Light, salinity, and nitrogen modulation of growth and carotenoid synthesis in six Dunaliella strains
Dunaliella species are a unique group of microalgae known for their remarkable ability to thrive in extremely saline environments, making them a subject of significant interest in biotechnology. In this study, we evaluate six representatives belonging in five species of Dunaliella, isolated from Greek solar saltworks (D. asymmetrica TAU-MAC 0620, D. viridis TAU-MAC 0920, D. granulata TAU-MAC 1120, D. minutissima TAU-MAC 1220, D. granulata TAU-MAC 1420 and D. polymorpha TAU-MAC 1520) for their growth performance and their capacity to accumulate carotenoids in response to various growth parameters. We employed an L9 Taguchi fractional experimental design to assess the impact of illumination, salinity, and nitrogen supply, each tested at three different levels. Analysis of variance revealed that the growth performance of all Dunaliella strains was primarily dictated by the applied level of light intensity, while for some strains the salinity and nitrogen supply also contribute as a significant co-factor for their growth. Overall, and despite some strain specific behaviors in response to the different levels of the applied factors, Dunalliella TAU-MAC strains seem to follow a closely similar pattern for their growth. Thus, they maximize their growth performance under the influence of the moderate level of illumination (100 μmol m-2 s-2), the moderate or even the high level of salinity (60 or 120 g NaCl L-1, respectively) , and the low level of nitrogen availability (0.2 g KNO3 L-1). Our results showed that all the examined strains were non-carotenogenic. Among the studied Dunaliella strains, D. granulata TAU-MAC 1420 showed an elevated carotenoids accumulation capacity especially under the influence of the moderate level of light intensity and the high level of salinity, achieving almost 10 mg of carotenoids production L-1, while the highest carotenoid concentration for the other Dunaliella strains was significantly lower, typically below 5 mg L-1. Through this research, we anticipate uncovering critical insights into the growth behavior and carotenoid accumulation patterns of several lesser-studied Dunaliella species

Γλωσσική εκπαίδευση μεταναστών και προσφύγων: Η περίπτωση των Τάξεων Υποδοχής
Linguistically and culturally diverse students attend a Reception Class in order to learn the Greek language. The present study investigates language teaching in the Reception Class focusing on the teaching material and method. Research data was gathered by 9 semi-structured interviews taken from Reception Class teachers and also through semi-structured teaching observations and diary keeping. Research findings have shown that the teachers are not aware of the different teaching methodology applying in the main class, where Greek is taught as a mother tongue, in relation to that of the RC where Greek is taught as a second language. At the same time, most teachers are not aware of how to face language issues related to the structure of the Greek language or issues of interference of the first language of the students. Additionally, lessons are not communicatively organized in the RC and the linguistic and academic needs of the students are not properly treated
Learners’ plurilingual profiles, multilingual needs, and relocation plans of adult migrants in Greece and Italy
The paper describes the Italian and the Greek contexts within the more complex European migration policies framework, attempting to provide a comparative approach with regard to linguistic integration aspects. The European situation regarding language requirements and learning opportunities for adult refugees and migrants has been extensively presented in the survey (Rocca et al., 2020), including both Greece and Italy, which are explored in detail in Mouti and Rocca (2023). This paper provides more detailed information based on empirical data regarding the two countries by focusing on multilingual needs, relocation plans, and plurilingual profiles. The current paper is concerned with the language teachers’ perceptions through an online questionnaire. We explore the plurilingual profiles and needs of the learners through the eyes/voices of their teachers by considering the context(s) of language use, and certainly, relocation plans that form the migrants’ journey
The reliability of Kent Bach’s Indirect Quotation test
Bach (1999) argues that the conventional type of implicature is a theoretical artifact of linguistic and philosophical semantics. If it is removed, the distinction between semantic and pragmatic meaning becomes clearer and, in this sense, the specifications of ‘what is said’ can be straightforwardly determined; and the so-called ‘indirect quotation (IQ)’ test proves purposeful to this end. In fact, an utterance’s semantic content can be determined subject to successful application of the IQ test to the utterance. The current presentation aims to unveil the problems besetting the reliability of Bach’s IQ method from the point of view of connectives, particularly because
Compositional and non-compositional aspects in southern Italo-Romance qualitative binominals
