    Pearl Harbor, 1941

    No full text
The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is one of the most memorable moments in United States history. As time has passed, new evidence has been discovered by scholars that presents a few interesting themes. One is that the bombing was not a complete surprise, meaning that there were multiple individuals who had some awareness of the possibility of an attack. The second is that the damage experienced by the United States was not quite as devastating as previously thought. Through this essay, I hope to answer these questions and provide insight on some of the new information that has emerged over the years since 1941.&nbsp

Visions for Justice and Critiquing Consent: On Taking Performativity Out of Performance

In lieu of an abstract, here\u27s an excerpt:  "We live in a society built on a foundation of oppressive systems and upheld by the vilification of boundaries. Consent is our answer to that. It’s the reclamation of power for the powerless and the notion of its failure, in any context, is activating and at times, can even be re-traumatizing. In entertainment, Intimacy specializations in live performance, film and television were born to prevent re-traumatization and facilitate the end of the collective experience of dehumanization in our industry. [...] However, there are often moments in creative processes where the more ‘black and white’ definitions of consent as freely communicated, retractable and informed fail to acknowledge moments where past trauma, power dynamics, and a lifetime of systemically ingrained silence create ambiguity. [...] the purpose of this essay is to highlight the expansive and revolutionary opportunities that exist when we move away from treating any word, framework or methodology as absolute truth. It’s an invitation to re-examine the best of solutions, to identify the gaps, and to find new methods of filling them. In order to do that, we need to identify the language of the industry, align our definitions, and dissect them.

Project IICE : Inspiring Interdisciplinary Collaboration Experiences

    No full text
Project IICE was a multi-disciplinary learning experience designed for students at Southern New Hampshire University. Students worked together in teams to communicate scientific data that was initially collected by an Introductory Botany class. Students in this course measured trees and recorded variables, including tree height, diameter, species, and canopy cover. They shared the data with students in freshman Statistics courses, who analyzed mathematically for trends. Finally, students in Graphic Design used the data to create visual representations and icons. Students collaborated in groups that were randomly assigned across all of the courses to include members of each discipline. During the process, each student was required to help others in the group understand the meaning of the data, through the collection, analysis, and design phases. In the final group poster presentations, students explained the meaning and value of each part. The emphasis was on their ability to communicate the significance of each part of the process, which helped them appreciate how the discipline they were working in contributed to the overall success of the project. The real-world data provided a context for students to experience working in cross-discipline teams, and sharpened communication skills

Community Engagement through Interactive Field-Based Activities

    No full text
This qualitative case study consisted of social justice interactive field-based experiential learning activities designed to understand community partnerships between a university and local public school. The research question was: How can interactive field-based activities build closer community ties? The theoretical foundation incorporated Ken Zeichner’s “hybrid spaces” with the premise of field-based interactive experiences. The findings indicated the need for further activities that create partnerships between teacher education programs and neighboring public schools
