Get PDFThe education reform implemented by the military regime of Juan Velasco (1968-1975) in Peru was the result of the alliance between a progressive branch of the armed forces and a group of cosmopolitan intellectuals influenced by radical pedagogy from the 60s and 70s, but also loyal to a long progressive tradition in education from Peru and Latin America. Analysis of this truncated project brings to light critical debates about politics and ideology in education and resonates with contemporary discussions about development and post development studies. The contemporary significance of the 1972 education reform is that its legacy, embodied in conspicuous members of the education community, played a role in the application of the neoliberal reforms in education in Peru in the 1990s, and helped envision a consensual educational project for the future
Voices of Women in the Arab Spring

I will be examining the role of women during the Arab Spring by taking a social constructivist position. As well as this I aim to find analyses in Islamic feminist literature which deals with the issue of religion, gender and patriarchy within specific cultural and religious backgrounds. This will be complimented with a community psychological approach by assessing the issues of marginalization, concientization and empowerment presented by the media articles under analysis written by female Arab journalists, bloggers and activists

For this reason, a transformative human rights education framework is useful for considering the roles and processes of citizenship education in Latin America. Using a case study of a programme that teaches about the right to education to disadvantaged youth from the São Paulo periphery, this article also highlights the use of surveys as a Frereian pedagogical tool in transformative human rights and citizenship education
Children In the Garden of Democracy: The Meaning of Civic Engagement in Today’s Egypt
Get PDFThis is the second in a series of reports on the current wave of youth civic engagement in Egypt. Our goal is to offer an on-the-ground account of the unfolding political changes in Egypt from the perspective a small group of young activists from Cairo and Alexandria. Our first report was based on interviews with these youth who described their involvement in the demonstrations of early 2011 that led to the resignation of Hosni Mubarak. We viewed their comments in terms of a social-movement approach to civic engagement. These young people spelled out their grievances against Mubarak’s government, the ideological outlook they shared on political reform, the opportunities that enabled their actions, and the organizational apparatus that made this momentous event possible (Barber & Youniss, 2012).This paper is a reflective analysis of questions that have emerged in our research. We continued to interview these same youth activists over the past year and correlated their evolving views first with our further exploration of Egypt’s complex political situation and second with our knowledge of recent social scientific thought regarding civic engagement among youth. This triangulation leads us to consider three kinds of questions: 1) how to assess civic engagement adequately in a population of youth that lived under politically restrictive conditions; 2) how new definitions of active Egyptian citizenship are emerging; and 3) what these new definitions imply for engagement in the future
