A HIDDEN THEORY OF MIND IN JOUREY TO THE WEST
The essay demonstrates that ‘Journey to the West’ (JW) treats all Buddhist and Daoist scriptures as cannons for cultivating the mind. Since the novel explicitly states that Sun Wukong is resolved to cultivate Xuan (玄), Xuan should be interpreted as a faculty of the mind, which has never been done before. A hermeneutic reading of the novel and Dao De Jing (DDJ) under the constraint that all text are referring to minds gives rise to a tri-part model, which consists of an “empty” mind state free of concepts, a mindful state filled with concepts, and a dualistic mind faculty that goes between the other two (Xuan). By this token, it can be established that the protagonist Tripitaka represented the “empty” mind, while the protagonist Wukong represents the dualistic Xuan. This understanding thus makes it possible to explain the relationship between Daoism and Buddhism in JW. Without Buddhist Tripitaka, Wukong would be lost due to his desires that drive Xuan. Without Daoist Wukong, who had insight into the forms of the Way, Tripitaka would fall for distractions and misunderstandings. Thus, only when Buddhism and Daoism are combined, we can get the true Buddhist sutras. This analysis also makes it possible to understand the core debate between the southern and northern lineage of Daoism, and JW’s stance on such debates
THE BODY: WHAT VIPASSANA MEDITATION REVEALS ABOUT HOW WE ARE CONNECTED TO THE WORLD
I recently completed a brief refresher course in Vipassana meditation after some personal setbacks disrupted my fledgling practice and accompanying equanimity. It was much needed. My mojo is back, and I know more definitively than ever that the key to my personal happiness is daily meditation. The reason why this is so important is that (as I said previously) Vipassana meditation is to the mind what physical exercise is to the body: it is necessary for good health. It is actually more vital than physical exercise insofar as the body can be exercised while the mind is on autopilot, whereas meditation requires the vigilant awareness of the intertwining of mind and body. In other words, it is possible to have a healthy body while possessing a diseased mind (e.g. “meatheads”) whereas a healthy mind will invariably lead to a healthier body. This is not to say that a Vipassana meditator cannot suffer from cancer. But a meditator who has cancer will be in much better shape than a non-meditator who is similarly afflicted. The bottom line is that the mind and body are inextricably tied together, and a well-ordered soul is axiomatically (as philosophers East and West have recognized since ancient times) one in which the mind rules over the body

Supporting Teacher Candidates During COVID-19: Lessons Learned
This article provides the personal account of two professors who reflect on the challenges of teacher education preparation due to COVID-19. They discuss the swift transition from face to face instruction to virtual learning and teaching including inequities faculty and teacher candidates faced during remote learning, obstacles surrounding state requirements for practicums and certification along with the social emotional impact. Suggestions for moving forward, based on the lessons learned, include additional supports for teacher candidates.
Propaganda on the American Home Front : The Driving Force of Mobilization
This paper explores the impact of propaganda filled mediums and their relationship to the mobilization of predominantly women and children on the American home front during World War II. Primary sources such as posters, pamphlets, films, and booklets were used as evidence to demonstrate how propaganda consumed many aspects of American life to support the war effort. This paper also explores the effectiveness of these propaganda filled mediums while also acknowledging that other factors such as economic-based were also of great importance in the mobilization of many people.
VEDIC CONCEPT OF ṚTA
The term ‘ṛta’ is used in the specific sense in the RG Veda. The term “ṛta” occurs in the RG Veda approximately four hundred and fifty times. The methods employed in this paper deal with only a limited percentage of the actual occurrences of ṛta in the RG Veda. Hence the conclusion or findings will not be finally validated until all of the usages of ṛta have been examined
MĪMĀṀSĀ THEORY OF APŪRVA
In the process of establishing the authority of the Veda, so far as knowledge of Dharma is concerned, Mīmāṁsā evolved many innovative ideas which may be applied in the contemporary field of discourse-analysis. Many of these ideas were the outcome of their dialogue with the heterodox systems of Indian Philosophy. Apūrva is one of them and is advanced to explain the cause and effect relationship between a sacrifice and its result. The primary aim of the system was to observe that no sentence of the Veda should remain redundant. The application of the Apūrva theory to the karma doctrine explains the disparities in the world
