ORATIO ANNIVERSARIA HARVEIANA – ИСТОРИЧЕСКА ТРАДИЦИЯ, ИЗТЪКНАТИ ОРАТОРИ И ТЕМИ НА РЕЧИТЕ
Оratio Harveiana was established in 1656 by William Harvey, who donated his estate to the Royal College of physicians with these legacy words: “once every year there shall be given an oration in Latin publicly in the said College, wherein shall be a commemoration of all the Benefactors … by name ... with an exhortation to the Fellows and Members to search and study out the secrets of Nature by way of experiment.”. The aim of present article is to trace the historical tradition from 1656 to present days by highlighting the problems for the continuity of the orations, the nomination of the orators and the publication and accessibility of the texts. Some of the most famous orators are presented in a summary. The orations, delivered in Latin until 1864, are compared with the later orations in English, regarding the formulas used to address the auditorium and the discussed topics. The conclusion discusses the significance of the Latin texts produced by physicians and scientists as an important source for the history of medicine.

The choice of the concept space blindness is dictated by the fact that it is an essential building block in both the physical and the mythical-religious world of man. The object of the study are the characteristics of the concept blindness as a source of metaphors in the Bulgarian language. One of the goals of the study is the level of verbalization of abstract concepts structured through the space blindness, to investigate the mediating role of metaphor in the interaction between ideal reality and material reality and to determine the place of metaphorical conceptualization in the linguistic consciousness of native speakers of the Bulgarian language. Another goal is at the level of being manifestations of the blindness of identifying the basic semantic features that characterize the types of connections between the source-space and target-spaces. The task is to investigate the behavioural motivation of metaphors related to blindness. The methods and procedures of analysis within the framework of the cognitive approach the relationship is traced between concrete/abstract meaning – lexical form – bodily/cultural experience. The specifics of using these metaphors as a means of knowing the reality and as a tool for organizing the human experience are determined

STUDENTS PARTICIPATION ON RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES
Introduction: Students participation in research and development processes is an activity, which is currently being put in the spotlight at the MU Varna. Going through the selection of a topic, review of the available literature, selection of appropriate research methods, conducting the study, analysis and interpretation of the results, formulating conclusions about them are not just stages of the research process. For them, these are an opportunity: to learn something new; explore the problem in depth, learn about different points of view, make a critical selection from alternatives, select and apply different research methods, analyze data, formulate conclusions based on evidence. In other words, for students, participation in research is a multi-effect activity. Aim: To study the readiness, attitudes and motivation of students to participate in research activities.Materials and methods: A survey was conducted among students from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th univesity year of the "Midwife" specialty, MU - Varna (119) through an anonymous survey in May 2023. Applied methods - documentary, sociological, statistical and graphic processing of the results. Results and discussion: A little more than 1/3 of the surveyed students participated in research activities (34%). 40.3% say they are ready to participate, and about 1/5 hesitate (23.4%). The majority of respondents believe that it is necessary for students to participate in research activities (88.7%). Preferred forms of participation are scientific session for students (72.6%), working meeting (38.7%), student competition (30.6%), round table (18.5%). Obstacles to a more massive inclusion, according to students, are lack of time (41.9%) and lack of motivation (34.7%). Proposals for students to stimulate their participation in research activities: issuing a certificate, award, exemption from an exam, scholarship, monetary incentive. Conclusions: Only 1/3 of the students from the "Midwife" specialty of MU-Varna were involved in research activities, regardless of being convinced of the need for such participation. Almost half of the students feel prepared to participate in research and state their intentions to get involved in the future. A major obstacle to greater student activity is lack of time and insufficient motivation, which can be overcome through individual work and incentives
EFFECTS OF PROBIOTICS ON WOMEN'S HEALTH
Introduction and Aim: Probiotics are digestive tract microorganisms that are beneficial to the health of their host when taken in adequate amounts. Microbiota is defined as a community of microorganisms found in a particular ecological place or environment. In this study, it was aimed to examine the effects of probiotics on women's health.Material and methods: The potential benefits of probiotics have been a subject of intense study in recent years, especially due to the regulatory role they play on the gastro-intestinal and genito-urinary commensal flora. In this study, studies examining the effects of probiotics on women's health were evaluated. Results and discussion: It has been determined that the use of probiotics is effective in preventing the negative consequences of pregnancy complications. Moreover; There are many studies showing that it is effective in improving glycemic control as well as reducing the risk of developing gestational diabetes. Probiotics are also thought to have an important role in obesity management. In the literature, it is stated that it has a protective role in preeclampsia, vaginal infections and allergic diseases. It is also supported by studies that its use in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome is beneficial and may be effective in preventing the development of cervical cancer. Conclusion: Probiotics have an important place on women's health. In order to protect and improve women's health, the level of knowledge of health professionals on the use of probiotics should be increased
METAPHOR’S PARTAKE IN MEDICAL DISCOURSE
In the present article, we examine the concept of metaphor from a diachronic point of view, beginning with Aristotle’s four types of metaphors and ending with the Conceptual Metaphor Theory. As part of an extended research on medical metaphors, the paper explores Ricœur’s and Derrida’s ideas on metaphor. We espouse the idea that metaphor is all–permeating, and side with Lakoff and Johnson in seeing it is an integral characteristic of human thought. In addition, we accept the two roles of metaphor in science as defined by Ortega y Gasset. Before exploring the nature of medical metaphor, we offer a working definition of discourse and medical discourse in particular. We suggest a new way of looking at medical metaphors, inspired by Ricœur’s understanding of metaphor as a discourse phenomenon. We conclude that viewing metaphor as not being noun–bond in the Aristotelean tradition, but rather – as pertaining to the level of discourse does not negate the stipulations of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory; rather, it augments and further particularizes them in relation to the study of metaphor in medical discourse.
