The aim of this study is to reveal the mediating role of cognitive flexibility of university preparatory students between their foreign language learning motivation and foreign language anxiety. The sample of the study consists of 314 volunteer students over the age of 18 and from different language levels who are studying in the English preparatory program of the Department of Foreign Languages of Eskişehir Osmangazi University in the spring term of the 2018-2019 academic year. The data of the study were collected with the "Foreign language classroom anxiety scale FLCAS)", "Cognitive flexibility inventory (CFI)", "Foreign language learning motivation scale (FLLMS)". According to the mediation test findings; It has been found that cognitive flexibility has a statistically full mediator role in the relationship between Foreign Language Learning Motivation and foreign language anxiety. Accordingly, foreign language learning motivation negatively predicts foreign language anxiety through cognitive flexibility. Preparatory students with high motivation to learn foreign languages also have high cognitive flexibility and as a result, their foreign language anxiety is lower.

In this study, it was aimed to determine the words frequently used in Turkish lullabies and to evaluate the contributions of the lullabies to language education and development through the words determined. Qualitative document analysis was used in the study. “Turkish Lullabies” by Demir and Demir (2014) and “Turkish Lullabies from Anatolia” by Demir (2018) were used as data sources.. In order to create a document pool in the study, both sources which included the lullabies used for the data of the study were transferred to digital environment. In the analysis of the data obtained, descriptive analysis method was used. Based on the word frequency determined in the lullabies, the top most frequently used 100 words were identified. Among these words, the words related to family and kinship relations and words used for metaphors were analyzed in terms of the meanings they refer to in different contexts and the functions they assume were analyzed. Considering the results obtained in the study, it is believed that the words frequently used in lullabies are the words that can be primarily preferred in children’s language development. It is clear that the lullabies, which are examined through word frequency, are sung to educate babies and children, beyond putting them to sleep. When the frequently used names expressing family ties are examined, it is noteworthy that they are definitely handled in the context of a message. As the person who sings the lullaby, the mother mostly calls out to her son and daughter. In the social context, the duties of boys and girls and their expectations from them are inscribed into the minds of children. In addition, it is noteworthy that the basic rules of the language, concepts and terms are included in lullabies in detail.

    Get PDF
While studies have been conducted to determine the social-emotional development and learning outcomes associated with participation in sports facilities, very few studies have been conducted on the university sports environment. It is important to know why university recreation centers are important for student life and to understand what benefits students derive from the program as a whole (Miller, 2011). For this reason, our study aims to examine the attitudes of Turkish students towards university sports environments. In the research, the university sports environment scale developed by Shin, Chiu and Lee (2018) and adapted into Turkish by Yılmaz and Esentürk (2020) was used. Homogeneity and cronbach alpha reliability analysis were performed on the measurement tool. After these analyses, an independent t-test for paired groups and Anova test (Benferoni) for groups of three or more were performed. SPSS program was used for these analyses. In addition, FDR analysis was performed with Graphpad Prism 9 program to avoid type I error. When the results of the study are examined; It has been determined that there are significant differences in gender, age, being a student of sports sciences and welfare level

PREDICTING PERCEIVED DIFFICULTY OF ENGLISH MEDIUM INSTRUCTION (EMI) UNDERGRADUATE COURSES

    Get PDF
Despite extensive research on students’ language-related difficulties, there is still little known about the predictors of difficulty of undergraduate courses for English Medium Instruction (EMI) students. The aim of the study was to investigate the predictive effect of several variables on the perceived difficulty of EMI from undergraduate students’ perspectives. Data came from a questionnaire applied to 511 undergraduate students from three EMI universities in Turkey. A binary logistic regression was used for the analysis of multiple determinants that could predict the difficulty of undergraduate courses as perceived by students. Findings indicated that gender, department, type of secondary school, the amount of time for self-study in English, duration and perceived usefulness of English preparatory training, and perceived ability in writing, speaking, and grammar were not statistically significant predictors of perceived difficulty. However, age, grade level, perceived ability in reading, listening, and vocabulary as well as receiving additional language support were found to be the significant predictors of the perceived difficulty in undergraduate courses in Turkish EMI settings. EMI students may benefit from orientation programs that can assist them in adjusting to university life, as well as personal academic advising that provides strategies for developing learning skills in undergraduate courses. Keywords: EMI students, undergraduate courses, perceived difficulty, logistic regression analysis
