Amor traicionero. La reescritura de dos heroínas, Juana la Loca y Malintzin
This essay focuses on the rewriting of the historical narrative regarding two women: Joan the Mad and Malintzin, by two female authors from a feminist perspective. Gioconda Belli and Laura Esquivel suppress the traditional vision which has marked their protagonists utilizing the concept of historiographic metafiction by Linda Hutcheon. History, which for the most part, has been written by men, found these protagonists lacking or unworthy. From the authors’ points of view, these women have transcendental value. For this reason, the authors deemed to rewrite the historical narratives from the perspectives of the heroines themselves in an effort to allow the women to speak for themselves and regain the merit lost to them. The authors demonstrate that history is not complete without all the voices and versions.
Comparative Analysis of Microbial Functional Diversity Between Rhizosphere and Bulk Soil Across Three Ecological Zones: Lowland, Riparian, and Sedge Habitats
The functional diversity of microbial communities plays a crucial role in nutrient cycling and ecosystem dynamics in wetlands. In this study, we investigated the microbial communities in the rhizosphere (soil zone adjacent to plant roots) and bulk soil of three wetland vegetation types: sedge (J. acutus), riparian, and lowland (Typha-dominated). Random samples were collected from eight bulk soil and five rhizosphere sites per vegetation type. DNA extraction, shotgun library preparation, next-generation sequencing, functional profiling using funprofiler, canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), beta diversity analysis, and chemical/physical analysis were conducted. Our results revealed significant differences in functional diversity between bulk soil and rhizosphere (P-value = 0.01 vs. 0.32), suggesting distinct microbial communities associated with root systems, possibly influenced by vegetation type. The riparian vegetation exhibited the most dispersed functional diversity, likely attributed to its diverse plant species. Interestingly, the lowland bulk soil displayed greater functional diversity compared to its rhizosphere, while the rhizosphere showed less dispersed functional diversity, possibly due to the uniformity of vegetation in this area. These findings enhance our understanding of wetland microbial ecosystems, highlighting the influence of vegetation type and soil properties on microbial functional diversity
Role-ing The Dice: Identity, Intimacy & Consent in Table-Top Role Playing
Tabletop roleplaying games are not new hobbies but have a distinct contemporary affiliation with pop culture. Many shows and podcasts feature popular TTRPG Dungeons and Dragons, among various additional games. These games have the powerful potential to examine identity, identity formation, and many personal issues through roleplaying potential. Collective storytelling and character development are cornerstones of this process. With this potential, it is important to realize the potential for negative experiences and tabletop spaces that could potentially cause more harm than good for players. This article examines the connections between TTRPGs and the intimacy process. Mainly exploring how intimacy tools such as the “button,” boundary practice, and consent-based world-building can significantly impact the game experience. As a result, I discuss how these processes additionally benefit the individual player. Ultimately, I argue that TTRPGs are strengthened through engagement with the intimacy process
Participation as Intimate Act: Audience Reflections on Strategies of Consent in Roll Models
Immersive, interactive, and participatory performances often promise co-creative or otherwise unique roles for spectators, who may be called upon to directly interact with performers, explore performance sites, or help shape plot. The nature of much of this heightened participation is important to note: audience members might be expected to be visible onstage, make choices that affect the show, offer personal information, or engage directly with actors, in an ask for labor that is resultantly accompanied by increased risk, vulnerability, and relationality. This article uses the case study of Roll Models, a longform improv show that enacts a short adventure campaign in the style of Dungeons & Dragons on stage, in order to characterize audience participation as an intimate act. Building on previous scholarship aimed at assessing consent, intimacy, and participation in immersive theatre and live action role-play (Villarreal 2021, Biggin 2017, Machon 2013), we query not only into what participation, consent, and on-boarding processes were present in the performance, but also how audience members themselves viewed such mechanisms, understood and learned their role in the performance, and related to actors and each other
Integration of inquiry-based experiences department-wide: an example from biology curriculum: Radically embedding a high-impact practice for equity and access.
Inquiry-based course experiences provide a scalable and equitable way to engage students in research. In this study, we describe how we introduced inquiry-based experiences to ten lower-division and upper-division courses across the biology curriculum at a regionally comprehensive public university serving the diverse population in a major metropolitan area. Student survey data suggest this redesign effectively developed students’ scientific skills and nurtured their sense of belonging. This project illustrates how inquiry-based experiences can be implemented sustainably across institutional context
Balancing Act: Integrating Broad and Narrow Constructs of Experiential Learning in Higher Education
This paper explores the dualistic nature of experiential learning (EL) definitions in higher education, advocating for a balanced integration of broad and narrow constructs. Through case study and collaborative inquiry, diverse disciplinary perspectives—from engineering to performing arts and urban education—are examined to understand EL\u27s application and impact. The paper highlights the importance of accommodating both overarching frameworks for universal applicability and specific definitions for disciplinary depth. It proposes that broad definitions enhance inclusivity and adaptability, while narrow constructs ensure targeted learning experiences and skill development. The findings suggest that EL is a versatile pedagogical tool. It is adaptable to varied academic landscapes and yet maintains its essence of active, reflective engagement with the world. Finally, the paper argues that both the broad and narrow definitions are necessary to ensure EL remains a transformative educational pedagogy
Managing Alone: Single Parenthood and Silver Linings in the Time of COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has taken the world by storm. It has been a hundred years since a pandemic of this scale – of devastation and interference – has struck the global community with expansive social, economic, political, and cultural ramifications. Despite the medical and technological advancements of our time, the COVID-19 pandemic has immobilized modern society in unprecedented ways. There was no viable cure when it first struck, healthcare systems were on the brink of exhaustion, death toll skyrocketed, widespread closures amassed, and supply-chain scarcities marked the first months of the pandemic. We are still grappling with the implications of this moment in history.
My study focuses on the implications of the pandemic on single parents, arguably an understudied demographic group. My findings, based on 5 in-depth interviews with single parents suggest that the pandemic has been a double-edged sword – on the one hand, it has pushed single parents to the brink as they juggled rigorous parenting duties while shouldering work responsibilities. Yet, surprisingly on the other hand, single parents also found priceless moments of time that brought forth joy in those uninterrupted moments spent together with their children. The government’s assistance schemes (e.g., expanding EBT, rent moratorium, hot school packed lunches) that were put into effect in the first months of the pandemic sustained them through the worst forms of precarity
Film Review: Breaking Barriers: A Critical Examination of Transgender Representation in Media through Disclosure
Directed by Sam Feder, Disclosure (2020) is a groundbreaking documentary on Netflix that provides a comprehensive sociological analysis of the symbolic annihilation of transgender individuals in film and television. Symbolic annihilation refers to the underrepresentation or misrepresentation of a particular group in media, reinforcing stereotypes and limiting the visibility of that group. Through a combination of historical context, critical analysis, and personal narratives, the film sheds light on the harmful and inaccurate representations of transgender people in mainstream media, as well as the broader societal implications of these portrayals

De Eso No Se Habla
Why is sex such a taboo subject for Latinos? Factors like religion, machismo, and purity culture all play a role in our lack of correct sex education. The long term effects of colonization and patriarchal values have enforced rigid gender roles and regulations on what is culturally acceptable and what is not.
