Aspects of teachers’ self-image as predictors of their self-efficacy
The aim of this paper is to uncover the effect that certain aspects of teachers’ self-image have on Greek language teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs and to identify additional predictors of their self-efficacy as well. To this end, we have examined the effect that aspects of teachers’ self-image such as their perceptions about their language proficiency, recognition of their work, and their role have on the three dimensions of their self-efficacy beliefs: classroom management, student engagement, and instructional strategies, after accounting for other factors that may have an impact on their self-efficacy. Our findings are the product of an online survey conducted among 951 English language teachers of Greek primary and secondary state schools and confirm that the aspects of teachers’ self-image mentioned above and some other factors (e.g. years of teaching experience, cooperation with students, etc.) unveiled in our research are good predictors of teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs
Η ΒΙΩΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΠΕΝΘΟΥΣ ΚΑΙ ΤΑ ΣΤΑΔΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΣΕ ΟΡΘΟΔΟΞΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΙΑΝΟΥΣ = THE EXPERIENCE OF MOURNING AND ITS STAGES IN ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS
This study examined the perceptions and attitudes of Orthodox Christians towards death. The data was collected through face-to-face interviews with Greek Orthodox Christians, using a semi-structured questionnaire. The responses were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The sample included both religious and non-religious Orthodox Christians. It consisted of 50 bereaved individuals (25 religious / 25 non-religious), men and women, aged 18-72, with a time distance from the death event ranging from 2 to 10 years. The results highlighted the psychological, social, and religious components of the responses, emphasizing the strong calming effect of the Greek Orthodox Christian faith in coping with the grief of death. In response to questions regarding the manifestation of psychopathological symptoms, religious Greek Orthodox Christians reported increased resilience and adaptation to loss without displaying such symptoms, while the majority did not seek help from a mental health professional. In contrast, the group of non-religious Greek Orthodox Christians reported reduced resilience as well as manifestation of depressive disorders, social withdrawal, and prolonged or unresolved grief, which led them to seek psychotherapeutic or psychiatric assistance. The experiences reported by religious Greek Orthodox Christians significantly diverge from the predictions of Kübler-Ross's stages of grief theory, whereas those of non-religious individuals align with it
EXAMINING PROTEST PARADIGM AS A BLOCKING MECHANISM AGAINST MINORITY INFLUENCE: A SOCIO-PSYCHOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
This research examined the effects of protest paradigm framing (i.e., the negative, stereotypical coverage of protests by the media) on audience identification with a protest event, the group, and the social movement represented by the protest. Participants (N = 280) were randomly allocated in two experimental conditions, reading a balanced and a negatively framed article on the same protest event (anti-speciesism group protest). Results revealed statistically significant intergroup differences in perceived image of protest group characteristics and identification with protest and social movement of anti-speciesism, controlled for individual political ideology. A hypothesized multiple serial mediation model was examined, and the results indicated that protest coverage framing is indirectly related to identification with the protest event through minority’s both perceived negotiation flexibility and consistency of beliefs, which affect the audience’s evaluation of the minority/protest group’s radical character and image as a threat to social stability. The ways the representations of minority groups through media as rigid, violent and radical act as a mechanism of blocking minority influence are further discussed
“The Madonna of the Future,” or the painter of words
This paper discusses the relation between writing and painting in Henry James’s short story “The Madonna of the Future.” James approaches the subject of the “sister arts” through an intricate narrative frame that challenges narrative authority as a mediator when it comes to artistic evaluation, only to end up celebrating the power of the word at the denouement. To the question whether a described work of art can be said to exist or whether it remains in the sphere of conception, this study opposes the following question: could a twice inexistent work of art (that is not only fictional but also never produced within the fictional frame) take existence through words? This paper discusses the relation between writing and painting in Henry James’s short story “The Madonna of the Future.” James approaches the subject of the “sister arts” through an intricate narrative frame that challenges narrative authority as a mediator when it comes to artistic evaluation, only to end up celebrating the power of the word at the denouement.
