Relationship between Swallowing Function, and Functional and Nutritional Status in Hospitalized Elderly Individuals

    No full text
Dysphagia is highly prevalent among hospitalized elderly individuals. However, the underlying mechanism of this condition remains to be elucidated. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between swallowing function, and functional and nutritional status in hospitalized elderly individuals. The subjects consisted of 113 patients with a mean age of 86.4 years. Those who had Parkinson’s disease and a cerebrovascular accident within 6 months, or malignancy were excluded. Swallowing measures included a graded water swallowing test and food intake level scale; functional measures included a physical dependency scale and a comprehension scale; and nutritional measures included serum albumin levels, mid-upper arm circumference, and calf circumference. Both of the swallowing measures had significant correlations with the functional and nutritional measures but not with age, suggesting that dysphagia in this clinical population is related to functional dependency and malnutrition. Given that sarcopenia is exacerbated by disease, inactivity and malnutrition, the result of the present study is possibly explained using the concept of sarcopenia involving the swallowing muscle mass and its function

The Antibacterial Activity of ZrO2 Nanoparticles on Biocide Resistant Bacilli in Paints.

    No full text
The antibacterial activity of four biocides against members of the class Bacilli isolated from paint and paint scrapings was investigated using the disc diffusion technique. Bacillus species were selected for this study amongst other organisms isolated from paint and paint scrapings because they were regularly isolated in highest populations when compared with other isolates detected. The biocides were made up of benzimidazole carbamate/2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin -3-one (OIT)/Urea derivative), (5-Chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CIT/MCIT); (Carbendazim octylisothiazolone and Diuron) and (Chloromethyl and methylisothiazolone). Bacillus cereus and B. coagulans had 0% inhibition of all the biocides tested. Similar experiments with ZrO2 nanoparticles yielded 65% inhibition of Bacillus sphaericus and 80% of Brevibacillus choshinensis. The result of this study indicates the need for more sophisticated antimicrobials and underscores the superior efficacy of nano-structured antimicrobials over conventional biocides used in the paint industry. These findings will enhance efforts geared towards combating biocide-resistant microorganisms in the paint industry

Procalcitonin: A Severity Marker for Pre-Eclampsia?

    No full text
Introduction: Pre-eclampsia is a common and potentially dangerous disorder of human pregnancy. The maternal syndrome of hypertension and proteinuria is part of a severe systemic inflammatory response that includes leukocyte and endothelial cell activation.PCT is a polypeptide consisting of 116 aminoacids and is the precursor of calcitonin. Over the last decade, PCT has become increasingly popular as a novel marker of infection in the intensive care unit setting. The aim of our study was to evaluate changes in serum levels of PCT in pregnancies complicated with mild pre-eclampsia or severe pre-eclampsia and further investigate the correlation with CRP.Methods: Throughout the study period, 80 pregnant women complicated with mild preeclampsia, 80 pregnant women complicated with severe preeclampsia and 80 healthy pregnant women as a control group, giving a total of 240 pregnant women were enrolled into study. Results: Both severe pre-eclampsia and mild pre-eclampsia groups showed significantly higher PCT values when compared with control healthy group (p<0.05). Also, severe pre-eclampsia group showed significantly higher PCT values when compared with mild pre-eclampsia group (p<0.05).A statistically significant correlation was observed in between presence of pre-eclampsia and procalcitonin positivity (p<0.05). And also severity of pre-eclampsia has shown a statistically significant correlation with high values of procalcitonin (p<0.05).Conclusion: Procalcitonin might be a diagnostic marker for investigating women especially with suspected severe preeclampsia

The Effect of Bovine Thrombin, Thrombin Receptor Agonist Peptide-6 and Chitosan on Activating Platelet-Rich Plasma.

