Improving interprofessional collaboration between physicians and nurse practitioners in virtual primary care telehealth through co-management education
By 2032, it is predicted the United States’ (US) need for primary care physicians will
exceed supply by as much as 55,200 physicians. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are prepared and
positioned to help fill the primary care provider gap. The co-management model requires
interprofessional collaboration between a physician and nurse practitioner who share
responsibility in managing a patient’s healthcare needs. Improving providers’ knowledge and
attitudes toward interprofessional collaboration has the potential to lessen the primary care
provider shortage while improving patient access to care. This quality improvement project was
originally focused on improving physicians’ knowledge and attitudes toward NPs and
interprofessional collaboration in a virtual, primary care, telehealth clinic. Due to an unexpected
pandemic, data collected was modified to include changes in NP caseload and changes in NP
expectations, and roles at the project site as a result of COVID-19. The pandemic provided an

An Evaluation of the Feasibility of the Time-Lapse Electrical Resistivity Tomography Method in Quantifying Submarine Groundwater Discharge in Fine Sediment and Highly Saline, Shallow Embayments
There is uncertainty surrounding the application of the time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) method in quantifying submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). The technique has been proven effective in areas with significant differences in salinity between surface water and discharging groundwater. However, there are inherent limitations associated with the method when studying embayments with fine bottom sediments, highly saline porewaters, and shallow surface waters. To evaluate this approach, a 68-hour time- lapse ERT study was conducted at University Beach (UB) in Corpus Christi, Texas, constrained by concomitant measurements of naturally occurring isotope tracers and groundwater characterizations along the ERT profile. Surface water continuous 222Rn measurements were conducted to calculate SGD rates. Subsurface fluid conductivity measurements along the profile were constrained using inversion models via Archie’s Law (AL) and the Waxman-Smits equation (WSE). The average ERT-derived SGD rate for the study period was 26±1cm∙d-1. Average tracer-derived rates using the deep well endmember were 69±26, 49±1, 80±2, and 21±1 cm∙d-1 corresponding to 222Rn, 223Ra, 224Ra, and 226Ra, respectively. Over the course of the study 222Rn SGD estimates increased, while ERT and radium isotope estimates tended to decrease. There were no significant differences between the model accuracy of AL (R2=0.5, p<0.01) and the WSE (R2=0.5, p<0.01), thus there is no evidence that negatively charged clay particles in the subsurface matrix had any latent influence on the ERT measurements. Temperature, however, was found to be the predominant source of error in the ERT. The influence of temperature is often evident in the uppermost 1-2 m of images as temperature inflections drive the conductive recirculation of seawater. When temperature corrections were well constrained, the inversion models were significantly more successful at deriving modeled subsurface fluid conductivities closer to those observed, reducing error by up to 20%. Consequently, precise constraints on temperature are necessary to perform an effective experiment. ERT ultimately produced conservative SGD estimates relative to the radiogenic tracers. This is related to a lack of contrast between ambient and groundwater subsurface fluid conductivities. Thus, in the investigated environment, ERT may be used for qualitative and exploratory purposes, in the absence of other validating in-situ measurements.Physical and Environmental SciencesCollege of Science and Engineerin
Host-national friendship, social support, and cultural adaptation: Exploring experiences of international students in the U.S.
International students decide to study abroad to seek achievements in personal growth, intercultural development, education, and career attainment. Along with these fruitful benefits international students face a range of challenges such as language differences, cultural barriers, social disconnectedness, racial discrimination, and academic pressure. These obstacles may
negatively impact their mental health, life satisfaction, and academic performances during study abroad. Social support is one of the most effective factors that helps international students overcome these struggles. However, social support, specifically peer support requires access to and the development of relationships with peers. As such, this study investigates the process that
international students access and develop friendship with host students to receive social support.
The study also examines the way that international students perceive provisions of assistance from their host peers. Finally, the roles of peer support in helping international students adapt to host culture are explored. This study reveals several practical implications, discusses limitations, and provides suggestions for future research.Communication & MediaCollege of Liberal Art
Resilience, achievement motivation, and relational skills as predictors of perceived academic performance and college adjustment in undergraduate university students
Predictors of upperclassmen undergraduate students’ perceived academic performance and
adjustment to college were examined using four instruments. The research sample was comprised
of 308 students from South Texas and findings indicate that correlations between predictor
variables and the criterion variable student perceived academic performance produced statistically
significant positive correlations, except between achievement motivation and performance rating.
The largest positive correlations among predictor variables and the criterion variable college
student adjustment were between relational skills and achievement motivation and between
relational skills and college student adjustment. Of the three predictors, at 5.7%, resilience
uniquely accounted for the most variance in college student adjustment. Resilience significantly
predicted performance rating, and uniquely accounted for 5% of the variance in the model. The
researchers provided implications for educators, college counselors, and college administrators, as