Ορισμένα από τα ερωτήματα που θα τεθούν παρακάτω είναι τα εξής: Πώς προσλαμβάνουν οι ποιήτριες το βιβλικό πρόσωπο του Κάιν; Πώς λειτουργεί το βιβλικό υπο-κείμενο στα δύο υπερ-κείμενα;The Bible has provided literature with numerous literary themes and motifs from early on. In the present study, these biblical themes arise from the well-known Old Testament narrative of Abel’s murder by his brother Cain. Zoe Karelli and Melissanthi, poets who share a variety of eclectic affinities, are inspired by the same passage and compose two poems that form a unique poetic dialogue. Some of the questions that will be addressed are: How do the poets perceive the biblical persona of Cain? How does the biblical hypotext function in the two hypertexts
On f. 222v of the MS. Lesvos, Leimonos Monastery 9, dated to the year 1497, an untitled epigram is preserved. The content of the poem leaves no doubt that it was intended to adorn the tomb of Michael Choniates, Metropolitan of Athens (1182-1204). However, various elements of the text allow for reasonable speculation about its author, who may well have been Michael Choniates himself. Along with the edition, translation, and commentary of the epigram, an attempt is made to identify its author and to determine the exact date of Michael Choniates’ death
This paper studies the L2-Turkish acquisition process of Turkish Nominal Syntagmatic Sets Ad tamlaması (NSS-AT) by L1-Greek speaking adults. NSS-AT generally refer to three forms, namely a) N-(n)In N-(s)I(n), b) N N-(s)I(n) and c) N N-(y), which have been traditionally taught in a holistic way in many L2 Turkish grammar (Dafnopatidis Sanlioglu, 2011· Hengirmen, 2007· Lewis, 1967, among others) or coursebooks (Τürkçe Öğreniyorum 1, Yeni İstanbul A1, Yeni Hitit 1, among othres). The study will show that the apparently formal similarity of these forms cannot be correlated with a respective degree of ease in the SLA process. The results will also show that analytic and non-synthetic NSS forms are a step ahead in the SLA process compared to more synthetic ones. Moreover, the learning sequence of the NSS forms will appear to be the same irrespective of the participants’ L2-proficiency level. From a didactic scope, we come to contradict the interconnected teaching of the 3 NSS-AT forms. Instead, we put forward the disconnected teaching of these forms in relation to their underlying semantic, syntactic and functional properties following other grammarians (Göksel Kerslake, 2005· Kornfilt, 1997· van Schaaik, 1996, among others)
Speechreading in Greek adults with normal hearing and hearing impairment
Speechreading is a major source of speech-related information. This study aims to introduce a novel speechreading assessment tool designed for Greek individuals with normal hearing (NH) and hearing impairment (HI). Ten young adults with NH and three young adults with HI participated in the study. Overall, the results suggest better performance in speechreading ability by individuals with HI than NH. In both groups there was variability on speechreading performance in both word and sentence tasks. Better performance in vowel vs. consonant speechreading ability was found for individuals with NH but not HI. The latter showed similar speechreading performance for both vowels and consonants
Degraded kind-denoting bare plurals
This paper continues the program of attributing to general principles the behavior of kind-denoting nominals with respect to number and definiteness (Dayal, 2004). I argue that the degradation of Shockley invented ?transistors is due to Transitivity (Hopper Thompson, 1980), which is an improvement upon previous appeals to topicality (Krifka et al., 1995) and null determiners (Oosterhoff, 2008). I further argue that the degradation of My favorite animal is ?dogs is due to the pre-copular nominal being definite and lacking plurality. With that, I advance the determination of the principles which underly the behavior of kind-denoting nominals
Ethnomathematics and cognitive anthropology: Mensuration and cognitive shifts in Mycenaean and alphabetic Greek
This paper, starting with the cognitive origin of surface measurement systems in Ancient Greece and the historical change they underwent, aims to address numerical cognition, its universal foundations and the influence of cultural variation upon it. Mensuration systems emerge from universal cognitive sources, human body, nature, context sensitive modifications, units based on agriculture and human labour, and are transferrable. The diversity of land measurements is due to the non-atomic nature of landscapes, so human cognition individuates them differently. The evidence presented here confirms Piaget’s constructivist theory of meaning: numerical meaning is constructed through observation of nature and social discourse