In this study, the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) activation by bovine thrombin, thrombin receptor agonist peptide-6 (TRAP), and chitosan to become platelet-rich gel (PRG) was examined. In addition to measuring in vitro clotting times and clot retraction over time, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and transforming growth factor β-1 (TGF-β1) generated by clot formation were also assayed. Rapid polymerization of PRP was observed when activated with bovine thrombin, followed by TRAP and chitosan. Bovine thrombin caused considerable clot retraction at 1, 2, 4 hours, but the clot retraction with different activators was similar at 24 hours. Although levels of TGF-β1 were similar for all activators used, greater concentration of PDGF was detected from PRG after TRAP treatment. It was concluded activating PRP with TRAP or chitosan was a safe alternative to bovine thrombin, resulting in excellent working time, significantly less clot retraction, and more growth factors compared to the currently available activator

Adrenal Hematoma: A Report of Three Cases

    No full text
Adrenal hematomas are uncommon and may due to multiple causes. They may be spontaneous or secondary to trauma, subjacent tumor, underlying to iatrogenic cause or anti phospholipid antibody syndrome. We report the case of three patients seen for acute abdominal pain (n=2) and hemorrhagic shock (n = 1), that the morphological examination showed the presence of an adrenal hematoma. This was secondary to thoracic abdominal trauma in one case. In the other two cases, he revealed a malignant lesion underlying the outset in a patient (malignant non-functional pheochromocytoma) and in the radiological monitoring (adrenocortical carcinoma) in the other case

    Bovine Milk Fat Characteristics

    No full text
Bovine milk fat is important in aspects of nutrition, human health and milk products technology. Milk fat is an basic component of human’s diet, but its chemical composition and secretion is still not fully understood. Many scientific experiments related to fat secretion and lipogenesis were conducted on human, mouse and goat models. Most studies are currently concentrating on milk fatty acids (FA) profiles and milk fat globules (MFGs) structure and functions. The knowledge broadening in this area would allow to modify fat chemical composition into positive nutritional aspect and to find new bioactive compounds

Horizontal and Vertical vHIT in Acute Unilateral Vestibular Neuritis Patients

    No full text
Objectives: Vestibular neuritis (VN) is an acute peripheral vestibulopathy that manifests with acute spontaneous vertigo, nausea and sometimes vomiting, and postural imbalance. Video head impulse test (vHIT) is an objective measure of responses of semicircular canals using high speed video measures of eye movement response to head impulses. The purpose of this study was to measure and analyze horizontal and vertical vestibular canals responses measured by vHIT in acute unilateral VN and to compare the results with the un-affected sides in those patients.Design: The responses of vHIT were obtained from 31 patients with acute VN (16 females and 15 males) ranging in age from 24 to 54 years. Audiological and vestibular assessments were done to all participants that include pure tone, speech audiometry, tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, vestibular bed side evaluation and caloric testing. Results: The mean age of VN patients were 38.03 ± 7.96 years. The right side was affected in 14 and left in 17 patients. The gain of vHIT was reduced in the affected side of VN which was statistically significant when compared with the un-affected side. Isolated horizontal canal was observed in 15 patients whereas mixed horizontal and vertical canals were observed in 9 patients. Vertical canals were affected in 7 out of 31 patients.Discussion and Conclusion: Acute VN patients do have single or multi-semicircular canals affection which can be objectively measured for each canal by vHIT. The lesion is manifested by reduction in amplitude response for affected canal which can affect the superior division mainly and to less extent the inferior vestibular division

Syphilis, HIV and other Infections: A Continuing Challenge

    No full text
Syphilis, HIV and other infections should be considered in patients with dermatology clinic lesions. We report the case of a young female who showed multiple lesions arond genital and perigenital areas. The dark field microscopy and serological study for syphilis and HIV were positive. Four months later she showed ulcerations which evidenced a partial response to penicillin treatment. The histopathology of skin biopsy reported “compatible with donovanosis†so she was treated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Several months later, biopsy and scrapings of new lesions were performed and Histoplasma capsulatum was detected. Itraconazole therapy was initiated and after three years she returned with almost complete remission of the lesions
