    SWOT Analysis of the Activity Related to the Specialty of Dental Technician

    INTRODUCTION: With a long history in medicine, the profession of dental technician is evolving in response to the constantly changing demands of dentists, patients, and the healthcare system. Dental care, as part of general healthcare, is adapting to the growing needs of society, particularly with the demographic changes and aging population in Europe and worldwide, to meet health needs and improve patients' quality of life. As essential members of the dental team, dental technicians play a significant role in patient health and treatment.AIM: The aim of the present article is to perform a SWOT analysis of the activities related to the dental technician specialty.MATERIALS AND METHODS: To achieve this aim, documents and literary sources in Bulgarian were studied. Information was also retrieved from databases such as ResearchGate, Medline, PubMed, Google Scholar, eLibrary.ru, and Scopus.RESULTS: In the reviewed literature, no data was found regarding the SWOT analysis of activities in this specialty. The factor weight of specific components was evaluated. Strengths outweighed weaknesses, and the identified opportunities outnumbered threats. The total value of components identified as strengths and opportunities is greater than that of weaknesses and threats.CONCLUSION: The SWOT analysis presented in this article suggests an effective use of the components to develop and improve the specialty, making it both successful for specialists and beneficial for patients in the delivery of necessary dental healthcare

    Diagnostic Challenges of Left Ventricular Pseudoaneurysm after Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Case Report

    Background: Left ventricular pseudoaneurysm (LVP) is a rare, life-threatening complication following acute myocardial infarction (AMI), characterized by a high risk of rupture and mortality. Distinguishing LVP from true ventricular aneurysms is critical for patient management. Pseudoaneurysms occur when a myocardial wall rupture is contained by the pericardium or scar tissue without involving myocardial tissue, affecting only a portion of the wall thickness. Such occurrences are notably less common than cardiac ruptures post-AMI, with a prevalence below 0.5%.Case Presentation: We report the case of a 43-year-old male presenting with chest pain, dyspnea, dizziness, and episodes of arrhythmia, with symptoms persisting for approximately ten days. The patient exhibited a negative T wave on electrocardiography and elevated D-dimer levels. Despite a negative computed tomography pulmonary angiography for pulmonary embolism, an unexpected basal posterolateral wall outpouching of the left ventricle with a narrow neck and relatively wide apex was discovered. Furthermore, an apical 2-chamber transthoracic echocardiography revealed a defect in the LV basal wall, communicating with a secondary cavity on the posterolateral border and mild mitral regurgitation. A chest radiograph showed focal bulging of the left ventricular border.Diagnosis: These findings led to the diagnosis of an incomplete rupture of the left ventricle, resulting in a pseudoaneurysm. Urgent surgical intervention was undertaken.Conclusion: This case underscores the importance of considering LVP in patients with atypical presentations post-AMI. Precise diagnostic imaging is paramount in identifying this rare condition to prompt urgent surgical repair

    Enteric nervous system – a historical review and contemporary aspects

    The Enteric Nervous System (ENS) was described over a century ago and has since sparked controversy in scientific circles and the periodical press. Over time, knowledge about the structure, functions, and clinical significance of the ENS has evolved. The present work traces historically the emergence of the idea of the ENS, the chronology of the discovery of its structural elements and their functions, with an emphasis on its clinical significance. While not exhaustive, the overview explores the concept of interaction among diverse ENS structures and their role in regulating motility, secretion, hemodynamics, fluid and electrolyte balance, and the integrated functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. The paper also discusses some of the diseases associated with ENS dysfunction

    Anatomical variations in facies articularis calcanea on the talus in the Bulgarian population

