DEVELOPING PRE-SERVICE MATHEMATICS TEACHERS’ UNDERSTANDING OF METRIC AND TOPOLOGICAL SPACES USING REFLECTIVE QUESTIONS

    Get PDF
This paper presents the ways that reflective questions were used to develop pre-service mathematics teachers’ understanding of metric and topological spaces. In particular, the purpose of developing PSTs’ understanding of metric and topological spaces is that understanding these mathematical concepts leads to PSTs’ understandings on how to teach and learn geometrical figures in mathematics classes after completion of their degree programs. This paper details the interpretation of the PSTs’ reflections on metric and topological spaces. From PSTs’ reflections, it was found that reflective questions helped individual PSTs to develop their understanding of matric and topological spaces, including giving the meaning of metric and topological spaces, and relating with real objects available in their daily environment. The findings have implications in teaching and learning metric and topological spaces. Keywords: Metric, topology, metric and topological spaces, pre-service mathematics teacher

Teaching as a profession requires professional training, knowledge, hands-on practice, certain competences to raise individuals who will shape the future of the society. Therefore, teachers should adopt key roles for societal transformation. In this study, we aimed to explore the meaning of teaching profession based on teachers’ professional experiences. We adopted a phenomenological research design focusing on the experiences of the participants and the phenomena that result from their experiences. The participants are 50 teachers working at primary, secondary and high schools in Turkey. We collected the data using a semi-structured interview form and we used inductive content analysis. At the end of the analysis, two themes emerged “teacher as a professional” and “teacher as a technician”. The results of the study will be of importance to raise awareness about these two major concepts in teaching profession and help us rethink the current roles of teachers for the society

    Get PDF
Being based on values education through distance education, this study aims to develop a scale that will provide valid and reliable results regarding prospective teachers’ attitudes towards values education through distance education. Participants of the study consist of 341 prospective teachers studying in the faculty of education. Experts were consulted for the content validity of the scale. Construct validity of the scale was ensured through exploratory factor analysis. The number of factors was determined through parallel analysis method based on Monte Carlo simulation. As a result of the analyses, a scale was developed which consists of 36 items; 15 of them negative and 21 of them positive. The scale contributes to 63,28% of the total variance. It was found that the scale had a two-factor structure. These factors were named “Necessity and Usefulness” and “Feasibility” respectively. Tukey’s Test for Non-additivity results shows that the scale does not have additivity properties. Therefore, it is not possible to obtain a total score from the whole scale. Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient for the factors of the scale for attitudes towards values education through distance education were found .97 and .96. Finally, the limitations of the study were stated and recommendations were provided.

The role of affective factors in language education is undeniable, and anxiety as one of the mostly studied affective factors plays a significant role in understanding the psychological constructs during this education process. Many studies regarding anxiety, teacher anxiety and classroom anxiety have been already conducted, yet anxiety studies concerning EFL student teachers are rare and need further elaboration. In such a study context, the present study aimed at disclosing EFL student teachers’ anxieties upon their microteachings and teaching practicum. A total of 123 EFL student teachers were participated in the study. Arising from a quantitative perspective, the data were collected through a 5-point Likert type scale titled “Foreign Language Student Teacher Anxiety Scale (FLSTA)”. The analysis of the data indicated that EFL student teachers had a moderate level of anxiety.  Inspection of gender and grade differences over anxiety levels indicated that grade made a significant difference on FLSTA, but not gender. The findings of the study would be beneficial for teacher education, supervisors and student teachers to create a moderate and comfortable environment for all the parties involved
