Deciphering the Defining Features of Experiential Learning : A mix of personal experience and sustained scholarship suggests a new framing.

    No full text
This paper addresses the call for submissions to provide greater clarity on the defining features of experiential learning. This definition is accomplished with a critical review of literature relevant to experiential learning and reflection on the findings of a mixed method investigation exploring the defining features, canonical works, and theoretical foundations of experiential education occurring in natural settings. Postulations on experiential learning can be organized by foundational literature (ranging from Plato to Dewey) and definitional literature (formation of professional societies, research, & definitions). The sequential qual, qual mixed method study, which gained the perspectives of experiential education experts and practitioners, found the knowledge base to be broad and eclectic. Furthermore, personal experience was found to be valued as a primary source of knowledge and understanding of experiential learning. The following defining features were extracted from this investigation: personal experience, existential engagement, agency, fluid affordances, flexible pedagogy, empirical and conceptual ways of knowing, freedom, and precision. In addition to these new insights on experiential education, this study offers a research methodology that may be useful for gaining greater clarification about how experiential learning occurs within higher education settings and implemented more equitably

    Ethiopian Jewish Migrants into Israel

    Get PDF
With the influx of Jewish migrants into Israel from all over the world, Israel has become a settler society for persons of Jewish origin. According to the PEW Research Center, as of 2010, 3 million Jewish migrants have ended up in Israel. Additionally, in 2021, The Jewish Agency for Israel helped 28,601 Jewish immigrants enter Israel, marking a 31% increase compared to 2020. Through a sociological perspective on religious migration and identity, this paper intends to discuss the Ethiopian Jewish migration processes into Israel. According to the Migration Data Portal, Israel is a top country for Ethiopian migrant destinations, with 78,000 Ethiopian immigrants in 2020. By analyzing how religion and identity can motivate migration, this paper intends to discuss the structures that facilitate Ethiopian Jewish migration into Israel. Previous research has shown that heterogeneity within the country of origin has influenced Ethiopian migration. Also, with limited microdata analysis involving individual Ethiopian demographic characteristics, large-scale data shows migration trends for Ethiopian migrants. More so, research has shown there is growing religious intolerance that Ethiopian Jewish migrants have endured in their country of origin and how cultural differences have created challenges for Ethiopian Jewish migrants in Israel. Lastly, the population in the movement defines themselves both in the sending and receiving country as Ethiopian Jewish migrants. The Ethiopian Jewish identity is shaped by religious and racial intolerance both in the sending and receiving countries. Finally, this paper aims to explore the motivations and challenges of Ethiopian Jewish migration to Israel as it is essential to understand historical and contemporary issues surrounding departure, transit, and arrival conditions for Ethiopian Jewish migration into Israel. Recommendations to improve conditions and human rights can be inferred

The Use of Solitary Confinement and Its Effect On Mental Health

    Get PDF
The US has a substantial inmate population and uses solitary confinement as a disciplinary measure. However, it can be highly damaging to an inmate\u27s physical and psychological health, especially if they are a member of a vulnerable population or protected class. Correctional officers can misuse solitary confinement for power and control, especially among inmates who are of a racial minority, female, LGBTQ+ or have a history of mental illness. The disparity between how racial minority inmates are treated versus their counterparts creates significant distrust and tension between them and correctional officers. For instance, African-American and Latino men are more likely to receive conduct infractions and be sent to solitary than White inmates. This can result in more incidents between correctional officers and the affected inmates, creating hostility, aggression, and a more significant power imbalance. The criminal justice and corrections system needs to be reformed so that rehabilitation and treatment are a function of it, rather than abuse of power and the consistent mistreatment of inmates while in solitary confinement.&nbsp

The Examining Counter-Colonial Criminology’s Impact on the Israel-Hamas War: An Analysis of Crimes Against Humanity and International Humanitarian Law

    No full text
This research paper delves into the Israel-Hamas conflict, employing a Counter-Colonial framework to examine the historical nuances and the relationship between the current conflict in Israel and Palestine. On October 7th, 2023, Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel. Not only murdering civilians but also sexually assaulting women. In response to the gruesome attack, Israel launched a series of indiscriminate bombardments and attacks on both Hamas militants and an unprecedented amount of civilians. The surprise attack and therefore the apparent failure of the IDF’s highly praised intelligence systems, have shaken the world up to its core. The primary objective of this paper is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of these events through the lens of international humanitarian - and war law. This offers a structured legal framework for evaluating the actions and responsibilities of both Hamas and Israel. Theoretical foundations of counter-colonial criminology echo the historical injustices that have shaped the trajectory of this conflict. Counter-colonial criminology seeks to understand how colonial legacies, power structures, and historical injustices shape the dynamics of crime, justice, law, and social control. The interplay encompassing history, geopolitical dynamics, diplomacy, and humanitarian imperatives underscores the multifaceted nature of the Israel-Hamas War and the global response. This paper presents a comprehensive understanding, of the dynamically evolving reality, the international legal perspective, and the role played by international institutions in elucidating the unfolding events in Israel and Palestine

Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions of AI in Education

    Get PDF
This study explores the integration of generative AI tools into multiple-subject and single-subject teaching credential courses at California State University Sacramento during the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters. The study involved 210 teacher candidates per semester, most of whom had no prior experience with AI in education. Through a series of AI-focused assignments and a survey, the study investigated preservice teachers\u27 perceptions, experiences, and concerns regarding the use of AI tools in educational settings. The assignments aimed to introduce AI tools, encourage experimentation, and facilitate discussions on the potential benefits and challenges of AI in education. The survey results revealed that a significant majority of participants (88.9%) used generative AI tools for personal learning or teaching preparation, with 92% using text generators like ChatGPT. However, opinions were mixed regarding the adoption of AI in future classrooms, with 49% in favor, 41.2% uncertain, and 9.8% opposed. Key concerns included overreliance on technology and ethical issues. The study concludes that while preservice teachers show enthusiasm for experimenting with AI tools and acknowledge their potential to enhance learning experiences, there is a need for ongoing training and support to ensure ethical and effective implementation. The findings suggest that incorporating AI assignments into the curriculum can provide valuable experiences and prepare preservice teachers for the growing role of AI in education