    The talus (talus) is a tarsal bone that supports the tibia and rests on the tarsus. On the lower surface of the talus, three articular surfaces are found: anterior, middle, and posterior, through which it is connected to the calcaneus and for which anatomical variations have been described. According to the Modified Boyan Classification, several types of variations are described: types A, B, and C (5). When three separate, fully demarcated articular surfaces are observed, the bone is designated as type A. The distance between the anterior and middle is used for further typing, with A1 being ≤2 mm, A2 being 2 to 5 mm, and A3 being ≥5 mm. In the presence of only two articular surfaces, the talus is defined as type B. In B1 and B2, there is a fusion between the anterior and middle facets, respectively incomplete and complete, and in B3, the middle surface is fused with the posterior one. In cases where there is only one articular surface on the lower side of the talus, it is classified as type C.In this study, 111 pieces of talus from the bone collection of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the Medical University of Varna were evaluated. The percentage distribution of the studied bones according to variations in facies articularis calcanea was: 89.20% for type B2; 5.40% for type B1; 4.50% for type A1; and 0.90% for type A2. No bones with one continuous articular surface (type C) were found, as were those with a distance between the anterior and middle facies articularis calcanea greater than 5 mm

    One area where artificial intelligence (AI) has gained significant ground is education, revolutionizing traditional teaching and learning methods in educational institutions. The integration of AI in education has led to remarkable changes, ranging from increased efficiency and global learning opportunities to personalized educational experiences and smarter content delivery. Aim: The aim of this scientific study is to analyze the opinions of students from the Medical University of Varna regarding the application of artificial intelligence as an educational tool. Materials and Methods: Documentary analysis of available literature and a direct anonymous survey conducted from February to April 2024. Results and Conclusions: The scientific study outlines the opinions of students from the Medical University of Varna on the application of artificial intelligence in the medical educational environment, highlighting the importance of integrating it into the educational process and its impact on learning motivation.Various aspects and advantages of using artificial intelligence in medical education are presented, including personalized learning, adaptive learning, streamlining administrative processes, and the use of immersive technologies such as augmented and virtual reality. Although students express a high willingness to use artificial intelligence in the educational process and positively assess its advantages, there is also some reservation regarding the replacement of academic lecturers with AI lecturers. This underscores the need for a balanced use of technology and attention to the social and psychological aspects of the educational process. Therefore, to leverage student attitudes effectively, it is important to consider their preferences and needs, as well as to maintain a balance between the use of technology and human interaction in the educational process

    60 Years Medical University Varna. III. Public Recognition For 25 Years Of Contribution To Medical Science, Practice And Education

    This article is the third part of the series "60 years of the Medical University of Varna". The period under review begins in 1977 with the inauguration of the new leadership of the Medical Faculty of Varna, with Dean Prof. Dr Garabed Husebikyan Kaprelyan. From 10.01.1979, the Medical Faculty of Varna was reorganized into a Higher Medical Institute, within the Medical Academy (MA) of Sofia, and prof. Dr Garabed Kaprelian was elected Rector (1979 - 1983). During his terms of office, the construction of a series of new units was completed: the first modern hospital complex in Bulgaria, built specifically for the treatment of mentally ill patients, with five wards and 350 beds, new diagnostic-treatment and hygiene-epidemiological structures, with their own buildings. New laboratories and sectors were opened as well. The joint work between the Varna Мedical Institute and the Varna Primary District Hospital was expanded.An afiliated faculty of the Varna Medical Institute was opened in the town of Tolbukhin (today Dobrich), for the training of medical students from the third to the sixth year, thus increasing the contribution of Varna Medical Institute (VMI) to raising the level of health care in North-Eastern Bulgaria. From 20.VI.1983 to 27.IV.1987 the Rector of VMI was Prof. Dr. Vanko Nachev Vankov. During his term of office the construction of the surgical corpus in Dobrich town was completed which were the structures of the surgical departments of the affiliated faculty, thus increasing the level of surgical care in the Dobrudja region and improving the conditions for students education.On 29.X.1986, the most modern of its time hospital structure of the Varna Medical Institute was officially opened with 733 beds and a training campus, adjacent to the previously built hospital complex for the treatment of mentally ill. This created a powerful treatment and diagnostic complex with 1290 beds and 103 places for short hospital stay. VMI Varna established itself as an authoritative center of medical education, with a decisive impact on the improvement of healthcare in North-Eastern Bulgaria, receiving public recognition for its 25 years contribution to medical science, practice and education
