Dynamical Systems Measures of Small Group Functioning
Small collaborative group learning is part of many classrooms, but the objective evaluation of group functioning is not well established. Two dynamical systems measures, burstinessand power law fits of data distributions, have been used in other psychological contexts to explore system health and overall functioning from a complex systems perspective. Thosemeasures are used in this study to explore self-organization in collaborative learning groups. Data were collected from three groups of fifth-graders undertaking an open-endedengineering design challenge. The groups were recorded, the audio transcribed, and talk turns coded for macrocognitive contributions. The burstiness and distribution of macrocognitivecodes were investigated to determine how burstiness and distribution might be used as measures of group functioning. Burstiness values indicate self-organization of groups via macrocognitive codes. Power law analyses show a general decrease in the shape parameter and increase in group goodness-of-fit values over time. These results indicate increasingorganization and flexibility in small groups. Because there is little prior theory regarding applying these measures to classroom situations, the findings indicate potential fruitful areas for theorizing about group-level functioning.Keywords: small groups, dynamic systems, macrocognition, collaborative learning,power laws, burstiness, complex system
Capturing Debate Dynamics: Complexity Theory and Emergent Learning in Legal Education
The present article’s aim is to show that complexity theory provides us with an indispensabletheoretical framework to articulate valuable teaching practices and explain how we can bringstudent cohorts to interact with each other and understand deep problems. The article will,firstly, highlight the epistemological assumption of modern legal education, i.e., therecitation model. I will then provide a brief outline of the theoretical and methodologicalunderpinnings of complexity theory and present an approach in which complexity theory canbe employed to inform valuable methods in legal education. Secondly, I will argue thatcomplexity theory captures important aspects of what is experientially familiar but notexplicitly known to teachers: knowledge and understanding are emergent properties. Thisinsight will allow us to treat classrooms as informational networks, i.e., as complex adaptivesystems. Finally, I will provide two practical examples for bottom-up teaching. I will showhow year after year small cohorts of students through interaction and discussion on thetopics of punishment-behaviour and legal discretion respectively, manage to reconstructtheoretically sophisticated academic discussions to their full extent.Keywords: complexity, complex adaptive systems, emergent learning, recitation model,instructional conversations, legal discretion, punishment theories, educational attractor
Complex Systems and Education: From Theory to Research to Practice. Proceedings of the Satellite of the Conference on Complex Systems 2021
Over the past two decades, there has been a gradual but significant increase in the research and theoretical development concerning education as a complex process. This complexity entails the hierarchical relationship between systems and their constituentcomponents, such as for example students within classrooms within school buildings; complex transformations such as hysteresis and second order change in the qualitative transitions in the child’s intellectual development, and emergent learning processes, fractal patterns, self-transcending constructions and uncomputability. The inherent complexityof the educational process has been long recognized, but the development of a research tradition that specifically utilizes methodologies that are grounded in complexity theory has been slow to materialize
Διεθνής Πολιτική και Trolling: Πρόκληση για τη Διεθνή Θεωρία;
The essay examines the phenomenon of trolling in the context of politics and especially of international politics. Emphasis is given to how trolling functions within International Relations, particularly in respect to a conventional image of the field/discipline. Does it work in an affirmative or in a subversive manner? The usual analysis of trolls in instrumental terms, like ‘‘weapon’’, reinforces the impression that the aforementioned field and the respective theory, in their state-centric manifestation, hold up well. Trolls are used by states, often to strengthen the competitive spirit or regime survival. However, trolls may also be directed against states/regimes or the status quo and mainstream attitudes, at national and supranational levels. At its most extreme, the very understanding of trolling is possible to escape from the classics, namely a kind of aggressive behavior in social media. It further concerns a critical attitude towards certainties and knowledge claims. In short, trolling potentially poses challenges for the characteristics and evolution of politics as well as for the relationship between power and knowledge
Σημειωτική προσέγγιση στην εικαστική απόδοση της παράστασης της Κρίσης των ψυχών σε λαούς και θρησκείες
The fate of the soul after death has always attracted man's interest. Perceptions of the Hereafter are a driving force for Life, because as Plato said: "Philosophy is the study of death" (Phaedon 63.b4-69.e2). The ancient Greeks were so concerned about the afterlife, that they created an accurate picture of death and the path that souls follow, as well as a system of reward and punishment for deeds of mortals while they lived. After souls are tried in the great court of judgment, the judges decide where the moral, virtuous and blessed souls will be placed and where the wicked and immoral will end up, according to the deeds of men when alive. The eschatological theme of the Judgment of souls enriched with elements from myths and traditions of peoples and religions has a rich visual performance. Semiologically it offers a wealth of information with references both to life and deeds of men on earth and in Hereafter

In this article, I propose an alternative exploration of "truth", utilizing semiotics as a tool. My basic assumption is that the type of alienated human in its current state represents our "reality" at a deeper level, in relation to the false dichotomies of "inside-outside", "limitation-freedom", "alone-together", "illness-health" which reveal almost nothing. As false as the substance of reality or the distinction between substance and appearance is, equally false are the above dilemmas. Specifically, and based on a moderated relativism of phenomenological ontology (Sartre 2008), I argue that the "wandering" human as an ontological category existed before the outbreak of the pandemic and will continue to exist forever.
Complexity and Professionalization: The Nested Collaborative Nature of Teacher Learning
As perspectives on the role of teachers shift from technician to professional, models of teacher learning must adapt to honour this professionalization. The theory of complexity science enables a deeper understanding of ways to support and possibly promote teacher learning. We propose the Nested Collaborative Learning Model (NCLM) that builds from the Interconnected Model of Professional Growth while incorporating key elements of complexity science. Using narrative inquiry, this research exemplifies the NCLM through the learning journeys of two teachers. The NCLM represents learning as emerging from the nested, self-organizing, adaptive processes existing within the reality of a teacher's professional experiences
Cancer in Performance: An Affective Encounter
This essay delves into the portrayal of the “unpresentable” in contemporary performances centered around cancer, probing how such artistic endeavors defy conventional aesthetic paradigms. I anchor my analysis on the mixed-media dance piece Still/Here (Iowa 1994) by the renowned American experimental choreographer Bill T. Jones. My perspective is enriched by Jean F. Lyotard’s interpretation of the Kantian sublime in postmodern art, contemporary performance theories, art criticism, and personal reflections from cancer-related performances I have experienced. I compare two performances for illustrative purposes: the British musical theater performance A Pacifist’s Guide to the War on Cancer (B. Kimmings, B. Lobel, T. Parkinson, 2016) and the Greek documentary-theater performance In Spite of Everything (Georgia Mavragani and the Hellenic Cancer Society, 2018). Both draw inspiration from genuine cancer narratives and incorporate a blend of professional and amateur artists. Ultimately, my investigation seeks to trace the progression of the representation of cancer in performance
