The Politics of Plot Twists: Cognition, Culture, and the Convention of Mental Illness

    No full text
Plot twists have long become a mainstream mainstay, losing much of their ability to truly surprise audiences. A prevalent tendency in plot-twist films is to pit diegetic reality against protagonists’ subjective perspective as affected by a mental illness, connecting neurodiversity with (narrative) unreliability. This essay offers three alternative readings of this conventionalized type of twist films with a neuro-non-normative protagonist: as mediations of the fictional unconscious, as mediations of viewers’ unconscious, and as remediations of the role of mental illness. Drawing on cognitive film theory, the essay illustrates these readings using Joe Wright’s The Woman in the Window (2018), whose surprising twist is that the protagonist does not have a mental illness. Subverting the convention of the unreliable, neuro-non-normative narrator, the essay argues that the film invites viewers to reflect on and question their own involvement in the (re)construction of narrative unreliability

Chaotic Selection Dynamics: A Non-Random Driver of Evolutionary Variation

    No full text
Chaotic dynamics, a phenomenon characterized by deterministic yet unpredictable behavior, is prevalent across biological systems. This paper challenges the classical view of evolution, which posits that genetic variation arises purely through random processes such as mutations and recombination. Instead, it argues that chaotic selection dynamics play a crucial role in generating and structuring evolutionary variation. By embedding populations within dynamic and chaotic environments, chaotic systems produce structured, non-random variation that influences adaptability and diversity. The interplay between chaotic dynamics and natural selection results in fluctuating adaptive landscapes, feedback loops, and enhanced phenotypic plasticity. Case studies in predator-prey dynamics and gene regulatory networks highlight the role of chaos in shaping evolutionary outcomes. This framework provides a novel perspective on evolution, emphasizing the deterministic structuring of variation in otherwise unpredictable environments. Recognizing the role of chaos in evolution not only deepens our understanding of biological diversity but also calls for a reevaluation of classical evolutionary models to incorporate these dynamics

    No full text

The Impact of US Black Freedom Social Movements on School Psychological Practices: A Scoping Review

    No full text
Historical context often informs educational policy conversations and professional practice in the schools. This paper explores how a significant and long-ranging social movement that has shaped US culture over the past several decades, the collective of Black Freedom Movements (BFMs), may have impacted school psychology academic discourse. Using peer-reviewed publications as a gauge of BFMs’ impact on the provision of psychological services, the focus of this scoping review was to systematically investigate the state of research on this topic from the beginning of the thoroughbred years, the years that school psychology as a professional identity becomes independent (i.e., the 1970s), to the end of a year of great significance to American society in terms of racial reckoning (i.e., 2020). The authors identified 15 publications, across eight major school psychological journals, synthesized key quantitative and qualitative aspects of the available literature, and reported key themes. Findings indicate that in the school psychology field, there have been calls for action, change, and promotion of social justice agents across time that consistently highlight the perceived capacity that school psychologists can play in advocating for the rights of the Black American community. This process of social movement to academic change has implications for other Western societies, including European countries such as Greece, as such societies struggle with their own marginalized groups demanding social change, such as the Roma community. Applications for practice are offered. Historical context often informs educational policy conversations and professional practice in the schools. ΑΙ act: The future of regulation and human rights. Will it set a global standard for ethical AI or introduce new challenges for fundamental freedoms

    No full text
The EU AI Act (Regulation 2024/1689) establishes a comprehensive legal framework for artificial intelligence, balancing technological progress with fundamental rights protection. It introduces strict oversight for high-risk AI systems through Article 27, requiring Fundamental Rights Impact Assessments (FRIA) to prevent biases, discrimination, and privacy violations. Meanwhile, Article 5 restricts real-time biometric identification in public spaces, with only limited exceptions for law enforcement under strict safeguards. By embedding transparency, accountability, and ethical considerations into AI governance, the Act sets a global precedent for responsible AI regulation. Its success, however, will depend on effective enforcement and adaptability to evolving AI challenges.

An In-Depth Examination of GDPR and eIDAS in the Prevention of Identity Theft

    No full text
In this article, a specific issue is addressed that concerns the protection of privacy vis-à-vis the efforts to combat identity theft and protect personal identifying information. Personal information, in the form of data, is largely available within the online ecosystem, thereby introducing a profusion of opportunities in the interest of cybercriminals who seek to collect vitally valuable data in order to commit fraud against individuals. Therefore, an effective and rigid data protection should also include the protection of identity. The solutions undertaken to protect identity-related data are more seen as measures enhancing privacy, which are incorporated within the European legislative corpus. The most prominent legislative text is the General Data Protection Regulation, as the core principles embodied coupled with the rights afforded to the data subject and in conjunction with the security safeguards that underpin the entirety of data processing are well-suited to deliver a robust and inclusive digital ecosystem for the identity security. In alignment with that effort, the eIDAS ecosystem defines a regulatory framework to ensure secure and seamless electronic transactions between businesses, citizens, and public authorities. In particular, it creates a cross-border legal framework that ensures the interoperability of electronic identification systems in all EU member states. Nevertheless, particular attention must be directed also toward the challenges besetting the even regulatory implementation, stemming primarily from technological advancements, inherent regulatory limitations and deficient societal engagement.
