    In 2021, I published the middle grade novel The Street Belongs to Us (Arsenal Pulp Press), bringing together, among other influences, learning from my grandmothers’ stories, my Chicana/o/x Studies degree, my tomboy/trans childhood, and Canadian and Indigenous perspectives of the land. The following is an excerpt from the novel where the 12-year-old protagonist Alex asks her “Nana” (her grandmother) about the Chicano Movement

    Numerical Simulation of Jellyfish Swimming

    Jellyfish are considered the most energetically efficient swimmers to have ever existed, so their propulsion mechanism can be researched to improve our own underwater vehicle designs. These unique animals need to be very efficient because of their nontraditional bodily components, and because most consume limited food while they prey passively during swimming. Jellyfish accomplish their efficiency through vortex propulsion. The contraction of a jellyfish’s bell generates a vortex ring as it swims, which due to its axial symmetry we will simplify into two dimensions using two point vortices. We model these vortices using a system of differential equations, for which parameters can be selected to adjust their strength, location, and direction of rotation. To numerically solve the system, we use the fourth order Runge-Kutta method in MATLAB. The first goal of the project is to examine the jellyfish\u27s propulsion and maneuvering mechanism, which involves creating simulations for various parameter values in the system of differential equations. Secondly, we study the material transport in the vicinity of jellyfish and its implication on food acquisition. Massless particles are inserted into the fluid flow to observe how the jellyfish and these particles in its environment move through the water as affected by the vortices. To work towards these goals, we have implemented bell shapes to represent moon jellyfish, Pacific sea nettles, cannonball jellyfish, and lion’s mane jellyfish to provide a breadth of bell shapes and sizes. Each of these bell shapes serve as a barrier to material transport, so the jellyfish can capture particles from the surrounding environment. These results have significant implications for fields such as biomimetic engineering, enabling improvements to sub-aquatic vehicle efficiency and reliability, especially in cases when speed is not a priority

    In this paper, we study the KnotLink Game, a two-player game that can be played on the shadow of a knot or link diagram. This game was introduced by Adams, Henrich, and Stoll, who investigated winning strategies on certain infinite families of rational links. We focus our work on determining winning strategies for two additional infinite families of links: the pretzel link family and a family of Whitehead links

    Incorporating AI Literacy Instruction into Rhetorical Analysis Assignments

    As generative artificial intelligence (gAI) tools become increasingly prevalent, writing instructors face challenges in addressing their ethical and pedagogical implications. In response to a rise in unethical gAI usage among students in English 5 at Sacramento State, graduate teaching associates in the English department incorporated AI literacy into their sections of English 5 through a revised rhetorical analysis assignment. This study examines the implementation and impact of this instructional shift during the Fall 2024 semester, when four graduate teaching assistants (TAs) introduced ~100 students to AI literacy through structured rhetorical analysis activities. The assignment sequence included identifying rhetorical moves in scholarly articles, collaboratively constructing a rhetorical moves chart, prompting and analyzing ChatGPT outputs, and composing a comparative rhetorical analysis essay. Findings indicate that explicit AI literacy instruction significantly reduced unethical gAI usage, as reported by TAs who observed declines from 15-25% in Spring 2024 to under 5% in Fall 2024. Students engaged critically with both human-authored and AI-generated texts, recognizing limitations in gAI’s rhetorical sophistication and citation accuracy. Additionally, integrating gAI into coursework fostered a shift from a punitive approach to a collaborative learning environment, allowing students to explore AI’s strengths and weaknesses responsibly. This study underscores the importance of proactive AI literacy education in writing pedagogy, demonstrating how structured engagement with gAI can enhance critical thinking and ethical technology use in academic settings
