The authors of these proceedings came together as collaborators after meeting during the LOEX 2020 virtual conference. With a sudden shift to virtual learning, the three librarians shared ideas and methods for online engagement in library instruction. Despite their vastly different institutions, all three created active digital learning tools using components of the Google Suite of resources, namely, Docs, Forms, and Sites
Topographic Controls on Channelized Meltwater in the Subglacial Environment
Realistic characterization of subglacial hydrology necessitates knowledge of the range in form, scale, and spatiotemporal evolution of drainage networks. A relict subglacial meltwater corridor on the deglaciated Antarctic continental shelf encompasses 80 convergent and divergent channels, many of which are hundreds of meters wide and several of which lack a definable headwater source. Without significant surface-melt contributions to the bed like similarly described landforms in the Northern Hemisphere, channelized drainage capacity varies non-systematically by three orders of magnitude downstream. This signifies apparent additions and losses of basal water to the bed-channelized system that relates to bed topography. Larger magnitude grounding-line retreat events occurred while the channel system was active than once channelized drainage had ceased. Overall, this corridor demonstrates that meltwater drainage styles co-exist in time and space in response to bed topography, with prolonged impacts on grounding-line behavior

Improving provider obesity management for Latino adolescents through a clinic-community program partnership
Background: Obesity prevalence in children aged 5-19 dramatically rose from 4% in 1975 to over 18% in 2016. Rising obesity rates are linked to adverse health outcomes such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, which disproportionately threaten Latino youth in Texas, where obesity prevalence is higher in Latino children (19%) compared to Caucasian children (10%).
Objective: This quality improvement initiative used a clinic-community program partnership and the Pediatric Obesity Algorithm to improve health care providers' obesity management skills, and Latino adolescents’ weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), and healthy behaviors.
Method: A before-and-after design was used to facilitate a partnership between a family practice in central Texas and a community outreach program providing a free online coaching exercise program to overweight and obese adolescents referred by their providers. Adolescents screened and diagnosed with overweight, or obesity (n=15) received a 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go! instructional guide, monthly provider visits, pedometer, healthy habits log, and an online access code to the exercise program. Adolescents’ weight, BMI percentile, and self-reported daily health habits log, and providers’ screening and referral rates were collected at baseline and monthly for three months.
Results: Post-intervention, adolescents’ weight (p = .003) and BMI (p = .023) decreased and 95% reported improved health habits. Provider obesity screening (100%) and referral (73%) rates also improved.
Conclusion: Creating a primary clinic-community resource partnership improved providers’ obesity management, and adolescents’ health habits and significantly decreased weight and BMI for Latino adolescents in this central Texas clinic.Nursing PracticeCollege of Nursing and Health Science

Experimental-computational investigation of chiral separations with amino acid-based surfactants
This thesis research investigates the use of amino acid-based micelles to separate enantiomeric compounds. These are investigated using both, experimental and computational methods. The experimental portion of my thesis research investigates the effect of counterions on the chiral recognition of 1,1′-Binaphthyl-2,2′-diamine (BNA) and 1,1′-Binaphthyl-2,2′-diyl hydrogen phosphate (BNP) enantiomers when using an amino acid-based surfactant as the chiral pseudo stationary phase in capillary electrophoresis. The effects of sodium counterions on the chiral recognition of binaphthyl derivatives were compared to that of using pH-dependent Lysine counterions at varying pH conditions. The enantiomeric separation of BNP and BNA enantiomers via capillary electrophoresis, using L-Undecyl-Leucine (und-Leu) as the chiral recognition medium, significantly improved the enantiomeric resolution in capillary electrophoresis at pH 7 when using Lysine counterions as compared to using sodium counterions. Therefore, this experimental project provides insight into the advantages of using cationic, pH-dependent counterions such as Lysine to significantly improve the chiral recognition of binaphthyl derivatives in capillary electrophoresis studies. The computational portion of my thesis research focused on developing computational methodology to study the binding interactions between amino acid-based molecular micelles and chiral enantiomers. The computational method development plays a crucial role in helping the research advance towards the development of a predictive database. After developing a set of protocols for the computational research, the methods were then used to study the chiral separation mechanisms of Dansyl amino acids, including Dansyl-Leucine, Dansyl-Norleucine, Dansyl- Tryptophan and Dansyl-Phenylalanine binding to poly-sodium N-undecanoyl-(L)-Leucylvalinate, poly(SULV). This study reveals that the computationally-calculated binding free energy values for Dansyl enantiomers binding to poly(SULV) are in agreement with the enantiomeric order produced in experimental MEKC studies. Furthermore, hydrogen bonding analyses was used to investigate and elucidate the molecular interactions that govern chiral recognition in these molecular systems.Physical and Environmental SciencesCollege of Science and Engineerin
Patient-centered education and care coordination initiative to improve self-management skills in Latinos with multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, disabling neurological disease that attacks young adults. Similar to many other chronic conditions in patients with MS, self-management skills can improve the quality of patients’ lives. However, improvement of self-management skills remains a challenge in patients with chronic diseases, especially Latino patients with MS who struggle with language barriers and low health literacy. This quality initiative project involved the implementation of a new process for educating MS patients and coordinating their physical and occupational referrals in a privately owned neurology outpatient clinic in an urban city of Texas. A one-group, pre-test/post-test design guided the project. Baseline data were collected in the first week, followed by eight weeks of implementing changes. There was a statistically significant improvement in pre-education and post-education Multiple Sclerosis Self-Management Revised Scale (MSSM-R) scores. Post-intervention score (M = 94.7, SD = 3.6) was significantly higher than before intervention score (M = 80.7, SD = 7.7, t (7) =5.600, p =.001, d =1.97). This quality initiative project demonstrates that culturally sensitive, patient-centered education and care coordination can positively impact MS knowledge, communication, and self-management skills in Latinos with MS.Nursing PracticeCollege of Nursing and Health Science
