    “Closer to the Serbian”? Ukrainian Song and the Mental Mappings of Music in the Russian Empire

    In the late nineteenth-century Russian Empire, Ukrainian folk song was enlisted by both Ukrainian and Russian nation-building projects. This paper discusses various views on Ukrainian song in the Empire’s musical discourse, which, given the emphasis on folk song as a vehicle for national identity, depended greatly on their authors’ concept of nationality. Moreover, as Russian critics and composers were propagating the principle of “strict diatonicism” as a fundamental principle for Russian music, the fact that Ukrainian song was found to be more “chromatic” affected how historical actors judged its authenticity, distinctiveness, centrality, and significance. The concepts and practices of folklorists and composers can, therefore, help us understand the mental mappings of music and nationality within the Russian Empire

    PERCEIVED DIDACTIC PRACTICE, STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT GOALS AND COGNITIVE OUTCOMES IN THE TRANSITION TO SECONDARY SCHOOL

    The aim of this study was to investigate students' perceptions of language teaching practices in relation to their achievement goal orientations and cognitive outcomes.  Participants were 543 seventh graders attending Modern Greek Language. The study utilized self-report scales to measure students’ achievement goal orientations, students’ perceptions about the goals adopted by teachers, students' perceptions of didactic practices that their teachers used during the lesson, students’ interest about the lesson, perceived difficulty of the lesson and achievement in writing. Latent Profile Analysis revealed three latent profiles: 'High Goals', 'Mastery Goals', and 'Medium Goals'. These profiles were predicted by teachers' perceived goals, and by student-centered didactic practice which was discriminated into critical thinking, and deep understanding. The first profile was only positively associated with students’ perceptions that their teachers adopt performance goals, the second profile with students’ perceptions that their teachers adopt mastery goals, critical thinking, and deep understanding, but negatively associated with students’ perceptions that their teachers promote performance goals. The third profile had a negative association with students’ perceptions that their teachers adopt mastery goals and student-centered didactic practice. These findings are discussed in the context of current theory, which emphasizes the constructive role of mastery goals and instructional practices that focus on critical thinking and deep understanding

    Through the corpus of Chinese artist LuYang, this article aims to prove how artistic practices involving transmediatic crossovers affect both the conditions of creation, circulation and reception of a work. Using tools of media archaeology, it compares two of the artist’s recent exhibitions and puts this corpus in perspective with previous historical examples, locating his work in the path of cinema as a “post-cinematographic.” It also examines how Postmodernism is impacting contemporary artistic practices in New Media, in production, content and form, disseminating its terms in both the work and the discourse of artists. Finally, this article also delves deeper into LuYang’s artistic practice and introspection and considers how (binary) digital devices are paradoxically used as media for individuals to express and affirm their sexual or gender identity beyond binary oppositions

    Vast Machineries and Black Oceans: Midst and (Infra)Structured Unreliability

    Midst is a semi-improvised sci-fantasy podcast, which is promoted for its unreliable mediation via three anonymous voices. The three narrators weave their story of a frontier planet caught between two contrasting sides of a fictional cosmos by continuously omitting descriptions, changing details, contradicting their statements, and questioning each other’s authority. The uttered word is presented as flexible and bound to shift, bend, and be entirely negated, along with everything that can be assumed about Midst’s fictional world. This paper will inquire how such a podcast can nonetheless produce a cohesive narrative by identifying and exploring infrastructural formations that permeate the auditive experience. It will suggest that its various forms of infrastructures are essential means of meaning-making, that work with and through Midst’s innate heterogeneity and paradoxes

    EMOTIONS IN NEGOTIATION: A BOON OR A BANE?

    Negotiation is omnipresent in people’s lives, whether the context be arguing with a spouse, making a business deal, or buying a new car. This study aimed to investigate the role of emotions in both economic and social-psychological outcomes of negotiation. Thirty-eight undergraduate psychology students formed dyads and were randomly assigned to either the experimental or the control group. In the experimental condition, positive emotions were induced through loving-kindness meditation (LKM) to both parties in each dyad, while in the control condition participants were not exposed to any emotional manipulation. Then, all participants were engaged in a cell phone negotiation simulation. The results showed that LKM led to increased levels of positive emotions and decreased levels of negative emotions. Nevertheless, the levels of experimental group’s negative emotions increased after the negotiation. In addition, the present study provided evidence that positive emotions are linked to increased cooperation potential and reduced possibilities for impasse, whilst it was found that the higher the levels of positive emotions, the less time is needed for negotiators to make a deal. Furthermore, it was found that negative emotions are associated with worse economic outcomes, while positive emotions experienced after the negotiation relate to participants’ perceptions about their self, the economic outcomes, and the overall satisfaction derived from the negotiation. Finally, it was found that distinct positive and negative emotions serve different functions. Practical implications for designing and implementing interventions focusing on cultivating positive negotiation skills in several contexts, such as workplace, close relationships, and parenting, are discussed
