    No full text
The book approaches a variety of subjects. Firstly, we have an extensive argumentation for the re-establishment of the balance between the state intervention and the market freedom. Now, when it appears more obvious than ever that the last decades in the United States face serious challenges regarding the energy assurance, the environmental protection, the medical assistance, the education and even the production, Stiglitz analyses each of them in the light of the new order of the world economy

Development and efficiency of banking and economic growth in Central and Eastern Europe

In an endogenous growth framework, well developed and efficient financial system can promote economic growth. A number of empirical studies confirmed this hypothesis. Since the financial systems of transition countries are dominated by banks, in this paper we analyze the importance of banking industry for economic growth using methods of panel data analysis for 15 Central and Eastern European countries in the period from 1992 to 2006.Using variables that measure both quantitative and qualitative aspects of financial intermediation, our findings support the view that the effectiveness of banking industry is more important than its size per se for the economic growth in the Central and Eastern European countries.

Economic-financial analysis for insurance and reinsurance company

    Get PDF
An insurance company has a value as well as its contracts. The efficiency of a company or of a Profit Centre is measurable and the profitability of an insurance product may be quantified. It is possible to assess both company and its products, and take appropriate decisions by using precise criteria. There are methods that satisfy this classic need of evaluation. For the first part of this paper, we will examine the methods like Profit Testing, Embedded Value, Value Added and Total Rate of Return in the context of an endowment insurance product. Then, along with the same example, we will present a critical approach of these methods. We will see that these methods are not always easy to understand and that sometimes the Value Added and the Total Rate of Return are not able to directly show the profitability. Finally, we will perform a sensitivity analysis in order to determine the most influential parameters. This study includes examples of an endowment, a term insurance and an annuity.Data presedent in this article are hypothetical.

Understanding and responding to the regional perceptions of the global economic crisis: towards the ”low-tech” knowledge-based approach

    Get PDF
In this paper, authors apply the 'sense-and-respond' model to understanding and modeling reactions of customers in the wider South-East European (SEE) region to the actual economic crisis. As results of the previous research indicate that the role of contemporary knowledge-based tools can serve as a complement, rather as a replacement for the 'traditional' research methodology, the role of universities and other knowledge providers to the business community in responding to the economic crisis is also critically examined. The paper suggests that development and the use of a modified 'sense-and-response' model at the industry/cluster level could assist all economic and social actors in relieving the consequences of the economic crisis/recession, as well as affirm the role of the university in the process[1].

The effects of the international financial crisis also have spread on the Romanian economy. In terms of the direct impact, the banking system was less affected by not being exposed to the toxic assets, and because of prudential and administrative measures adopted over the time by the National Bank of Romania. Indirectly, the international financial crisis is expanding on the Romanian economy on the multiple channels. The evolution of the financial crisis will lead economies into a deflationary spiral in the next year or even a longer lasting, as deficit reduction efforts will take large, and probably we shall assist an output of some euro area of weaker states.

    Metaphorical conceptualizations of marketing

    Get PDF
Currently, the centrality of marketing to enhancing the prosperity of businesses, individuals and even society is an undeniable fact. Marketing has emerged as a field worthy of being investigated by both marketing theorists and practitioners and specialized discourse researchers.  Since the apprehension of the highly complex and abstract marketing notions cannot be achieved spontaneously, metaphor represents a valuable tool for providing a better understanding of the domain in question. In this context, our paper aims to explore three of the most relevant conceptual metaphors used in relation to marketing, namely the MARKETING IS MOVEMENT, the MARKETING IS MILITARY CONFLICT and the MARKETING IS A RELATIONSHIP conceptual metaphors. Relying on a corpus formed of two notable works on marketing, we highlight the main linguistic realizations of the above-mentioned metaphors, with a focus on their emergence and prominence in close connection with the shifts in the conceptual paradigm of marketing.
