Guatemalan Migration to Los Angeles:: Struggle for Survival

    Get PDF
The Guatemalan migration to Los Angeles hides behind a violent thirty-year Civil War that lasted from 1960 to 1996; the violent events started after the USA supported a coup against the Guatemalan president Jacobo Arbenz. The coup marked the beginning of political instability in Guatemala. The instability led to the formation of guerrilla groups seeking to overthrow the military regime; the confrontation by both groups occurred in the highlands of Guatemala, where many of the indigenous villages were decimated, and its populations almost eradicated. As a result, an increased number of indigenous populations started escaping the political violence they faced by guerrilla and military groups and began migrating to Los Angeles.  The number of indigenous people arriving in Los Angeles increased dramatically during the 1980s and 1990s; however, these communities continued to face adversities upon arrival in Los Angeles. The indigenous communities had to find ways to maintain their culture alive and settle in Los Angeles. This paper will seek to explore how the civil war in Guatemala led to an increased number of Guatemalans arriving in Los Angeles, focusing on the Mayan Kanjobal community. The paper will also focus on the settlement of the Kanjobales in the West-Lake and Pico-Union region of Southern Los Angeles and the ways their culture was challenged upon arriving at Los Angeles

Manifolds With Bounded Integral Curvature and no Positive Eigenvalue Lower Bounds

    Get PDF
We provide an explicit construction of a sequence of closed surfaces with uniform bounds on the diameter and on Lp norms of the curvature, but without a positive lower bound on the first non-zero eigenvalue of the Laplacian λ1. This example shows that the assumption of smallness of the Lp norm of the curvature is a necessary condition to derive Lichnerowicz and Zhong-Yang type estimates under integral curvature conditions

Response to Management in a Hispanic Farmworker Community in Rural Florida

In Tyson et al You Have to Control It However You Can”: Type 2 Diabetes Management in a Hispanic Farmworker Community in Rural Florida, they argue that political and economic factors affect rural Hispanic farmworkers in Florida who use self-managed health care practices. These practices are primarily more fitness, herbal remedies, controlling their emotions, eating healthier and taking prescriptions. The local clinic in Florida in West-Central Florida noted that due to the diabetes management in poor socioeconomic standards the Hispanic community has poor glycemic control and those few who are able to get the donated insulin, later, resort to other oral medications. However, the ability to not afford healthcare is just one of the barriers that the rural Hispanic farmworkers in Florida face

Ethnic Studies and the Enduring Legacy of Movements for Racial Justice in California

    Get PDF
An interdisciplinary field, ethnic studies examines race, ethnicity and indigeneity with a special focus on four groups that have been historically racialized in the United States and beyond: African Americans, Asian American & Pacific Islanders, Chicanas/os & Latinas/os, and Native Americans.  The historic passage of California’s Assembly Bill No. 1460 (AB1460) in 2020 calls for all incoming students across the California State University (CSU) system to complete a course in Ethnic Studies in order to graduate.  For many supporters of Ethnic Studies, the signing of AB1460 into law is a long overdue recognition of the impact of Ethnic Studies to better prepare university students for a twenty first century world that still grapples with systemic racism and inequity.        Rooted in the racial justice struggles of the 1960s, proponents of Ethnic Studies argue that the field’s pedagogical and epistemological tools allow for the self-representation of communities that have been historically mischaracterized and misrepresented.  As such, Ethnic Studies prioritize equity and agency by its empowerment of students of all backgrounds to be voices for change

Models for Social and Emotional Learning in Physical Education

    Get PDF
Social and emotional learning (SEL) has garnered a lot of attention as playing a critical role in developing the whole child in K12 educational settings. Adventure-based learning, sport education, and teaching personal and social responsibility are considered to be valid pedagogical models that physical educators can consider incorporating into the curriculum to help promote a range of human relationship skills. These three physical education models have a long and evidence based history in helping teachers structure means through which SEL outcomes can come to fruition. A primary focus of this paper is to highlight the key features associated with each model that specifically address SEL acquisition for students. Additional resources and pedagogical tips for teachers to enhance SEL are also provided

Using the Particle Model to Find Structure in Eilenberg-MacLane Spaces

    Get PDF
We introduce two models, the bar construction and the particle model, for a collection of spaces known as Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. These spaces can be used as building blocks for other spaces and are of great interest throughout topology. We use these models to compute the homology groups for one Eilenberg-MacLane space in an intuitive and accessible way, and then show how the models can be used to determine the cell structure for additional cases using combinatorial arguments. An introduction to cellular homology and examples are included along the way

A Review of Indigenous Maya Resistance in Colonial Yucatan

    Get PDF
In this article, historian John F. Chuchiak IV explores the nature of colonial Mayan writing as an effective resistance against their Spanish colonizers. The Missionaries set up throughout the Yucatan peninsula aimed at not only converting the Maya to Christianity but also teaching them the use of the “formal” ways of writing in the Latin alphabet. To resist, elite Mayan nobility taught themselves to blend both the Latin alphabet and the use of their Mayan hieroglyphs into their documents, diaries, and other written scripts. The Mayan elite was able to create a system all their own, named “Maya formulary”, which used their system of graphic pluralism along with the alphabetic writing that was enforced and taught by the Franciscan friars

The Economic Impact of Rock Climbing in Bishop, California

    Get PDF
This study examined the economic impact of rock climbing in Bishop, California. Bishop is a popular climbing and bouldering destination located in Inyo County. The authors estimated Bishop receives 88,890 climbing-related visits annually alongside 15.6millioninclimbingcommunityexpenditures.However,theauthorsestimatethatvisitationwasreducedby6515.6 million in climbing community expenditures. However, the authors estimate that visitation was reduced by 65% from 2019 to 2020 due to pandemic travel closures and reluctance to travel. This equates to roughly 10 million dollars in lost expenditures

Special Education Teachers in Residence: New Teachers for the Prairie

    Get PDF
Rural schools face unique challenges recruiting teachers. Rural school administrators report difficulties finding qualified applicants. Unique challenges rural special education teachers face, e.g., working with a more diverse group of students including those with significant disabilities, heighten the difficulties rural administrators experience when recruiting and retaining qualified special education teachers. Leveraging university/rural school partnerships, e.g., resident teacher university/school partnerships, can help rural schools recruit and retain qualified special education teachers. This article describes the Teachers College Special Education Fellowship Program (TCSEFP), a virtual residency in teaching program. This program established virtual partnerships between the university and numerous rural school districts throughout the state. The article includes a description of the program, evaluation data, and implications for other virtual university/school residency in teaching programs
