in the second trimester of pregnancy. Blood glucose levels after 100g glucose tolerance test were higher than 190, 165 or 145 mg/dl, 1, 2 or 3 hours after glucose intake. Results. The group of women with gestational diabetes had higher serum malondialdehyde levels, with significant differences between groups in the first and second trimester. The mean values of serum glutathione peroxidase activity in the diabetic women were significantly lower in the first trimester. In the group of women with gestational diabetes there was a negative linear correlation between serum malondialdehyde concentration and glutathione peroxidase activity in the second and third trimester. Conclusions. In this observational and longitudinal study in pregnant women, the alterations attributable to oxidative stress were present before the biochemical detection of the HbA1c increase. Usual recommendations once GD is detected (adequate metabolic control, as well as any other normally proposed to these patients) lowered the concentration of malondialdehyde at the end of pregnancy to the same levels of the healthy controls. Serum glutathione peroxidase activity in women with gestational diabetes increased during the gestational period

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0149472The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of serum type II collagen cleavage epitope and serum hyaluronic acid as biomarkers for treatment monitoring in osteoarthritic dogs. For this purpose, a treatment model based on mesenchymal stem cells derived from adipose tissue combined with plasma rich in growth factors was used. This clinical study included 10 dogs with hip osteoarthritis. Both analytes were measured in serum at baseline, just before applying the treatment, and 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment. These results were compared with those obtained from force plate analysis using the same animals during the same study period. Levels of type II collagen cleavage epitope decreased and those of hyaluronic acid increased with clinical improvement objectively verified via force plate analysis, suggesting these two biomarkers could be effective as indicators of clinical development of joint disease in dogs.

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://bmcvetres.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12917-016-0852-zBackground: Subjective pain assessment scales have been widely used for assessing lameness in response to pain, but the accuracy of these scales has been questioned. To assess scale accuracy, 10 lame, presa Canario dogs with osteoarthritis (OA) associated with bilateral hip dysplasia were first treated with mesenchymal stem cells. Then, potential lameness improvement was analyzed using two pain scales (Bioarth and visual analog scale). These data were compared with similar data collected using a force platform with the same animals during a period of 6 months after treatment. Results: The F test for intraclass correlation showed that concordance in pain/lameness scores between the 2 measuring methodologies was not significant (P value ≥ 0.9213; 95 % confidence interval, –0.56, 0.11). Although subjective pain assessment showed improvement after 6 months, force platform data demonstrated those same animals had returned to the initial lameness state. Conclusion: Use of pain assessment scales to measure lameness associated with OA did not have great accuracy and concordance when compared with quantitative force platform gait analysis

The debate on rare diseases : a look at media response / Antonio M. Bañón Hernández and Josep A. Solves Almela.

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://ojs.uv.es/index.php/Metode/article/view/7188/7809Este monográfico lleva por título "Science grid : the public understanding of science".Rare diseases (RDs) are those that affect fewer than five people in every 10,000. There are around 7,000 RDs, they are difficult to diagnose and very few have a treatment. This article explores how the media report on the arguments and counter-arguments regarding the access to drugs for these pathologies, with critical discourse analysis for the case of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. We concluded that, in times of crisis, the debate polarises around economic arguments (the price of drugs), reinforced by doubts about their healing effectiveness

Personalist bioethics in the Romano Guardini's thought

Controlled, blinded force platform analysis of the effect of intraarticular injection of autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells associated to PRGF-Endoret in osteoarthritic dogs / José M. Vilar ... [et al.].

Este artículo se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: https://bmcvetres.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1746-6148-9-131Background: Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell (ADMSC) therapy in regenerative medicine is a rapidly growing area of research and is currently also being used to treat osteoarthritis (OA). Force platform analysis has been consistently used to verify the efficacy of different therapeutic strategies for the treatment of OA in dogs, but never with AD-MSC. The aim of this study was to use a force platform to measure the efficacy of intraarticular ADMSC administration for limb function improvement in dogs with severe OA. Results: Eight lame dogs with severe hip OA and a control group of 5 sound dogs were used for this study. Results were statistically analyzed to detect a significant increase in peak vertical force (PVF) and vertical impulse (VI) in treated dogs. Mean values of PVF and VI were significantly improved after treatment of the OA groups, reaching 53.02% and 14.84% of body weight, respectively, at day 180, compared with only 43.56% and 12.16% at day 0. Conclusion: This study objectively demonstrated that intraarticular ADMSC therapy resulted in reduced lameness due to OA

Since 1997, the CEU-UCH teaches an annual seminar on communication and disability that in 2005 became a line of research that has already developed various approaches to the subject of study: treatment by the media of disability, both in Spain in Valencia. It is an object already studied in Spain, but sporadic and discontinuously. The purpose of this paper is to present this line of research, the studies carried out, as well as the difficulties and methodological approaches with which the line has been found. So far, the group has developed three investigations into the treatment of disability in the media: first, by our Autonomous Community, which were studied references in newspapers and on television news and radio from noon to a "week type” constructed with alternate days of different weeks, a second treatment on the Spanish media-newspapers, radio and television gave the last Paralympics in Beijing, which includes elements of comparison with the treatment of the Olympics (this research is in its final stage), and third, that has just started, it returns to the discourse on media-Valencian press, radio and television, but now with a more comprehensive and continuous point of view: analyzing the news published in September and October 2009 and applied a content analysis to the references, once found the data from a quantitative measurement. The methodology applied to the latter approach will be refined and applied to a new research along this year, from a sample of Valencia and selecting media for this one in four days between January and June
