A Longitudinal Study of the Subdomains of Foreign Language Enjoyment: A Factor of Curves Latent Growth Modeling
The present research employed a dynamic approach to language learning and traced the co-development of English language learners’ private and social foreign language enjoyment(FLE). To this aim, a factor of curves model (FCM) was used, as an innovative statisticalprocedure, to trace the covariance of the subdomains of FLE longitudinally on fourmeasurement occasions and to explore the covariance of the initial state and slope of the sub-domains of FLE and how variation in private and social FLE can be explained by theunderlying global factor of FLE. For data collection, the FLE scale developed by Dewaele andMacIntyre (2014) was distributed to 437 adult EFL learners in four phases. The data wereanalyzed in Mplus in three steps suggested by Wickrama et al (2016). The results indicatedthat all growth parameters across the two primary growth curves (intercepts and slopes ofprivate FLE and social FLE) were statistically significant. This confirmed the existence ofsufficient inter-individual variation and intra-individual trend within each subdomain of FLEand a significant increase over time in these subdomains. Also, the primary growth factors ofprivate FLE and social FLE differentially contributed to second-order growth factors of FLE.Finally, the variances of the intercept and slope of each second subdomain were revealed tobe largely explained by the global factor of FLE. These findings were discussed in the light ofthe potential variables associated with FLE.Keywords: foreign language enjoyment, private FLE, social FLE, factor of curves model, parallel process modelin
Problem Formation and Problem Resolution in American Schools
Educational systems are known to be difficult to transform. We need to better understand the reasons for this difficulty. This article focuses on public education in the United States, and it discusses the successes and failures of urban school reform efforts in terms of Watzlawick et al.’s (1974) theory of problem formation and problem resolution, including thedistinction between first and second order change. The compatibility of this framework with contemporary ideas about the dynamics of change, such as self-organized criticality and emergence is also discussed, and it is shown how these ideas enhance our understanding ofwhat constitutes educational change, and its facilitating and inhibitory processes. The article focuses on two types of school reform: structural reform and financial reform and presentsreform efforts in San Diego and Newark as cases in point. Keywords: public education, second order change, self-organized criticality, emergence, school refor

We examine Modern Greek suffixes -iatiko(s) and -istiko(s) which are indexes of implied meaning related to the cultural and social context of the speakers: The suffixes -iatiko(s) and -istiko(s) are applied to a base that belongs to the category of nouns. Based on the Relational Rule of Word Construction, the above suffixes construct adjectives. Adjectives constructed with -iatiko(s) attribute to the specified noun (kavgas ‘quarrel’) experiential temporal properties of the base noun (vrady ‘evening’), e.g. βραδιάτικος καβγάς ‘evening quarrel/night fight’. Adjectives constructed with -istiko(s) attribute to the specified noun (παιχνίδι ‘toy/game’) socially stereotypical properties of the base noun (αγόρι ‘boy’), e.g. αγορίστικο παιχνίδι ‘boy's toy/game’. Temporal adverbs derived from adjectives with -iatiko(s), e.g. καλοκαιριάτικα ‘in summer’, are used when the speaker’s beliefs or expectations regarding the cultural knowledge for the specific time period, are contradicted. Manner adverbs e.g. δασκαλίστικα ‘in teacher manner’ which are derived from adjectives with -istiko(s), e.g. δασκαλίστικος ‘teacherly’, inherit from the stereotypical meaning concerning social behavior. Adjectives derived from the same noun-base and different suffixes are not absolute synonyms, e.g. βραδ-ινός ‘of evening’ – βραδ-ιάτικος ‘of evening’ and the semantic and pragmatic differences between them are very difficult to understand by non-native speakers. The two suffixes -iatiko(s) and -istiko(s) belong to the [-learned] zone and are applied to nouns of the same zone, e.g. μεσημεριάτικος ‘of midday’ - *μεσημβριάτικος ‘of midday’, παπαδίστικος ‘of priest’ - *ιερίστικος ‘of priest’. The feature [±learned] is also associated with the textual genre in which the adjectives constructed with the above suffixes appear as well as the corresponding adverbs. Consequently, derived adjectives and adverbs with these suffixes are neither present on academic speech nor on scientific terminology
Naturalizing Symbols?
The paper’s main goal is to draw attention to a reductionist strategy prompted by Jerry Fodor’s work on the problem of human intentionality, and to suggest that said strategy could profitably be adopted to provide a naturalistic explanation of Peircean symbols. In the course of doing so, we consider two interesting semiotic approaches to this phenomenon due to René Thom and to Marcello Barbieri respectively, and we try to show that they both fall short of meeting two basic epistemological desiderata. In order to exemplify the kind of alternative strategy that we have in mind, we then sketch a toy model of our ability to use words and sentences, and we argue that, in spite of its manifest current limits, it could represent a useful starting point for the much broader challenge of naturalizing symbols

Signaling the unreal in language evolution: locating irrealis syntactic projection in phylogenetic time
This paper discusses the signification of the unreal in human language from an evolutionary perspective with the aid of recent research on language evolution across distinct but interrelated fields. The term ‘unreal’ is used here to refer to situations or entities that are not—yet—true or existing and in linguistic terms it relates to the notion of nonveridicality (Giannakidou 1998, Giannakidou Mari 2021), which is an analysis of the pretheoretical notion of the irrealis. From a biological perspective the role of the lateral prefrontal cortex is here highlighted regarding the signification of the unreal. In particular the function of prefrontal synthesis (PFS), defined in Vyshedskiy (2019) as the ‘conscious, purposeful process of synthesizing novel mental images from two or more objects stored in memory’
SOCIAL MEDIA-BASED SOCIAL CAPITAL ON PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING: EXPLORING THE MEDIATIONAL ROLE OF SELF-ESTEEM
The trend of intensive social media utilization signifies the importance of technologies in individual lives to interact with recent and original connections. Concurrently, social media facilitate communication and reflection on personal and social issues to elevate self-esteem and psychological well-being. The present study aimed to empirically appraise three types of social media-based social capital on self-esteem and psychological well-being. A web-based cross-sectional survey was implemented to collect data from 240 Jordanian respondents. Subsequently, partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) and artificial neural network (ANN) analysis were performed on the collected data. The findings demonstrated that the bonding, bridging, and maintaining social capital significantly increased self-esteem levels before significantly harnessing psychological well-being. Furthermore, self-esteem significantly mediated the association between social capital (bonding and bridging) and psychological well-being. Similarly, the ANN analysis revealed that self-esteem with social capital bonding and maintaining were the three significant psychological well-being predictors. Resultantly, the study outcomes shed light on the importance of social media-based social capital in nurturing self-esteem and psychological well-being, in which the mediational role of self-esteem is vital to establishing psychological well-being. As personal social media requirements vary amongst individuals, social media activities could also engender negative psychological well-being, which necessitates the achievement of optimal self-esteem degrees from social media usage to attain an appropriate psychological well-being level
