REDISCOVERY OF CAMELLIA TONKINENSIS (PIT.) COHEN-STUART (THEACEAE) ON MT. BA VI, HANOI, VIETNAM
Camellia specimens were collected from Mt. Ba Vi, Ba Vi National Park, during field surveys in 2022 (flowers) and 2023 (fruit). On the basis of morphological analyses, we determined that the morphology of these specimens matched that of Camellia tonkinensis. The characteristics of the specimens included papery-textured, elliptic or broad elliptic leaves with acuminate to narrowly acuminate apices, obtuse to rounded bases, petioles with channeled adaxial surfaces, tomentose gynoecia, 3(–4)-coccate capsules, and 1(–2) seeds per locule. A comparison of the morphological characteristics of the 2022 and 2023 collections (DL 220901, Dl 230201) was made with the type specimen (B. Balansa 3860, 1887) and the 2014 collections from Ngoc Son-Ngo Luong Nature Reserve (N. Q. Hieu et al. CPC616, CPC673, CPC712, CPC776). The characteristics and photographs of the rediscovered species from Mt. Ba Vi are presented herein. From the latest field surveys, the IUCN conservation status of Camellia tonkinensis was assessed as Critically Endangered (CR)
AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE LEADER-MEMBER EXCHANGE AND QUITTING INTENTION MEDIATED BY JOB SATISFACTION AND ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT: EVIDENCE FROM SELF-FINANCED PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES
This study investigates the effect of leader-member exchange on quitting intention as mediated by job satisfaction and organizational commitment in Vietnamese self-financed public universities. A questionnaire survey based on theory was conducted to obtain data from lecturers at eight self-financed public universities. The data were analyzed with a structural equation model. The model analysis demonstrated a significant linkage between leader-member exchange and quitting intention as mediated by job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Job satisfaction was found to be a significant predictor of high organizational commitment. Thus, the structural equation model results help clarify the mixed findings in the literature on the relationship between leader-member exchange and quitting intention
OTHERWORLDLY LANDSCAPES IN THE HISTORIC TEXT TRUYỀN KỲ MẠN LỤC BY NGUYEN DU
Truyền kỳ mạn lục, the only literary work of the renowned Confucian scholar Nguyen Du, is considered the brilliant peak of Vietnamese supernatural tales. This paper aims to decode a distinctive aspect of the artistic thinking in Truyền kỳ mạn lục and contribute to establishing the applicability of landscape theory in the study of medieval literature. By applying landscape theory and model-setting methods, the paper analyzes and compares the richness and uniqueness of spatial movement types that create otherworldly landscapes as a hallmark of supernatural stories. The paper identifies the methods, nuances, artistic discourse, and construction of models of otherworldly landscapes in 20 stories from the historic text, Truyền kỳ mạn lục, highlighting both the similarities and differences in the artistic thinking of otherworldly landscapes and the unique artistic features in Nguyen Du’s creation of these landscapes. This study promotes Vietnamese literary heritage and contributes to advancing the research and teaching of the genre of East Asian supernatural literature at educational institutions
SOME THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL ISSUES ON THE CONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF URBAN CULTURAL COMMUNITIES IN VIETNAM TODAY
Rapid urbanization is one of the positive results of Vietnam’s current industrial and service economic development. The success of innovative economic development policies has driven strong growth in many urban areas of the country in recent decades. The transition from traditional agrarian rural life to an urban environment will certainly not be without many disruptions and even problems; therefore, Vietnam needs to establish appropriate community cultural model(s) in the urban environment as a guide for the gradual development of urban communities in the coming decades. This article analyzes the theoretical foundations of urban community culture in the contemporary Vietnamese context from the interdisciplinary perspective between cultural studies, urban studies, and other disciplines, draws on the experience of some typical cases in the region and around the world, and proposes a scientific and practical basis for the development of community culture in urban areas in Vietnam. It can be said that building a new urban community culture in Vietnam today requires a multidimensional approach, including two basic perspectives, a constructivist approach and a cognitive approach, to ensure the two main objectives of (1) creating a suitable and effective cultural environment for urban communities and (2) enhancing the sense of responsibility for participating in cultural creation and building an urban cultural flow that protects, inherits traditions, and fully conforms to civilized and modern standards

Buddhism is one of the major religions practiced in Vietnam. The attitude of the Vietnamese toward Buddhism during different periods is therefore an important topic. In this article, we analyze 145 Buddhist epitaphs from the Le and Nguyen dynasties. Our aim is to gain insight into three aspects of the attitude of Confucians toward Buddhism: The extent of Confucian involvement in the creation of Buddhist epitaphs, the level of sympathy expressed toward Buddhism by Confucians, and the expression of Buddhist thought in the spiritual life of the Vietnamese, as revealed by the inscriptions. We thereby aim to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how Buddhism has impacted Vietnamese spirituality.
