    Get PDF
This study explores the influences of socioeconomic factors on residential integration. Data was collected through an internet questionnaire and respondents were gathered by snowball technique. Residential integration is measured by the percentage of White individuals living in the respondent\u27s specific ZIP Code based off information from the U.S. Census Bureau. The author proposes that an increase in socioeconomic status will lead to an increase in residential integration. Despite having mixed results, a significant positive correlation was found between one\u27s level of education and residential integration, supporting a part of the author\u27s original hypothesis

    Get PDF
The author provides a detailed history of Mexican Americans and their experiences with American society. Mexican Americans faced adversity in American society dating back to the Mexican American War and still encounter racial discrimination to this day. Seen as second class citizens by many in the United States and labeled "white-washed" traitors by immigrant communities, Mexican Americans have difficulty integrating themselves into society without some form of backlash. This article covers the Mexican American experience in an effort to spread awareness about their struggles and hopefully end the discrimination that they have faced for so long

How The Devil Influenced Rock and Metal

    Get PDF
If folktales are to be believed, the Devil seems to have quite the interest in music. From the satanic imagery in metal, the legendary fiddle duel in “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” to the legend of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the Devil at a crossroads. It would appear that the Prince of Darkness likes a good tune as much as you and I. He has been present every step of the way in popular music throughout the last century. The relationship between the Devil and music goes back centuries, but this paper begins in the Delta with Tommy Johnson and Robert Johnson (no relation) and how they both made deals with the Devil, continues with an analysis of how the Devil influenced rock and metal as we know today, and concludes with an examination of how Satan remains as the most powerful symbol of absolute rebellion in music today

Do we Get More Points if we Take Bigger Risks? Modeling Boundary-Setting in the Undergraduate Acting Classroom

    No full text
Building from the ideas and practices of Theatrical Intimacy Education which provide guidance on how to set and communicate boundaries, this essay will outline some tools that may help educators and directors facilitate frank and open conversations about the decision-making processes that go into boundary-setting and giving informed consent. The article lays out how Theatrical Intimacy Education’s work around consent and boundaries may be put into productive conversation with applied theatre’s work around risk. The author describes the ways that they have engaged in conversations with their own undergraduate acting students about risk and boundary-setting in the context of devised performance. Finally, combining concepts from intimacy direction, applied theatre, and trial-and-error pedagogical praxis, they propose a framework and tool that theatre educators and directors might use to facilitate conversations about risk, boundaries, and consent in their own classrooms

Healthy Street Operations Center: "Safe and Clean Streets"

    Get PDF
Over the last four decades, cities have implemented several iterations of care and disciplinary programs address homelessness without success. San Francisco’s Healthy Street Operations Center (HSOC) was established in 2016 to address homelessness in San Francisco. The Healthy Street Operations Center aims to provide a coordinated response between the Department of Public Health, Department of Public Works, Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing,Department of Emergency Management, and the San Francisco Police Department. One of the main objectives of the Healthy Street Operations Center is to maintain “safe and clean”  streets for the city of San Francisco. Research suggests Healthy Street Operations Center mainly responds to the safety concerns of business and property owners, rather than the needs of unsheltered residents.  This research utilized textual analysis of internal documents to show prioritization of San Francisco’s financial interests is transparent in the day-to-day management of homelessness. The Healthy Street Operations Center embodies sentiments of compassion for the homeless as well as attitudes of paternalism and punishment. These conflicting beliefs express themselves through the HSOC’s tactics to remove signs of poverty and homelessness from the view of business and property owners as well as the language used to justify it. The research in this paper will show that HSOC has not achieved its goal of reducing or containing encampments. HSOC continues to be funded by the city despite its ineffectiveness, and diverts money away from viable solutions to reduce and contain homelessness
