NACCS Familia, Knowledge & Activismo: Contemplations from a Past Chair

    No full text
In April of 2022, the words of our Chair, Roberto D. Hernández called ustogether to “remember, recall, honor, and embrace—warts and all—themayrespective elders and scholars of [our] particular geographies... whose effortsover the past 50 year have allowed each of[our]campuses to have space fromwhich[we]do the work that matters.”1And so we gathered, to remember and recall, and to do the work. We engaged multiple opportunities to reflect on thedeep roots of our interdiscipline, and to celebrate the critical ways in which thefield continues to evolve and diversify, while striving to create a more justsociety, and to open the doors ofthe university to new generations of Chicanxscholars. We strove, as we continue to strive, to build on a rich legacy, where 1972 stands out as a critical watershed, emerging amid what we now know as the Chicano Movemen

Self and Mixed Delta-Moves on Algebraically Split Links

    Get PDF
A delta-move is a local move on a link diagram. The delta-Gordian distance between links measures the minimum number of delta-moves needed to move between link diagrams. A self delta-move only involves a single component of a link whereas a mixed delta-move involves multiple (2 or 3) components. We prove that two links are mixed delta-equivalent precisely when they have the same pairwise linking number; we also give a number of results on how (mixed/self) delta-moves relate to classical link invariants including the Arf invariant and crossing number. This allows us to produce a graph showing links related by a self delta-move for algebraically split links with up to 9-crossings. For these links we also introduce and calculate the delta-splitting number and mixed delta-splitting number, that is, the minimum number of delta-moves needed to separate the components of the link

Fixed-Term Decompositions Using Even-Indexed Fibonacci Numbers

    Get PDF
As a variant of Zeckendorf\u27s theorem, Chung and Graham proved that every positive integer can be uniquely decomposed into a sum of even-indexed Fibonacci numbers, whose coefficients are either 0, 1, or 2 so that between two coefficients 2, there must be a coefficient 0. This paper characterizes all positive integers that do not have F2k (k ≥ 1) in their decompositions. This continues the work of Kimberling, Carlitz et al., Dekking, and Griffiths, to name a few, who studied such a characterization for Zeckendorf decomposition

A Compendium of Motzkin-Like Path Generating Functions

    Get PDF
We catalog fifteen types of Motzkin-like paths with various restrictions and use the symbolic method to determine their generating functions, several of which are new. We also introduce a new type of Motzkin path corresponding to a walk on a circle, rather than on a line

Beyond the Nile’s Banks: Why the Fight Over the Nile Is About More Than Water: An exploration of resource scarcity, regional power struggles, and the historical grievances fueling the Nile Basin Dispute.

    No full text
This essay explores resource scarcity, regional power struggles, and historical grievances fueling the Nile Basin Dispute. The Nile — the world’s longest river — is an indispensable water source for several African nations, including Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan. It has also been a source of their conflicts and interstate (and intrastate) wars for over a century (Palios, 2019). The struggle for water between these countries is recognized internationally as a significant cause of recent armed conflicts. Exacerbating the situation are the ancient religious and mythological beliefs attached to the river (Milicich, 2019). The conflict intensified in 1821, rooted in competing claims to the Nile’s waters. Power struggles stemmed from each country’s entitlement to the river’s water. Each country’s need to control the river’s flow and resources led to an invasion of Sudan and, in 1875, to Egypt\u27s occupation of Ethiopia. Thereafter, the Anglo-Egyptian War broke out, which instigated the British colonization of Egypt (Acquafredda, 2021). British rule persisted until 1952
