The Mixed Finite Element Method Based on the Crank-Nicolson Scheme for Darcy Flows in Porous Media
This article is devoted to the a priori error estimates of the fully discrete Crank-Nicolson approximation for the Darcy flows. Optimal order error estimates in two different norms are established for the lowest order. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical analysis regarding convergence rates
Housing Affordability via Decommodification and Public Investment: A Comparative Analysis of Vienna and San Francisco
Vienna leads the world in affordable housing due to its century long, sustained political commitment and investment toward de-commodifying housing. This commitment is evident in the size of its subsidized housing as a portion of its total housing stock, the design, access, and quality of its subsidized stock, and the size of its funding on producing affordable housing. In contrast, San Francisco is consistently one of the most expensive cities in the world, as previous, market-based policies simply have not produced adequate housing. While it is attempting to rectify the situation, it’s clear that a new agenda should be endorsed. Vienna’s approach appears superior but would need significant political support and financial investment to address San Francisco’s housing. As a percentage of their city budgets, annualized spending on affordable housing amounted to a more than fivefold difference between Vienna (4.3%) and San Francisco (0.8%). San Francisco is far behind in the maturity of its development ecosystem, and should embrace the simple, but not easy, path that Vienna began a century ago. Ultimately, sustainable funding needs to be raised locally through bonds or taxes
A Comparison Between Stochastic and Deterministic Models of a Biological Oscillator
We look at the behavior of biological oscillators, specifically analyzing a genetic circuit that has oscillatory behavior. Implementing the system in deterministic and stochastic models, we compare the two models using various tests and analyze the effect of stochastic noise on these oscillations. We first investigate the effect of volume and find that at small system volumes, stochastic events cause the system to exhibit more sporadic oscillations and a longer period of oscillation. Next, we develop classification systems for discerning the boundary in the parameter space where the model begins to show oscillations. This is more challenging in the stochastic model, due to persistent fluctuations. We compare different methods of analysis of our deterministic and stochastic models and visualize the conditions which lead to oscillation in each model. We find that the parameter range of oscillation is larger in the stochastic model than in the deterministic model. Finally, we find an increased rate of mRNA production can create greater noise in a system and amplify the difference between a stochastic and deterministic system
Drug Policy Reform and Rehabilitation Opportunities to Reduce Recidivism and Improve Lives
The drug crisis in the United States is one of extreme magnitude, and one that is highly divisive because there is no clear solution. There are certainly some people who will never have the desire to get clean nor to stay out of prison; and they will remain in a cyclical system of release and re-arrests. However, many addicts and other chronic drug offenders do in fact desire to get clean and lead legitimate lives, but it is impossible to accomplish this without a proper support system or while living on the streets. That is why I believe it is essential to shift the criminal justice system’s focus from a punitive one to a rehabilitative one, in cases in which there is a clear problem that must be addressed (e.g., homelessness, addiction, unemployment, mental health). This literature review utilizes both qualitative and quantitative studies with evidence to support the following claim: More lenient sentences for low-level drug crimes, combined with wider utilization of rehabilitation-oriented programs (e.g., drug counseling, job training, education, and treatment for addicts), will produce a drop in recidivism numbers. In addition, it will save money, and improve the overall quality of life of ex-offenders and addicts. The qualitative studies in this literature review make cogent arguments to the unjustness of drug crime sentencing, and provide insight into the benefits of rehabilitative-focused methods. The quantitative studies in this review also find benefits in rehabilitative-focused drug court and prison educational/job-training participation. These benefits are not only represented in reductions of future criminal behavior, but also improvements in other socioeconomic factors
The Unholy Trinity: Racism, Capitalism and Mass Incarceration
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Mattermovement grew into one of the largest social justice movements inU.S. history; and as protests against police brutality increased, itseemed as though instances of police brutality also increased. Inthe years since, more people have become keenly aware of theissues affecting Black and brown communities. But this newfoundawareness only brings a buried history to light.
 
Letter from Dr. Brown
It is with great delight that I write this note introducing theinaugural issue of the journal, The Annual Review of CriminalJustice Studies (ARCJS). While the department has expressed adesire for a student-run journal for several years, it took theenterprising spirit of our newest tenure-track faculty member, Dr.Albert de la Tierra, or Professor Lobo as his students call him, forthis project to come to fruition. Without Professor Lobo inspiringhis students or applying his many gifts in this area, this journalwould have taken much longer to happen. Thank you, ProfessorLobo, for this gift to the department, our students, and to allinterested in current topics in Criminal Justice Studies.
Professor Lobo’s inspiration is infectious, demonstrated byhis ability to get three of our best and brightest students in thedepartment to serve as the inaugural editorial board. ClaudiaLomeli-Rodriguez, Grace Ann Cowherd, and Serena RaquelGomez serve as the editorial committee and have set the bar highfor the quality and caliber of the journal in its very first go-around.Together, these remarkable students have compiled a compellingand exciting first issue that traverses the wide range of topics thatinterest our students. And their editorial expertise is already ondisplay, through the selection of the articles, the arrangement of theissue, and most importantly, through the compelling topics andideas that are presented herein
U.S. Courts Adopt White Supremacist Values
The historical past of the United States of America is one thatremains present, however, specifically for the African Americancommunity, because many of the hardships and disparities theydeal with are inescapable. Precisely within our criminal justicesystem, Black Americans are constantly left at a disadvantagebased on the design of our country centuries ago which wasfounded on a white supremacist hierarchy. This paper will provideevidence using scholarly articles which are comprised of casestudies that prove and elaborate on these injustices, and how therole of white supremacy still stands today. Qualitative researchshows that there is a strong correlation between the history of slavepatrols and the over-policing that many low income communitiesof color experience today. Peer-reviewed articles in this researchpaper also employ qualitative research that examines howneglecting Black Americans of a fair trial through jurydiscrimination and unequal sentencing, is a considerable factor inmass incarceration. The aftereffects of being incarcerated will alsobe a major focus. Utilizing theories from scholarly research, thispaper exposes America’s white supremacy state, and how it hasdisproportionately affects the Black community. An attention tothis matter is crucial in bettering our communities of color for amore equitable lifestyle

Coding to Connect: Centering Joy and Community in Elementary Computer Science Education
In this piece, we weave together personal reflections to explore the design and implementation of an unplugged, elementary computer science (CS) event, and examine the underlying pedagogical principles guiding this work. Critical CS scholars have increasingly called for centering joy and connection within CS, while simultaneously decentering the neoliberal focus on workforce development. We aimed to forefront these ideas with a CS event supported and led by a multi-stakeholder partnership between preservice teachers, staff, and faculty within California State University, Dominguez Hills’ College of Education, and the students, inservice teachers, and administration at 186th St. Elementary School. Historically, CS is an inequitable and inaccessible field that does not prioritize diversity or inclusion. By bringing together numerous stakeholders from across the community for a CS event centering joy, we hoped to shift perceptions and experiences of CS and find better ways of supporting and inspiring all our students and teachers.
