    Get PDF
The paper intends to evaluate the current state of staff development and training at tertiary educational institutions, with special emphasis on Namibia. The research adopted a meta-analytical study, which relied on secondary data. A qualitative research approach was utilised and the emic perspective (author’s view point) was employed. An empirical analysis was utilised in the paper. The authors are of the view that all staff development and training activities should be linked to the strategic goals of organisations. This paper is original since it examines staff development and training activities and various factors affecting it in higher educational institutions, which creates an opportunity for further investigation into strategic issues confronting staff development and training activities in higher education in general.

In the globalization era that we are witnessing, the social problems of welfare and development have become key points on the agendas of European countries and not only. The present economic and political context has proved once more that social welfare represents an essential objective of any society.    As the core objective of any economy is to create goods and services in order to satisfy needs on the one hand and social discontent occurs in societies characterized by obvious inequalities on the other hand, it will be natural that any nation will try to achieve a system producing social-economic welfare or, in other words a welfare economy. The role of the state in this field will consist in the creation of tools and methods which should lead to the redistribution of incomes, as economic welfare in a consumption society is deeply connected to the welfare of individuals, families, groups; consequently the standard of living becomes the most important indicator measuring the level of economic welfare. The present article is a comparative study of different types of welfare states as well as a comparative presentation of the situation of the welfare states for different European countries.

Book reviews: Errornomics – Why mainstream economics will always be a dangerously ideological pseudo-science & what can be done about it with some suggestions for a better, more scientific model

David Wells asserts the moral right to be identified as the author of Errornomics and this pamphlet based on it.Errornomics is a pre-book (by an analogy with academic pre-papers) of 214 pp. It is described on the cover as an author’s sketch because it is a record of work-in-progress. The most important arguments are laid out in detail; the less important are just sketched. It is based on the books, Power and Economics: the Failure of Ideology, [Wells 2001]; The End of Civilisation: Science, Ideology and Irrationality, [Wells 2003], both published by Rain Press, but develops their concepts much further and in new directions

    Get PDF
The utility of BI solutions is accepted all over the world in the modern organizations. However, the BI solutions do not offer a constant feedback in line with the organizational activities. In this context, there have been developed pervasive BI solutions which are present at different levels of the organization, so that employees can observe only what is most relevant to their day-to-day tasks. They are organized in vertical silos, with clearly identified performance and expectations. The paper emphasizes the role of pervasive BI solutions in reaching the key performance indicators of the modern organizations, more important in the context of crisis.

Today’s discussions on globalization are more alive and controversial. As is acknowledged as a fact, globalization is studied not only as an economic category but as a process, system, phenomenon. Currently, on international level, a variety of companies operate. From all of these, the transnational corporation represent particular interest, being designated as an "entity-key of global economic activity, a creative net worth to devote a large proportion of global resources needed to sustain economic growth processes. The new trend in the TNC’s sites emphasize, efforts to promote corporate social responsibility that contributes to change the attitude of many corporations and individuals working for them. Company efforts are visible in contributions to community development and environmental impact. Corporations want to impose their own standards of development, which reflects some positive attitude towards regulations that support behavioral codes, which they argue. Globalization has opened the way for limited progress, offered alternatives to local development, has generated deep changes, n dimensional complex with sometimes unpre-dictable consequences on economic and socio-institutional development.

As we know, the economic globalisation, correlated to other similar processes, changes the world’s configuration, if that hasn’t happened yet. People worldwide seem to increasingly realize that they belong to the world itself and not to small communities, that their development does not depend on the development of the communities, but on decision-making processes they never knew existed. In this respect, I mention a relevant case. The thousands of Romanian female textile workers active in lohn manufacturing for many years lost their jobs on account of such unknown forces. In fact, these processes emerge following production globalisation.

The purpose of health and safety procedures in the construction industry is to ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of workers. Due to high accident rates on construction sites internationally, health and safety legislation has focused on minimizing accident causation and promoting construction worker’s safety.  However, little attempts has been made to research the effects of those health and safety interventions on the safety behavior on construction sites in Romania. Therefore, the objective of this research was to explore the health and safety improvements on construction sites in Ireland and compare these with the current state-of-play of the construction sector in Romania. Based on the findings in Ireland, an opportunity exists to improve Health and Safety performance on construction sites in Romania. The main findings demonstrate that the safety can be improved through the introduction of safe working systems, enhanced regulation and enforcement, the role of the management and increased staff awareness and training