Analysis of the degree of jaw bone atrophy by 2D imaging for the purposes of prosthetic treatment in edentulous patients
Introduction: The facial and jaw changes that occur in completely edentulous patients require a precise analysis and evaluation in three planes due to the complex and volumetric structure of the human head. The greater the atrophy of the edentulous jaw, the more pronounced the soft tissue features become. Planning the treatment for such patients requires restoring facial aesthetics and the function of the masticatory apparatus.Aim: The aim of this study is to analyze the vertical bone loss in edentulous upper and lower jaws for the purposes of prosthetic rehabilitation, using 2D imaging measurements.Materials and Methods: A total of 36 panoramic radiographs of edentulous patients were examined. Radiographic criteria for selection included the absence of obvious facial asymmetry, clearly visible anatomical structures, and no history of surgery or fractures. Measurements were made using reference lines drawn through anatomical landmarks on standardized panoramic radiographs. Each panoramic radiograph was processed with the Romexis® Viewer 4.6.2.R (Planmeca) software. After calibrating the software, the respective reference lines were determined, and measurements were taken. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS v. 20.0 software for Windows. The following analyses were used: comparative analysis; correlation analysis—Pearson’s coefficient; graphical and tabular methods for visualizing the results. A significance level of p < 0.05 was adopted with a 95% confidence interval. Results: From the obtained results, no significant difference was observed in the height of the alveolar bone between men and women in both jaws (p < 0.05). A moderate inverse relationship was observed between age and the height of the alveolar bone in the molar region of the lower jaw (p = 0.01, r = -0.423)—the height of the alveolar bone decreases with advancing age. The exceptions are the premolar areas on the left and right, where a decrease in the height of the alveolar ridge is not recorded (r = 0.40).Conclusion: The atrophy of the alveolar bone and the establishment of anatomical landmarks on the prosthetic field using panoramic radiography have crucial diagnostic importance in planning functionally suitable dentures. In the present study, the height of the alveolar bone in completely edentulous patients was measured. A statistically insignificant difference was determined between the heights of the upper and lower jaws concerning the gender of the subjects. Only in the premolar region of the lower jaw in women was a greater height observed.Regarding the distribution by age groups - in the range of 81–90 years, the greatest atrophy of the alveolar ridges was recorded. An inverse relationship was identified between the age indicators and the height of the alveolar bone—as one indicator increased, the other decreased
Current aspects of the effect of biofeedback training on food intake and development of diabetes mellitus: A mini review
Introduction: Heart rate variability training is gaining attention for its potential to influence emotional management and eating behaviors. With obesity and emotional eating recognized as contributors to the onset of diabetes mellitus, exploring interventions such as heart rate variability training holds promise for addressing these interconnected health concerns.Aim: Through a detailed examination of diverse publications, the paper aims to reveal the relationship between heart rate variability training, emotional eating patterns, and decreasing the risk factors for developing diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: In order to find the most recent information on human clinical trials conducted in the past ten years (2013–2023) using representative keywords, the team conducted a comprehensive search of the most accurate scientific web databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. In this review, the authors have focused on the role of heart rate variability training on food intake and the development of diabetes mellitus. Results: According to the research that is currently available, emotional eating is linked to overeating, obesity, and bad eating habits. Emotional eating also appears to be associated with an uptick in depression symptoms. Heart rate variability training has a significant impact on emotional regulation. Hence, working on improving the patient's mood and reducing the symptoms of depression might lower overeating and stabilize blood glucose levels. Conclusion: The implications of this research are significant, as they contribute to understanding non-pharmacological interventions in diabetes mellitus management and prevention, providing a potential new perspective on lifestyle modifications
