Get PDFThere is an analogy between marks, books of merchants and fiscal organization. Our purpose is to explain how the three aspects have impacted in the economic evolution of Valencia and in its financial development. Corsairs’ activity was the reason for marks or commercial reprisals fixation. On the other hand, the books of merchants are a precious instrument to know the structure of medieval commercial companies. Both factors are in the origin of the tax process in Middle Ages.Existe una relación entre marcas, libros de mercaderes y organización hacendística. Nuestro propósito es exponer como los tres aspectos han incidido en la evolución económica de Valencia y en su desarrollo fiscal. La razón de la fijación de represalias comerciales o marcas fue la actividad corsaria. Por otro lado, los libros de mercaderes son el instrumento precioso para conocer la estructura de las compañías comerciales. Ambos factores están en el origen del proceso impositivo de época medieval

Get PDFDuring the 15th century, the city of Valencia increased considerably in population thanks to a strong immigration. The opportunities that the capital of the kingdom offered were numberless and many medical assistants saw a market that could satisfy their interests, in a time where medicine and its practitioners were considered indispensable. At the same time, the training as a barber must have become an incentive and a way for the social integration. However, the permanent increase of barbers caused diffi culties in integrating themselves in the labour market. That turned into hatred and confrontations with the economical and professional bases, in order to obtain a place in the competitive urban market. A stage where health and illness had become a merchandise, and medicine a good way of earning a living and promoting oneself socially.[ca] Durant el segle XV, la ciutat de València augmentà considerablement la seua població gràcies a una forta immigració. Les oportunitats que oferia la capital del regne eren innombrables i molts practicants de la medicina veieren un mercat que podia satisfer els seus interessos, en un temps on la medicina i els seus practicants eren considerats imprescindibles. Al mateix temps, la formació com a barber degué convertirse en un al·licient i via per a la integració social. Tanmateix, l’augment permanent de barbers va difi cultar la seua integració en el mercat laboral i això es traduí en odis i enfrontaments amb una base econòmica i professional, per tal d’aconseguir guanyar un lloc en el competitiu mercat urbà. Get PDFThe public written projection of the Umayyad sovereigns of al-Andalus is examined throughout two different and complementary testimonies, preserved in Arab chronicles. First, their physical appearance as described in these sources, and secondly, the inscriptions in their seals. Both are compared with similar texts regarding Umayyad and Abbasid rulers in the Eastern parts of the Islamic Medieval realm. Religious and political uses of these images of power are finally offered.Se examina aquí la proyección pública y escrita de los soberanos omeyas de al-Ándalus a través de dos diferentes y complementarios testimonios, preservadoa en las crónicas árabes: en primer lugar, su aspecto físico tal como se describe en esas fuentes y, en segundo, las inscripciones de sus sellos. Ambas cuestiones se comparan con textos similares relativos a los Omeyas y Abbasíes de Oriente. Finalmente, se presentan conclusiones respecto al uso religioso y político de estas imágenes del poder
Le procédé de blanchiment dans les ateliers monétaires français au XV-XVIème siècle: approche archéométrique et expérimentale
Get PDFIn the late nineties, excavations in La Rochelle (France) have discovered the remains of a royal mint of the sixteenth century. This discovery enabled the collection of artefacts directly related to the manufacture of coins. The exceptional corpus gathered is the subject of a study of the chaîne opératoire of coining in the medieval time. Special attention is paid to an operation which takes place before the strike: the blanching of blanks. Well documented in ancient times, the samples from La Rochelle offer the opportunity to study this process during the medieval period and in a royal mint. In addition, thanks to reconstitution experiments, it is possible to define a reaction mechanism that helps to understand our historical observations.[fr] À la fin des années quatre-vingtdix, des fouilles menées à La Rochelle (France) ont permis de mettre au jour les vestiges d’un atelier monétaire royal du XVIe siècle. Cette découverte a permis la collecte de matériel directement liée à la fabrication monétaire. Le corpus exceptionnel rassemblé est l’objet d’une étude qui vise à mettre en évidence la chaîne opératoire de fabrication de monnaie à l’époque considérée. Un intérêt particulier est porté à une technique d’argenture qui intervient avant la frappe des monnaies, le blanchiment des flans. Bien documenté pour les périodes antiques, le matériel de La Rochelle offre la possibilité de mettre en évidence ce procédé pour une période plus récente et dans un cadre officiel. De plus, à partir d’expériences de reconstitution, il a été possible de proposer un mécanisme réactionnel. Les hypothèses proposées permettent alors de dégager des implications historiques dans le procédé de fabrication

Get PDFThis paper sets out to underline the important role of Hispano-Arabic culture in the technological advances related to the different techniques of bookmaking: parchment, paper and binding. As the subject is quite broad we shall only outline a few important questions, as most of the studies in these matters, paradoxical though it may seem, have been carried outside Spain (most of them in France, as we can see by the bibliography quoted). It would therefore be very interesting if the new generations of Spanish scholars became interested in studying this subject in depth, since these advances and their expansion throughout the Mediterranean gave rise to the cultural flowering of the Renaissance.Este artículo pretende poner de manifiesto la importancia que tuvo la cultura hispano-árabe para los avances tecnológicos producidos en las diferentes técnicas implicadas en la elaboración del libro: pergamino, papel y encuadernación. Somos conscientes que, dada la amplitud del tema, sólo vamos a esbozar una serie de cuestiones que consideramos fundamentales ya que la mayoría de los estudios sobre estas materias, aunque parezca paradójico, se han realizado fuera de nuestras fronteras, sobre todo en Francia, como podemos ver por la bibliografía citada. Por lo tanto sería muy interesante que las nuevas generaciones de estudiosos españoles se interesaran en profundizar en estas materias ya que estos avances y su expansión por todo el Mediterráneo dieron lugar a la eclosión cultural del Renacimiento
