Acompañamiento Educativo en el Altiplano Occidental de Guatemala : Una Introspección Histórica sobre Políticas, Prácticas y Transformación Educativa

    Get PDF

    VALUES EMBDDED IN THE BHAGAVADGĪTĀ

    Get PDF
The Ethical philosophy of the Bhagavadgītā is centered on the assimilation of diverse values and it can provide a harmonized ethical view of life and hence it may be called Jīvangītā (song of life) which is proposed to be highlighted here. It rejects the extreme conditions of life. It does not accept the hedonistic attitude for the attainment of pleasure. The world of sense and sensibility is recognized by the Gītā. It brings harmony between reason and passion after solving the conflict (Srinivasachari, 1986: 34-35). In the Bhagavadgītā there is the harmonization of ascent and descent. It ascends to the transcendental from the empirical and descends from the absolute stage of realization of Supreme Self to the practical concerns of everyday life, which has some specific value of its own

NĀGĀRJUNA’S ŚŪNYATĀ: BEYOND BEING AND NOTHINGNESS

    Get PDF
Śūnyatā has been one of the most misunderstood terms in the history of philosophy. It has been conceived sometimes as an Absolute and sometimes as pure nothingness. Often it has been identified with truth and most often it has been understood as falsity. Traditionalists insist that it is beyond all the categories. On the other hand the same people would say that Śūnyatā is not a transcendent reality. It is just the relativity of all phenomena, the emptiness of all entities. My purpose in the present paper is to ascertain the true import of Śūnyatā. My view is that Śūnyatā is neither Being nor Nothingness. It is beyond all the dichotomies of real and unreal, being and non-being. This does not mean that Nāgārjuna is presenting a new revolutionary ontology quite different from the traditional logic or metaphysics. In fact Logic and Metaphysics are the last concern of the Buddha. Nāgārjuna neither refutes any metaphysics nor presents any new one. He just puts everything as it is and evokes us to be just in tuned with it. By proving all the dharmas (phenomena) empty of their own independent existence and essence he calls us to enter the realm of Dharmatā and Tathatā

The book under review is the two volume Dynamics of the Language: Philosophy of The World of the Words. 1 As the sub-title suggests, the author’s claim that he is presenting for the first time a philosophy of the world of the words that is, the world of intelligible beings only and even so independently of intermingling metaphysical beings and our allegiances to them. In fact, this work is the third in the series of the author’s engagement with the philosophy of language and grammar. The other two being “The Central Problems of Bhartṛhari’s Philosophy” (2008) and “Language, Being and Cognition” (2012). Here we find the author developing his thoughts further as presented in his earlier writings

SOCIAL STATUS OF DEVADASIS DURING THE 7TH AND 8TH CENTURIES IN TAMILNADU

Religions are not just systems of belief; they are also organizations, or parts of organizations. They have a communal and social significance, which goes by the name of social dimension. The social shape of a religion is of course, to some extent determined by the religious and ethical ideals and practices that it harbors. Conversely, it often happens that the religious and ethical ideals are adapted to existing social conditions and attitudes. It is incidentally, clear that the ongoing patterns of ritual are an important element in the institutionalization of religion, if it is believed that certain ceremonies and sacraments can be properly performed only by a priest, then the religious institution will be partly determined to the need to maintain and protect a professional priesthood and the institution of the devadasis in the temples. The devadasi system was a popular institution in the history of early India. Were serving the gods in the temples throughout India. M. S. Aiyangar says that the aesthetic arts were given a religious tone from about the 7th century CEwhen dancing and playing dramas were encourage to draw large crowds of devotees to the temples. Thus, hundreds of dancing girls or gandharvirs was attached to every important temple. According to K. K. Pillay the system became common in South Indian temples only after the 7th century CE The creation of the institution of devadasis, the carving of the Maithuna sculpture in temples, and the exhibition of sex influence in religious rituals in India. These, raised their ugly heads only after the 8th century CE, a period of decadence in Indian culture

    TRACING CONFUCIANISM IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA

    Get PDF
With the reform and opening policy implemented by the Chinese government since the late 1970s, mainland China has witnessed a sustained resurgence of Confucianism first in academic studies and then in social practices. This essay traces the development of this resurgence and demonstrates how the essential elements and authentic moral and intellectual resources of long-standing Confucian culture have been recovered in scholarly concerns, ordinary ideas, and everyday life activities. We first introduce how the Modern New Confucianism reappeared in mainland China in the three groups of the Chinese scholars in the Confucian studies in the 1980s and early 1990s. Then we describe how a group of innovative mainland Confucian thinkers has since the mid-1990s come of age launching new versions of Confucian thought differing from that of the overseas New Confucians and their forefathers, followed by our summary of public Confucian pursuits and activities in the mainland society in the recent decade. Finally, we provide a few concluding remarks about the difficulties encountered in the Confucian development and our general expectations for future

THE EARLY MODERN EUROPEAN (NON) RECEPTION OF TH E ZHUANGZI TEXT

    Get PDF
This essay draws attention to the neglect of a key foundational text of Daoism, namely the Zhuangzi in early modern European discourses about China. It traces the contrasting Jesuit interaction with Confucianis m as opposed to Buddhism and Daoism in order to emphasize how a text like the Zhuangzi was unable to be assimilated with the Catholic mission of accomodationism. It contrasts the non reception of the text in early modern Europe with its later popularity following publication of full English translations at the end of the nineteenth century. It argues that the early neglect and later explosive discovery of the Zhuangzi in the West can tell us much about shifts in intellectual history, specifically the misapp ropriations and misunderstandings of Daoist traditions as filtered through the European mind

THE METAPHYSICAL PRINCIPLE IN THE BHAGAVADGĪTĀ 2.27

    Get PDF
A metaphysical principle is stated in Bhagavadgītā 2.27, which deals with the relationship between the first and the last of the six vikāras (modes) of bhāva (being). But, none of the traditional commentators of the Bhagavadgītā could grasp the exact meaning and significance of this metaphysical principle. These commentators turned the metaphysical principle erroneously into a theory of cycle of birth and death in the saṃsāra governed by law of karma. The traditional commentators are not actually faithful to the nuances of the terms and syntax of the verses due to their prior doctrinal commitments, which prevent them from seeing the meaning present in them. The modern commentators like Angelika Malinar see Bhagavadgītā 2.27 as part of a Kṛṣṇa’s speech of consolation for grieving Arjuna. This reading is also problematic. If Kṛṣṇa’s speech in Bhagavadgītā 2.11-30 is a speech of consolation then given the kind of metaphysical statements are included in the speech, it would also automatically become a speech for justification of killing and war. It will be argued in the present essay that the metaphysical principle stated in Bhagavadgītā 2.27 is necessary for explaining the idea of yajña karma, which is collective institutional action

Assessing Social and Emotional Learning in Physical Education Through Photo Journaling

    Get PDF
Photovoice seeks to change policy and enhance lives by creating dialogue about personal and communal strengths through introspection and reflection of photographs. Similarly, photo journaling provides opportu-nities for participants to express themselves and become self-aware through reflection of visual imagery. Photo journaling may also be used as a qualitative means for physical educators to authentically assess social emotional learning (SEL) within the classroom and provide opportunities for students to build interpersonal and intrapersonal relationship skills (IIRS) that can be applied to all aspects of their life. The objective of this paper is to provide physical educators with an outline to the A.R.T. (authentic, relevant, and transformation-al) assessment of social and emotional health within the classroom through the use of photo journaling
