Investigating clitics in adult L2 Greek
We investigated the role of uninterpretable features (Chomsky 1995) in L2 Greek clitics. Oral production data were obtained from 65 adults who were divided into three L1 groups, Albanian, English and Georgian. The L1s under investigation differ from each other and Greek both in terms of grammaticalising clitics and morphologically marking agreement with the clitic referent. Results indicate L1 as well as developmental effects in the production of 3rd person accusative object clitics, yet not in the production of either 1st-2nd accusative object clitics or genitive possessive clitics. Despite the high performance of all groups at clitic agreement, problems with gender agreement persist. L2 learners seem to be aided by interpretable features to which access is still granted via UG. These findings seem to lend support to the IH
Some things you just cannot share: On Schneider’s Law, geminates and syllables
Various dialects of Inuktitut present consonant reduction in sequences of consonant clusters due to an alleged ban on syllable-adjacent geminates. This ban has been known as Schneider’s Law (henceforth SL). The present paper re-approaches its definition, focusing on the markedness of geminates and their co-existence in a single syllable. We claim that the underlying cause of SL lies in the fact that two geminates under a single syllable node render the syllable ‘super-marked’ thus calling for simplification of one of the two geminates. We also propose that SL is a more widespread phenomenon applying to other languages too including Japanese, Dogrib and Trukese
Απόψεις φοιτητών/τριών ως μέσο αξιολόγησης του Προγράμματος Σπουδών της τουρκικής γλώσσας: Η περίπτωση του Τμήματος Μεσογειακών Σπουδών του Πανεπιστημίου Αιγαίου
Foreign language education in the Greek Tertiary Education is described as a long-lasting successful promotion of the values of the contemporary multilingual and multicultural reality. The integration of Turkish in the curriculum of specific university departments not only echoes European policies, approaching language instruction in a multilingual way but also recognizes the multilayered contact of Greece and Turkey. Celebrating this year its 20 years of contribution in the academic community, the Department of the Mediterranean Studies of the University of the Aegean is one of the first university departments that have included the instruction of Turkish in their curriculum. Nevertheless, there has been no systematic investigation of the way university students view the syllabus of the Turkish language and how they evaluate it. Within this frame, the specific paper looks into the viewpoints of the university students of the Faculty of the Mediterranean Studies, who have chosen Turkish as an obligatory language, at its crux. Their opinions, gathered with the aid of a questionnaire, have been treated as an evaluation tool of the teaching practices and methods followed during the instruction of Turkish and the way this instruction contributes to the promotion of students’ linguistic abilities. The statistical analysis of the data has led to useful conclusions
Greek cultural identity and Standard English pronunciation:Greek EFL teachers’ perceptions and practices
The present study, set in the Greek EFL context, investigates the interrelation among cultural identity (CI), perceptions towards accented English (standard[1] native or not) and pronunciation teaching practices of Greek EFL teachers. Findings indicate that despite some tolerance that Greek EFL teachers show towards NNE accents[2], they overall dissociate their CI from standard native English (St/NE) accent and from their norm-bound teaching practices.[1]By ‘standard’ we mean: “the language [accent] of educated native speakers, without explicit indication of what it means to be ‘educated’” (Seidlhofer 2011: 71). It is the accent that enjoys prestige, is not related to provinciality and/or lower social status and is encouraged in the classroom (Wells 1982: 34-35). In this study, although different from ‘native’, ‘standard’ is used to refer to accents mainly spoken in the UK and US, lacking localizable sound features (Wells 1982).[2] By ‘accent’, we mean “a pattern of pronunciation used by a Native speaker of English] or […] by the community or social grouping to which [s/he] belongs.” (Wells 1982: 1).
Teaching and learning English online: A research on Greek online teachers and learners of EFL
The paper investigates Greek teachers’ and students’ views towards teaching and learning English through synchronous online courses. Data were collected via separate questionnaires completed by 93 online learners and 56 online teachers. The results indicated that the working environment, easy access, and convenient attendance affect students’ and instructors’ choice of online courses. Participants suggest specialised training courses for online teachers and increase of advertising to improve the quality of online EFL instruction. Finally, technical issues and long screen hours are the biggest difficulties that online students and teachers face respectively. Students’ greatest insecurity is course quality, while teachers fear exposure
Investigating the French article system in FFL written production: A learner corpus study
The present study investigates the use of definite, indefinite and partitive articles of the French language by L1 Greek-speaking learners. It is based on a learner corpus composed of written compositions. The aim of the study is to explore: (i) the errors produced by the French Foreign Language (FFL) learners in activities of written production due to the inaccurate use of articles and (ii) whether there are differences regarding the type and frequency of errors generated by basic, independent and proficient users (Council of Europe 2001, 2018)
Vowel height as sonority level
This paper explores two processes that target vowels in non-prominent positions: vowel reduction and vowel deletion. Our aim is to show that, despite being analyzed separately in the relevant literature, the two processes not only share certain important properties but, in fact, can be seen as distinct epiphenomena of a single underlying mechanism that aims at decreasing the sonority level of vowels in non-prominent syllables. The analysis, which focuses on vowel reduction and vowel deletion in Northern Greek dialects as a case study, is couched within the framework of Gradient Harmonic Grammar (Smolensky Goldrick 2016)
