Pleasure and Politics. Making Youth-Cultural Commitment Visible
Get PDFYouth and politics as well as pleasure and politics are often seen as bad matches. Accordingly, today’s youth is diagnosed as generally indifferent towards politics. We suggest, that politics in youth cultures can only be made visible by looking at it from a different angle: from the perspective of reconcilability between work, politics and pleasure. This article provides and discusses a theoretical framework for the analysis of the connections between them in youth cultural contexts. Increasing medialisation and globalisation make cultural symbols accessible to almost everyone. This results in a “devaluation” of style as a marker of distinction and self-positioning. We argue that this devaluation of style causes a shift of focus onto ostensibly non-stylistic aspects in youth cultures – i.e. onto commitment, work or politics. Youth cultures can therefore be viewed as contexts in which self-professionalisation, self-education and self-socialisation take place. Even though within the field of youth culture research, youth-cultural activities are therefore no longer considered to be merely recreational activities or pastimes, youth cultural participation still means the pleasure of sharing certain cultural activities and, beyond this, the pleasure of resistance. We suggest that understanding the – in some ways unexpected und partly still unexplored – connections young people establish between work, politics and pleasure provides insight into new forms of their political commitment
Civic Education with The Simpsons
Get PDFImpudent, disrespectful and packed with slapstick comedy – this is the most prominent and most controversial cartoon family in TV history: The Simpsons. Critics complain about the decay of manners and the offensive humor of the show. There is considerable potential for civic education in the yellow universe of The Simpsons, however. On the basis of three Simpsons-episodes this article analyzes the depiction of elections and electoral races in a media democracy. This analysis aims at extracting critical positions from the satiric presentation of debates, media events and political rhetoric and connecting them to real campaigns in Germany and the USA. The examples are supposed to illustrate that The Simpsons do provide critical access to understanding campaigns in media societies – despite all satiric exaggeration of real events. Furthermore, the article shows that the series does not only comment critically on almost any event of social relevance, but also, more importantly, how we can make these comments work in civic education
Democratic Citizenship – A Conditioned Apprenticeship. A Call for Destabilisation of Democracy in Education
Get PDFWe live in times when the search for a citizenship education that can transcend national, ethnical and cultural borders is an important part of educational policy. In times of increased pressure by the European Union on its nation states to provide for nation-transcending democracy, this question becomes crucial for national policymaking in Europe. In this text, Swedish education policy will be taken as a case in point in order to shed light on how this question is being handled in this particular national policy setting. It is argued that the policy’s citizen fostering agenda tends to be counterproductive in the sense that it is still situated in national notions of the relationship between democracy and education, which tend to exclude certain individuals and groups of people on an age-related and (ethno) cultural basis. It is further argued that these excluding features can be related to educational ideas about socialisation. The aim of this text is underlined by suggesting a different way of framing democracy and democratic citizenship education: to increase the potential of education as regards the renewal of democracy and democratic citizenship
Social Theory: Who Needs It? A Didactic Substantiation of Social Theories in Lessons

Mostly, they are only taught in extracts, and the analysis of a text extract from a theory is seldom discussed in class. In particular, sociological theories are therefore only presented to the pupils in an abridged form. The didactic-methodical potential of social theories in the process of Conceptual Change – from the everyday theory to science-related theories – about aspects of social changes, the social order, or social actions, remains unused. Nachhaltigkeit und fachdidaktische Herausforderungen

Im Beitrag werden – ohne einen Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit – Forschungszugänge für (Gestaltungs-) Kompetenzen, Curricula, fachdidaktische Konzepte, Lehr-Lern-Arrangements, die Leistungserfassung und die lehrenden Akteure skizziert. Eröffnet werden einige wirtschaftsdidaktische Forschungskorridore, die für eine Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung in der ökonomischen Bildung von Interesse sein könnten. Ausgangspunkt ist die Überlegung, dass die ökonomische Bildung erst durch die Auseinandersetzung mit Nachhaltigkeit ihren Bildungsauftrag erfülltAlthough the discourse about sustainability has intensified over the last few years, this topic still does not get sufficient attention from the point of view of economical didactics. In this article, the writer outlines different research approaches for competences of organization, curricula, concepts of technical didactics, classroom arrangements that involve teaching and learning, the assessment of performances and the learning individuals. This contribution is not exhausting and therefore might be subject to amendments in the future. The writer presents a number of research approaches that seem to be promising for gains within the field of education for sustainable development and vocational education. As a starting point, the writer deems important that economical education can only fulfill its mission goals through an intense discourse about sustainability
Election Media and Youth Political Engagement
Get PDFElection campaigns are regular opportunities for heightened political engagement and socialization. For many young people, politics becomes most visible and concrete during electoral contests. However, campaign media, at least in the United States, typically have not targeted young voters with messages that enhance their participation and turnout. In fact, much traditional election media coverage of youth has emphasized their lack of interest and involvement, and thus works to discourage the development of activist political orientations. With the evolution of new types of dynamic and populist media formats, such as blogs and social/political networking websites, young people have greater opportunities to establish a presence in election campaigns on their own terms. What happens to history and its epistemology when it becomes an audiovisual experience? What are the different visual modes of knowledge production in historiography? Which uses of history become part of popular media culture? Get PDFLargely unnoticed by both sociology and the German educational institutions and their discourse, Bremen has been offering both Advanced Placement and standard level sociology classes in its schools in grades 11 through 13 for the last 30 years. This paper deals mainly with the relevance of the school subject of sociology as seen by about 100 students recruited from five different classes. The students discuss the difference between the school subject sociology and other social sciences related subjects taught in school. Against this background, the emergence, development and formation of the new Bremen curriculum for sociology will be presented, concluding with a tentative inquiry into the “lack of interrelation” between school and universityIn der deutschen Bildungslandschaft und in der Soziologie nahezu nicht wahrgenommen gibt es in Bremen seit 30 Jahren Soziologieleistungs- und -grundkurse in der Gymnasialen Oberstufe. Dieser Aufsatz beschäftigt sich schwerpunktmäßig mit der Bedeutung des Unterrichtsfaches Soziologie aus der Sicht von ca. 100 Schülerinnen und Schülern aus fünf Oberstufenkursen. Die Jugendlichen setzen sich mit dem Unterschied zwischen dem Fach Soziologie und anderen sozialwissenschaftlichen Fächern in der Schule auseinander. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden kurz die Entstehung und die Erarbeitung des neuen Bremer Bildungsplanes Soziologie dargestellt, um am Ende fragend auf die „Beziehungslosigkeit“ zwischen Universität und Schule hinzuweisen
