    Get PDF
Amid countless challenges faced by teacher education, public universities, preparing a large share of the nations\u27 teachers, are called upon to a lead the charge of moving the field forward. The American Association of State Colleges and University\u27s Teacher Education Task Force sought to examine current conditions among member institutions. Presidents, provosts and deans of education responded to a survey with their assessment of the current status of teacher education. The results yielded six recommendations for quality teacher education programs. The latter of which stresses professionalizing the field. Further examination of the recommendations reveals gaps between the current landscape and the recommendations. It is through these gaps that a strategic means to advance the professionalization of teacher education is put forth. Advancing the professionalization of teacher education is a collaborative effort of leadership. The process demonstrates and builds momentum from positive impact on communities and the profession itself. It is undergirded by an ethical imperative

Latina Educational Trajectories to the Academy: Early Experience, Education Policies, and Mentoring

    No full text
In this article, I examine three Latinas’ early educational experiences, key individuals who shaped their academic paths, their mentorship influences, and the policies and programs that propelled them to complete their doctoral studies. I offer an in-depth analysis, situated in Latinx critical theory (LaCrit) and Chicana feminist theory, of a group of Latinas in the academy, the individuals, education policies, and institutional resources that shaped that their trajectories. I discuss two findings that emerged in their early and doctoral education experiences: the role of education policies and programs as experienced by them, and how race and racism intersected with their educational trajectory. I offer two recommendations to improve pathways for Latina doctoral students: continued advocacy for education policies that widen opportunities and implementation of asset-based mentoring programs

We describe the planar rook category, the rook category, the rook-Brauer category, and the Motzkin category in terms of generators and relations. We show that the morphism spaces of these categories have linear bases given by planar rook diagrams, rook diagrams, rook-Brauer diagrams, and Motzkin diagrams

The Revolutionary Effect: An Analysis of the Afro-Cuban Perspective

    Get PDF
The Cuban Revolution sought to eradicate class, racial, and gender discrimination, yet under Fidel Castro, rhetoric concerning race became intolerable. Revolutionaries argued that because the Revolution abolished segregation and illiteracy across the island, it, therefore, did not concern itself with color. Leading scholars such as Aline Helg, Esteban Morales Dominguez, Alejandro De La Fuente, and Ada Ferrer have explored social, cultural, and political aspects concerning race and the Revolutionary government. This paper seeks to add to the conversation by analyzing US imperialism under the Cuban Revolution. Why did racial discrimination exist post-Revolution, even though its leaders, claimed its eradication? In what ways did discrimination take form for Afro-Cubans, such as in the workplace and politically? By using historical monographs, speeches, the 1940 and 1976 Cuban constitution, this research will examine the lived experience of Afro-Cubans and how under the Revolution political representation and lucrative job positions in the tourism industry, Afro-Cubans remained underrepresented

Developing a Model for Effective Community Organizing Training

    Get PDF
This study is based on research conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a three-day community organizing training workshop involving 38 organizers based in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. The training was co-sponsored by the McCune Foundation, Fund for Santa Barbara, Kaiser Permanente Foundation and Weingart Foundation. Data were collected through baseline surveys conducted with training participants and the Executive Directors of their organizations, as well as field observations by researchers from California State University Channel Islands during the training in April 2017. Descriptive statistics and t-tests were used to analyze survey results, and thematic analysis was performed on the field observation data. The analyses led to a list of recommendations for foundations interested in hosting similar events in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties and beyond in the future

Academic Advising and the Evaluation of Student Petitions: A Vehicle for Student Equity and Justice

    Get PDF
At some universities, academic advisors manage the evaluation of petitions, while at others it is the responsibility of the Registrar’s office.  For the purposes of this article, petitions are requests initiated by students for some sort of exception to a stated rule or policy.  Decisions a university makes on these types of petitions can have long-reaching implications for a student’s time to degree, GPA, and even degree completion.  As a result, those who evaluate these petitions and the processes they use to make these evaluations, play a central role in student success and retention.  Based on the literature and my own professional experience, I argue that academic advisors are the individuals best qualified to evaluate these cases, and that this contributes to institutional equity as it reduces administrative barriers for students.&nbsp

In 2012, Laguna Vista School in the Ocean View School District, Ventura County, implemented a program of reading intervention services to struggling readers. The program provides a mix of push-in and pull-out services led by a credentialed teacher and several instructional assistants. This program evaluation was designed to determine the impact of the program created for students who were not reading at grade level. Five years of reading achievement data from the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) and three years of Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) English Language Arts/Literacy were analyzed to determine program impact. The study found that basic reading skills of students who received reading intervention services grew significant with some effect sizes exceeding two standard deviations.  Growth on Common Core State Standard assessments, however, were not as impressive. Recommendations for reading comprehension improvement are provide