IN THE DEANS’ SHOES: A QUALITATIVE EXAMINATION OF ISSUES REQUIRING STRATEGIC DECISION-MAKING IN TEACHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS
This qualitative study explores the decision-making processes of deans in teacher education in the Philippines and investigates the challenges they encounter. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in the interpretive paradigm, focusing on the experiences and perspectives of current and former deans. Data were collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and reflective essays, with thematic analysis used for data interpretation. DISTRIBUTION OF MICROPLASTICS IN COASTAL SURFACE WATERS AT BROOKE’S POINT, PALAWAN, PHILIPPINES
Coastal surface water samples obtained from 11 sites at Brooke’s Point, Palawan, were subjected to sieving and visual analysis of microplastics. Microplastics were detected in all samples, with blue fiber-shaped particles being the most abundant. Variations in the mean concentration of microplastics across sample sites were investigated for trends in microplastic distribution. Geographical features, wind patterns, rivers, and the direction of ocean waves were suspected to influence the transport of microplastics. The results provide a call to local governing bodies to formulate policies that address the issue of microplastic contamination and increase environmental awareness among the local population
QUALITY OF SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING AND BANK STABILITY: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM VIETNAMESE COMMERCIAL BANKS
The purpose of this study is twofold. First, we attempt to quantify the quality of bank sustainability reporting (QSR) since the 2016 mandatory sustainability disclosure in Vietnam. Content analysis of banks’ annual reports is performed to assess 11 QSR items that are used to build the QSR index. Second, we investigate whether the quality of sustainability reporting influences banks’ financial stability. Employing a sample of 159 banking firm observations over the period 2016–2021, we document that the quality of sustainability reporting in Vietnamese commercial banks increased from year to year. Importantly, our empirical evidence shows that a higher level of QSR contributes to better bank stability. This result is robust to various estimation methods, different components of QSR, an alternative measure of bank stability, and controlling for reverse causality. Our findings provide important implications for bank managers by highlighting that the enhancement of QSR increases bank stability
THE PRINCIPLES OF BUILDING A PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC STATE ACCORDING TO PRESIDENT HO CHI MINH DURING THE WAR OF RESISTANCE AGAINST FRENCH COLONIALISM (1945–1954)
Over 15 years (1930–1945), under the leadership of the Party, the Vietnamese nation overcame numerous challenges to seize power in the 1945 August Revolution and establish the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. In this article, the author synthesizes and systematizes materials, studies, evaluates, and draws out some fundamental principles that the Party and President Ho Chi Minh applied in the process of building a state of the people, laying the foundation for the long-term revolutionary cause of the Vietnamese people. Vietnam has favorable conditions for comprehensive national development in the context of renewal and deep international integration. However, difficulties and challenges persist, external forces oppose the state-building efforts, and the degeneration and corruption of some officials and Party members have significantly affected the leadership role and credibility of the Party and government. Therefore, understanding the principles in building and organizing the government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam under the direct leadership of President Ho Chi Minh during the First Resistance War (1945–1954) is certainly of practical significance, providing further experience for the construction and organization of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, a state of the people, by the people, and for the people in the current context of national development
CHIẾN LƯỢC DẠY HỌC BƠI VÀ THỦY SINH
Research-based instructional materials, such as course manuals, should be used to optimize the performance of instructors teaching swimming and aquatics. This study used an exploratory research design to explore the teaching strategies and challenges of ten swimming and aquatic course instructors at Bicol University through survey interviews and curriculum analysis. The study revealed that the instructors used various teaching approaches in the course, depending on the topic. Major challenges were poor facilities, overcrowded pools, and a lack of professional development. A course manual covering the eight topics of the course was developed. The manual was evaluated and scored as acceptable for use in teaching the course. It was concluded that the techniques for implementing theory-based learning and the difficulties that educators face may serve as the foundation for the development of successful teaching resources, such as books and manuals. Strong institutional support for providing adequate facilities and professional development for instructors is recommended. Use of the manual developed here is encouraged to evaluate its effectiveness.Để tối đa hóa hiệu suất của người hướng dẫn trong việc dạy bơi và dưới nước, nên sử dụng các tài liệu hướng dẫn dựa trên nghiên cứu như sách hướng dẫn khóa học.
