COVID on Trees and Infinite Grids
No full textWe use Hartnell\u27s model for virus spread on a graph, also known as firefighting. For rooted trees, we propose an Unburning Algorithm, a type of greedy algorithm starting from the leaves and working back towards the root. We show that the algorithm saves at least half the vertices of the optimal solution and that this is bound is sharp. We confirm a conjecture of Hartke about integrality gaps when comparing linear and integer program solutions. For general graphs, we propose a Containment Protocol, which looks ahead two time steps to decide where to place vaccinations. We show that the protocol performs near optimally on four well-studied infinite grids. The protocol is available for any graph and we realize this flexibility by investigating an infinite pentagonal graph
Better Together: Academic and Industry Collaboration for Experiential Learning
No full textConnecting experiential education (EE) and career readiness (CR) is essential for students’ long-term career development. As we envision the future and “SEE the way forward” of making stronger connections between EE & CR, we present this innovative collaborative of faculty, staff, and employers, and present several case examples of different ways we engage employers with EE inside and outside of the classroom. The goal of this conference session was to spark creativity through our examples and give participants time to ideate how they might absorb, tweak, build upon these ideas to work in their unique campus contexts

Music Review: When Dreams Begin Again: A Reflection on New Order’s ‘Dreams Never End’
Get PDFIt is essential before we begin this review to speak about New Order’s origins. Joy Division’s origins trace back to the post-punk era of late 1970s Manchester, England–a city immersed in industrial decline, unemployment, and social unrest. The band emerged as part of the punk rock movement but soon developed a distinct sound that fused punk’s raw energy with a darker, more atmospheric and introspective musical style. Originally formed in 1976 under the name Warsaw by schoolmates Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook, Joy Division took shape when they recruited drummer Stephen Morris and lyricist/vocalist Ian Curtis, solidifying their lineup in 1977. The name “Joy Division” itself is steeped in controversy, as it referred to the sexual slavery units depicted in The House of Dolls, a novel about Nazi concentration camps, signaling the band’s willingness to confront dark and taboo subjects in their work. The group quickly became known for their minimalist yet haunting sound, blending sparse guitar work, Hook’s melodic basslines, Morris’s robotic drumbeats, and Curtis’s distinctive baritone voice. Under the guidance of their producer Martin Hannett, Joy Division’s sound took on a more experimental and ambient tone, which was showcased in their seminal 1979 album Unknown Pleasures. Songs like “She’s Lost Control” and “Disorder” combined cold, detached instrumentals with Curtis’s deeply introspective and often bleak lyrics. His writing reflected themes of isolation, anxiety, and existential dread, resonating with a generation confronting the uncertainty and disillusionment of post-industrial Britain. 
The Sexist Colonial Feminism of the Israeli Defense Narrative: Gender-Based Digital Militarism during Israel’s Genocide in Gaza
No full textIsrael often presents itself as a beacon for women\u27s rights in the Middle East. This analysis of Israeli social media activity suggest that this portrayal is incorrect. Female IDF soldiers are often serialized for propaganda purposes and male IDF soldiers often post pictures of themselves in the Gaza strip wearing dresses and lingerie of displaced or killed Palestinian women. Furthermore, Israels occupation and current genocide in Gaza made Israel the main reason for the dire situation of Palestinian women. Additionally, different fractions of the Palestinian resistance exhibit a vision of women with a stronger emphasis on the liberation of women than Israel does. This paper bears witness to the distortion of Israels view on women. 
Public Opinion and Repression in Anti-war Student Protests from 1960-2024: Vietnam War and Palestine Protests
No full textAbstract: This paper aims to understand the relationship between public opinion, law enforcement reactions, and administrative and state repression from 1960 to 2024, focusing on the Vietnam War and Palestine student protests. The history of protests, public opinion and repression of each movement is covered. Content analysis and archival data are analyzed in order to better understand the public’s reaction to the pro-Palestine protests and its relationship to protest coverage. A survey is proposed in order to expand the data on this topic and deepen the analysis of this relationship. The geological patterns of dissent and repression are analyzed, along with theories of repression and criticality
