Impacts of Fire and Post-Fire management on Nitrification and enzymatic activity of Beta-glucosidase and Peroxidase in Chaparral soils
Fire is a natural disturbance that shapes Southern California chaparral ecosystem. Climate change has increased fire intensity and frequency. This research fills potential gaps in understanding the effects of hydroseeded and naturally recovering soils after fire disturbance on microbial activity and abundance. Nitrification is known to increase in burned soils but effects on enzymatic activity is poorly known. β-glucosidase catalyzes the break down of cellulose into glucose. Peroxidase catalyzes the break down of lignin. Nitrification is the conversion of NH4+ into NO3- by nitrifying bacteria. Research sites consisted of unburned (U) and burned, naturally regenerating (N) and hydroseeded (H), sites at CSUSM. Topsoil (0-10 cm) was collected in February 2019 from 24 randomly located plots (n = 8 plots/site). Soil was analyzed for nitrification and β-glucosidase and peroxidase activity. Genomic DNA was extracted using ZymoBIOMICSTM DNA Microprep Kit. 16s rRNA V3-V4 regions were targeted and analyzed using 16S Library Preparation Workflow. Genomic data was analyzed through Galaxy pipeline. The unburned site had significantly higher nitrification than the natural and hydroseeded sites. There was little difference in b-glucosidase activity between the burned and hydroseeded sites. The unburned site had a significantly higher peroxidase activity than the hydroseeded site. The unburned site had a significantl higher nitrifier abundance than the natural and hydroseeded site. Nitrification, β-glucosidase, and peroxidase activity were positively correlated with DNA abundance. Peroxidase activity was negatively correlated with soil pH. Nitrification rates positively correlated with soil moisture. The burned-naturally regenerating and unburned sites contained the same percentage of nitrifying bacteria. The burned-naturally regenerating site contained a narrow low-range of nitrification. The burned-hydroseeded sites contained a wide medium-range of nitrification. The unburned site contained the widest highest- range of nitrification
Colectivo LasTesis: Cuerpo, calle y movilidad
This article focuses on the feminist performance of the LasTesis Collective and its famous: “A rapist in your path.” The objective is to discover the connections and above all the composite assemblage between performance with feminist influence, the body as a performative tool and public space as the ideal place to make visible the denunciation and awareness of gender violence. In this way, performance, body and street become a combination of elements that seeks to confront the State. Artivists (artist-activists) adapt these performative acts to address social problems such as violence against women and feminicide. With a vision in mind, LasTesis gives a defined purpose to their performance, incorporating the feminist anthem: “A rapist in your path” with the intention of giving women a platform to overcome fear and denounce acts of gender violence.
Gabriela Mistral positioned herself as part of the construction of the nation through her narration and role as a teacher, proposing a social system that included female prototypes. This article explores the fragmentation and negotiation of Latin American female archetypes in the life and literature of Mistral. The author investigates and explores traditional gender roles to question the role of women in society. Her literature favors and contributes to the construction of feminine aesthetics and corporality in the Latin American national discourse by incorporating the Marianist, peculiar, and new woman prototypes. Her essayistic work from the first decades of the 20th century that she calls “recados,” her poetic work from the “Vida” section of Desolación (1922) and “Locas mujeres” by Lagar (1938) expose ambiguous female archetypes focusing on the intellectual woman, teacher, mother, peasant, worker and artist. Her narrative mythologizes motherhood as a mandatory characteristic of women; however, she promotes the feminine intellect as a path to emancipation.
Tools of the Trade: Reflections on Modesty Garments & Barriers
Modesty garments and barriers are some of the tools used by intimacy professionals in scenes of physical intimacy. This equipment is, in my opinion, still the unspoken hero that helps me do my job, that gives performers a better sense of protection and a tool that supports and enhances consent based practices.
In the following paper, I will look at modesty garments and barriers I currently use in my practice. I will chart my own journey, discuss the development of INTIMASK, give examples of current vocabulary I use, and share a checklist. Get ready, this paper is long and I take full responsibility for that.
Writings about modesty garments and barriers are extremely scarce in books, academic research and many articles discuss them on a superficial level. And so it was difficult for me to edit sections and cut corners from the information I felt was needed. [...] This paper is written with some progression that makes sense to me and yet, I do think each section can also stand on its own. So please journey through it at your own pace and choosing
