Patent Protection, Intelligence and Economic Growth: A Cross-Country Empirical Investigation
Get PDFExtant literature on the link between patent protection and economic growth have yielded inconclusive results. In this study, we aim to engage in this debate by conjecturing that intelligence moderates the effect of patent protection on economic growth. Using annual data of 88 nations from 1970 to 2013 we find that patent protection has positive effect on growth only after accounting for the interaction between IQ and IPR. Indeed, we find that the interaction term is negative and statistically significant suggesting that countries with higher level of intelligence (above 90 points) can offset the negative effect of weak IPR protection. The results remain robust for a battery of robustness tests.

A Guide for Effective Case Analysis

The pedagogical process of the case approach is also an important aspect, raising such important questions as: In which ways does the case approach benefit the educational experience in a more lasting ways? Why does the case approach from the traditional lecture approach? What is the student involvement in the case approach and its consequent benefit to the critical and creative thing of the student? What are the benefits of decision making of the student when he is cornered in a decision situation? Is it as important to know the right questions to ask as the right answers to arrive? If the case approach is to be really meaningful, why and how important is it for a student to know how to prepare a case before his class session? How does the case method usually keep the students more attentive to the classroom activities than the traditional lecture method? These questions are raised and answered in the article. Case method form of teaching requires, like any other activity, case method teaching experience and skills. Market Power and Collusion on Interconnection Phone Market in Tunisia: What Lessons from International Experiences
No full textWe try in this paper to characterize the state of mobile phone market in Tunisia. Our study is based on a survey of foreign experience (Europe) in detecting collusive behavior and a comparison of the critical threshold of collusion between operators in developing countries like Tunisia. The market power is estimated based on the work of Parker Roller (1997) and the assumption of "Balanced Calling Pattern". We use then the model of Friedman (1971) to compare the critical threshold of collusion. We show that the “conduct parameter” measuring the intensity of competition is not null during the period 1993-2011. Results show also that collusion is easier on the Tunisian market that on the Algerian, Jordanian, or Moroccan one
Does Organizational Structure influence IT investment and its effects on Operational Capability?
Get PDFThe effects of IT (Information Technology) have been examined extensively through various theoretical foundations and distinct disciplines. Most of these studies suggest that IS (Information Systems) plays a critical role in operational activities and performance, whereas IT facilitates a firm’s capability to deal with large amounts of information within and between organizations. It has been widely believed that IT enables an organization to improve its information capability, which in turn, enhances its operational efficiency and effectiveness. Prior research has assessed the effects of IT on operational performance. In order to provide an overview of how IT effects improve operational performance, we reviewed prior studies within the field of operations management including organizational factors such as organizational structure (centralization vs. decentralization) and business process. However, few studies have focused on the role of organizational structure in the relationship between IT investment and operational performance. Since organizational structure has been recognized as one of the key factors affecting operational improvement, this present research seeks to explore how organizational structure influences the relationship of IT investment on operational performance throughout IT capability at the organizational level
Study on Micro Enterprise Growth in Manado, Indonesia
Get PDFMicro enterprises conditions both nationally and regionally very large amount of the total MSMEs, but its contribution to GDP is very low compared to the population is very large. The low contribution of micro-enterprises to GDP describes the condition of the existing micro enterprises are not growing, so the need to do a study to determine the aspects related to growth. Under these conditions, this study aims to know the presence of micro-enterprises in Manado. A sample of 158 respondents consisting of 96 cafe, and 62 grocery, data was analyzed with a descriptive analysis of the frequency tables and cross tables. The findings show that characteristics of respondents who pursue the cafe mostly aged 30 to 39 years old and respondents who pursue the grocery mostly aged 40 to 59 years. Both types are mostly occupied by female, mostly senior high school educated. Characteristic microenterprises studied are mostly already in operation 1 to 5 years, using employees from 1 to 3 people. Enterprises growth from the aspect of sales, and from the aspect of assets also largely increased, but the number of employees did not increase. Another findings are the cafe run mostly female respondents increased sales compared to the run of male respondents. Unlike the grocery, enterprises were managed by male respondents largely increased sales. Based on the age of the enterprises, the cafe which has been operating from 1 to 3 years in general have the highest sales increase and thereafter declined; while the grocery which has been operating 3 to 5 years are generally highest sales increased and afterwards decreased. In terms of asset growth, the respondent cafe increased their assets until the age of 10 years after the age was declining. While respondents grocery increased their assets until the age of 5 years after the age was declining

Economic Crisis and Coping Strategies as Related to Attitude and Teaching Performance of Elementary School Teachers
Get PDFThis study ascertained the relationship between economic crisis and coping strategies as related to attitude and teaching performance of elementary school teachers. The quantitative descriptive method of research was used with attitude and teaching performance as dependent variables, experienced economic crisis as the independent variable, and coping strategy as moderator variable. The participants in the study were the 95 elementary school teachers in Buenavista I, Division of Guimaras, who were selected through stratified proportional sampling. Data were gathered through a researcher-made questionnaire-checklist and Performance Appraisal System for Teachers (PAST). The statistical tools used were frequency count, rank, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson's Product-Moment Coefficient of Correlation (Pearson's r). All statistical computations were availed of through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results revealed that the top economic crises experienced by teachers were limited cash and inability to buy goods, groceries, clothing, and other basic amenities. The topmost coping strategies employed by teachers were: buying only basic foods or things for household, borrowing money from co-teachers and other private persons or entity, making loans from private lending institutions/ persons, or government financial institutions like GSIS, PAG-IBIG, etc. to answer necessary expenses, loaning in advance the bonuses, monthly pay, clothing allowance, etc. and limiting the number of times of shopping, watching movies and malling together with the whole family. The elementary school teachers also experienced economic crisis to a “moderate extent.” The public school teachers had a “positive attitude” towards work despite the experienced economic crisis. Nevertheless, the performance of the teachers was found to be “very satisfactory.” Furthermore, no significant relationships existed between coping strategies and teaching performance, and attitude towards work of elementary school teachers

Get PDFThis study deals with an important and vital subject that focuses on determining the role of market knowledge and Blue Ocean Strategy in achieving competitive advantage, and that is because of the scarcity of management studies in general, and marketing studies in particular, which addressed the nature of the relationship and impact between these three concepts .The study problem was represented by the question: what is the state of the Blue Ocean Strategy in Saudi Arabian organizations, how is it affected by market knowledge and what is its impact on achieving competitive advantage. This study aims to reveal the extent of the realization of the organization under study of market knowledge and Blue Ocean Strategy. It also aims to determine the relationship and impact between market knowledge dimensions and the dimensions of the Blue Ocean Strategy, determining the relationship and impact between the Blue Ocean and the dimensions of the competitive advantage strategy, the relationship and impact between market knowledge dimensions and competitive advantage dimensions and determining the relationship and the indirect impact of market knowledge on achieving competitive advantage through the Blue Ocean Strategy. The study was conducted on employees who occupy supervisory positions in Marketing department of Saudi Telecom Company. The number of valid questionnaires for analysis amounted to (64), which were analyzed using statistical software (SPSS). The study reached several conclusions, including: There is a high degree of acknowledgement among participants in the study about: market knowledge dimension, Blue Ocean Strategy and competitive advantage; there is a relationship and impact between market knowledge dimension and Blue Ocean Strategy dimension; there is a relationship and impact between Blue Ocean Strategy dimension and competitive advantage dimension; there is a relationship and impact between market knowledge dimension and competitive advantage dimension, there is a relationship and an indirect impact of market knowledge on achieving competitive advantage, and that is through the Blue Ocean Strategy
