How the Plea Bargain Affects Our Criminal Justice System

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the plea bargain system and the effects it has on minorities. It highlights the process of a plea deal, explains violations of amendments, and makes a connection between economic and political disparities. The criminal justice system targets Latinos and African Americans due to their background and the environment they live in. They constantly experience over-policing, racial profiling, poverty, and a lack of resources. Many are falsely accused and are forced to take plea deals by prosecutors. Throughout my research, I discovered a positive correlation between mass incarceration and plea bargaining. It can cause mental and physical violence. Understanding incarcerated individuals\u27 stories and their experiences will help reform the criminal justice system. &nbsp

The Decline of the Welfare State and the Rise of the Police State

The Reagan Administration’s defunding of the American welfare state would end two decades of Black socio-economic growth and lead to decades of oppression and mass incarceration. Using dog-whistle coded messaging to drive white Southerners to vote, Reagan effectively demolished a system that benefitted many Black Americans. The defunding of welfare programs directly led to an increase in wealth inequality between White and Black Americans not seen since the end of segregation. The Reagan Administration created the opportunity for future policymakers to incarcerate minority and poor communities in a disproportionate amount. This initial deterioration of the welfare state led directly to the modern issue of mass incarceration and wealth inequality we see today

    Get PDF
The pandemic was a challenging time for everyone. In order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, many schools around the world were forced to close. To continue to meet the educational needs of students, educators transitioned instruction to distance learning. This abrupt shift may have had adverse effects on students with disabilities and the teachers who work with them. Thus, the purpose of this manuscript is to provide special education teachers an opportunity to share their pandemic related teaching experiences

"I Just Have to Do What I Can": "Mobile Suit Gundam 0079" and the Burdens of War

The implications of the Asia-Pacific War persisted throughout the 20th century. Since 1945, Japan found itself in an endless conflict between various approaches at remembering the war and had to deal with the ways that these memories pervade public life. The 1970s saw a resurgence of pro-nationalist media, specifically in animation. As an entertainment medium, animation has proven itself to be a popular and receptive outlet for both creative and political expression. In 1979, Tomino Yoshiyuki\u27s Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 first aired in Japan, which launched the Mobile Suit Gundam series. Gundam\u27s historiography consists of analyses of the cinematic remakes of Mobile Suit Gundam 0079, close examinations of later entries, and a thematic approach of the entire series. This paper builds upon the argument that Gundam is a critique of war, and that Tomino specifically criticizes Imperial Japan\u27s policies in the Asia-Pacific War, unlike industry contemporaries. By analyzing selections from the original Mobile Suit Gundam 0079 television series, focusing on major and minor side characters, and connecting this analysis with the experiences of Japanese soldiers during the war, Tomino makes his views apparent to the audience. A conversation between Gundam 0079\u27s protagonist\u27s father and a soldier that would later become an important part of the show and an examination of the main cast of teenage characters as they begin their journey, reveal Tomino\u27s opinions towards the use of child soldiers, a "filler" episode of a rogue soldier protecting a group of defenseless children he previously traumatized illustrates the power of war guilt, and a brief  profiling of a major character in the show touches upon the agony of involuntarily participating in war

Early exposure to STEM research as a foundational experience for STEM careers

    No full text
The benefits of undergraduate research to student persistence and success has been established in the literature. Less studied, however, is the long term impact of early exposure to research among students from underserved backgrounds. This qualitative study of undergraduates participating in a unique summer research program uncovers the deeper meaning of the overall experience on the students: from the lab itself, to the mentors, peers, professional development, socials, and the impact of the program staff. Three major themes emerged: (1) Early exposure to research as a foundation for career direction; (2) Relationships with peers and mentors as highly valued; and (3) Development of skills leads to personal and professional growth, and confidence. Additionally, underrepresented students described the value of having minority role models and peers, and the excitement of continuing their research throughout their undergraduate careers. A full compensation package of stipend and housing made a practical difference for several of the participants. This qualitative study offers a deeper understanding of these impacts through the voices of the participants.&nbsp
