The Greek Flutist Eurysthenes Ghisas. From the Athens Conservatory to the Vienna Court Opera

    No full text
Concerning the notable figures in the History of Modern Greek music, musicological research brings to light mainly facts about the life and works of composers who have left an oeuvre for future researchers and audiences. But there is an equally important field of research in the performance of a composition; therefore, due attention should be paid to the performers. This presentation will seek to acquaint the international musicological community with Greek flutist Eurysthenes Ghisas, an award-winning musician of international acclaim. From Athens, Ghisas had a brilliant career in Western Europe during the last decade of the 19th century. He was the principal flutist of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and gave concerts as a soloist all over Europe. He was a unique, and rare artist because of his admirable career and success and the difficult conditions under which he was raised and educated. An orphan, he studied at the Athens Conservatoire as an orphanage inmate without the moral and material support of his parents and family. Moreover, the slowly developing Athenian musical life did not provide adequate stimulus or an artistic and intellectual milieu comparable to that offered by great Western European musical institutions, educational establishments, and musical ensembles with a long tradition.Despite all these difficulties, Ghisas managed to bridge the gap between the Greek and Western European reality and become one of the top flutists in late 19th-century Europe. This piece of research is original for the most part and is mainly based upon the Press of the time and archival material; it showcases significant docume

Parents’ experiences of uncertainty, (shared) decision-making and moral distress during their infants’ previous hospitalization in the NICU

    No full text
Introduction: Having an infant hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a stressful event for parents and involves ethically challenging situations. Conceptually distinct but closely related concepts of uncertainty, (shared) decision-making in an ethical dilemma and so-called ‘parental moral distress’ are topics that warrant further exploration. Methods: This was a prospective qualitative study that used semistructured interviews of seventeen parents (mothers) who had previously had an infant in the NICU. The study was conducted between February 2021 and August 2021. A thematic analysis of the data was performed. Results: The interview data analysis revealed factors affecting the mothers’ perceived uncertainty in the NICU context. The role of the family paediatrician was highlighted. Parental moral schisms were conceptualized as a split of the parent’s inner world and moral integrity due to completely inconclusive medical evidence—a phenomenon known as ‘uncertainty distress’. In addition, a ‘perceived parental moral schism’ was a situation where somewhat inconclusive medical evidence is perceived as completely inconclusive because of the parent’s values, emotions and beliefs. Furthermore, participants might have experienced parental moral distress (‘constraint distress’) because they were prevented from touching (caressing) their infants, providing milk for their infants, or prohibiting actions they deeply believed to be wrong. Neonatologists have shown ‘old-fashioned’ or subtle paternalistic attitudes. Importantly, mothers’ initial preferences for parent-centred decision-making finally changed to preferences for medical-team-centred decision-making. Parents’ deeply held spiritual and/or existential values gave rise to their preferences for greater involvement in the decision-making process. Barriers and facilitators of parental decision making emerged from the data analysis. Furthermore, barriers and facilitators of mothers’ trust in NICU physicians emerged from the analysis. Participants experienced guilt even for reasons beyond their plausible control. Participants in this study needed not only empathetic and informative emotional communication with health care providers but also empathetic communication with them. Ultimately, at the time of the interviews, the participants had mild lingering emotional reactions that were partly positive and partly negative. Conclusions: His study highlights the empirical factors associated with the concepts of parental uncertainty, parental decision making, and parents’ involvement in shared decision making. Furthermore, this study provides a better, two-tiered working definition of the term ‘parental moral schism’, which is critical to the phenomenology of the term. While many findings of the present study are in line with the findings of previous studies, some unique findings were revealed in the data analysis

Oral health awareness among pregnant women in Greece

Aims: To evaluate the level of knowledge and awareness of pregnant women about the importance of oral health, the quality of care and treatment received within and out of pregnancy period. Methods: This is a questionnaire based prospective study of pregnant women during a 12 months period.  We collected data regarding the knowledge of 520 women on oral health care during their pregnancy and the level of their awareness in such health issues. Results: The 74% believed that they had a good oral health.  Most women (80%), preferred to trust their dentist for any potential dental issue.  In total, 237 women didn’t visit a dentist (either planned or emergently) mainly because they perceived their symptoms as not “important” enough (57%).  The analysis regarding the association between aspects of health and education (chi-square test), shows that the higher the educational status of the women, the better the general health status (p0.001), and the oral health (p0.001).  With respect to bleeding, while the association prior to pregnancy is not statistically significant (p=0.257), during pregnancy is significant (p0.001) with incidents of bleeding increased in the tertiary education group. Conclusions: During the last few years of economic crisis emergency services kept on a relatively decent level with easy access for all patients.  Even though 89.5% of the women in our study had public insurance, just 34 % were aware that dental care is provided freely.

The Serbian and Bulgarian Involvement in the Byzantine Civil Wars of the 14th Century. A Brief Overview The three civil wars of the 14th century mark an important point in the history of the later Byzantine empire. A particularly interesting aspect of these conflicts is the involvement of numerous foreign powers, including Byzantium’s two Balkan neighbours, Serbia and Bulgaria, on which this paper has focused. During the first civil war (1321-1328), fought between the ageing emperor Andronikos II and his grandson Andronikos III, the former secured the support of the Serbian ruler Stefan Uroš III Detsanski, while the latter concluded an alliance with the Bulgarian tsar Michael III Šišman. Both powers were able to benefit from their involvement by making small territorial gains at Byzantium’s expense. Further gains were made during the second civil war (1341-47) that broke out after the sudden death of Andronikos III over the guardianship of his nine-year old son and heir John V Palaiologos. Initially the Serbs, now under Stefan IV Dušan, sided with John VI Kantakouzenos, but in 1343 they switch sides to join the regency, headed by John V’s mother Anna of Savoy. By 1345, the Serbian ruler had extended his control over almost all of Macedonia west of Christoupolis (mod. Kavala) with the exception of Thessaloniki and Anaktaropolis. By the same token, in exchange of helping the regency, Ivan Alexander of Bulgaria received vast tracts of Byzantine land in western Thrace, including the city of Philippoupolis. Nevertheless, thanks to the support of his Turkish allies, John Kantakouzenos emerged victorious from this conflict. During the third civil war (1352-1357), the Serbs and the Bulgarians joined sides with John V Palaiologos in his struggle against Matthew Kantakouzenos, son of John VI, but their forces were crushed by the Ottomans at Didymoteichon in 1352. Overall, it is clear that Bulgaria’s and Serbia’s involvement in the Byzantine civil wars, although significant, was by no means decisive for their outcome.

Very Small Embryonic-like Stem Cells (VSELs) - Overview

    No full text
With the development of technology and the increase in quantity and quality of the available tool, regenerative medicine and stem cell technologies have managed to take big steps forward. It has become possible to identify and purify stem cells (SCs) populations, which have the ability to self-renew and differentiate into a variety of cells while intriguingly these cells display functional and molecular heterogeneity and have a developmental hierarchy. The first report of Very small Embryonic like Stem Cells (VSELs) came back in 2006 were described as a population of stem cells with a pluripotent potential in human umbilical cord blood (hUCB) and murine bone marrow (mBM). In this review, we collected and highlighted some of the most recent research on this cell population