This work aims to analyze complex noun phrases of the qualitative binominal kind (an N of an N) in a Southern Italo–Romance language, namely Apulian. The principle of compositionality – even if it represents a good working hypothesis for syntactic analysis – faces several challenges with linguistic expressions such as idioms (with which binominal qualitatives share several properties), whose meaning is not yielded compositionally (Szabò, 2004). The data under analysis here are particularly interesting for two main reasons. The first pertains to the nature of the preposition, and whether it is an a priori specified element depending on the syntactic embedding; two main working hypotheses are found: Den Dikken (2006) posits two different derivations, one for binominal qualitative of and one for genitive of. On the other hand, Kayne (1994) posits a unitary derivation for both instances of the preposition. The second reason pertains to the problem of the overall interpretation of the phrase, i.e., an intersectional interpretation of the predicate and the subject of the predication, and the focus/topic subdivision in the phrase (Villalba, 2007): the interpretation depends on the marked order of the predicate with respect to the subject. Given that N1 is a predicate and usually an adjectivized noun or a nominalized adjective and that in southern Italo–Romance only few adjectives can precede a noun, cases in which the predicate precedes the noun can be considered as displaying a marked order. Even though the case of the preposition might seem a challenge for compositionality, it will be shown that a proper characterization of such an element confirms that compositionality can still account for instances such as those of binominal qualitatives
Nonconcatenative effects in Attic Greek: Lengthening as affixation of defective phonological elements
In this paper we propose a Generalized Nonlinear Affixation (Bermúdez-Otero, 2012) analysis for the formation of nominative singular in Ancient Attic Greek nouns ending in a sonorant, i.e. /n/ /dajmon-/ [dajmɔːn] ‘demon’ and /r/ /pater-/ [patεːr] ‘father’. Adopting a Distributed Morphology approach (Halle Marantz, 1993), we propose that the exponent of the nominative singular is a floating mora and a floating [–ATR] feature, which are suffixed to the base. By doing so, we restrict the morphological patterns of nominal morphology in Attic Greek to a single concept of concatenation, since we demonstrate that a seemingly processual pattern regularly derives from concatenative affixation. Additional empirical evidence for mora affixation as exponent of a morphological category is offered by two cases of plural formation as vowel lengthening from Maricopa and Nuer, showing that such processes are crosslinguistically common and concern typologically and genetically unrelated languages
Kalomiris, Palaiologos, and the Russian Operatic Tradition
Konstantinos Palaiologos (1961, based on Nikos Kazantzakis’s tragedy), the last operatic work of Manolis Kalomiris (1883-1962), and, at the same time, his swan song, stands out from the rest of his output by bringing the founding father of the Greek National School of Composers into dialogue with modernist approaches, against which he had been fighting throughout his life. In this historical opera, Kalomiris’s approach has been discussed predominantly in relation to the way it advances the composer’s post-Wagnerian idiom. Nietzschean references have also been highlighted, especially in light of Kazantzakis’s Nietzschean leanings. At the same time, Kalomiris’s more progressive (by his standards) musical language has been rightfully regarded in the context of advancing the avant-garde in post-war Greece. This paper suggests that a deeper understanding of Kalomiris’s approach in this exceptional work may be attained if we look for artistic prototypes not in the West but in the East of Greece: Russia. Kalomiris’s links with Russian musical culture are well-established. Indeed, his first professional appointment was in Kharkov, Russia (1906-1910), where he immersed himself in Russian music. More importantly, he drew inspiration from the “Mighty Handful” in propagating the founding of the Greek National School of Composers. Katy Romanou has discussed, more specifically, Rimsky-Korsakov’s influence on Kalomiris’s early operas. This paper investigates how Kalomiris drew on the Russian operatic tradition to compose his last and most progressive work: Konstantinos Palaiologos. It brings out (through musical and aesthetic analysis) links especially to Modest Musorgsky’s emblematic opera Boris Godunov, as regards dramaturgy, the musical characterization of certain figures, text setting, and the use of specific symbols to evoke the national element, thus highlighting the complexity of this masterpiece’s musical language and style
Post-Yugoslav Musical Landscapes: Restarting Musical Communications after the Wars
The article explores the processes and strategies used to re-establish broken links in the field of art music performance activities and scholarship after the end of the wars fought on the territory of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia during the 1990s. The independent states that emerged during that decade and the next had mutual relationships marked by various degrees of antagonism or rancor but also friendliness, occasionally. Two of those new states, Slovenia and Croatia, have joined the EU, whilst the others are still either candidates (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia) or potential ones (Kosovo). In the first decade following 2000, building new relationships between Yugoslavia's successor states was not easy or continuous. Although low budgets and political tensions between some of the states slowed down the realization of the goals of full normalization of mutual intercultural communication, since 2010, the situation has improved generally, supported by foreign funding. In this article, processes of rapprochement have been observed: exchanges of musicians and other artists (larger performing bodies like orchestras and opera and ballet ensembles, as well as individuals), initiatives of goodwill (demonstrations of good collegial relations between composers from the area multinational orchestras of young people touring in the region, and dance projects with the same agenda), and cooperation between music scholars from all the new states (participation in conferences, contributions to various editorial projects, such as books and journals, and joined research projects). The situation in the post-Yugoslav musical landscapes has not been normalized yet, but the first quarter of the century has seen a lot of positive initiatives and results
