THE DIVERSITY OF YELLOW CAMELLIAS IN THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS, VIETNAM
The Central Highlands (Tây Nguyên) is a center of yellow camellia diversity in Vietnam and the world. The Central Highlands contains 18 of Vietnam’s yellow camellia species, accounting for 37% of yellow camellia species in Vietnam and 28% of yellow camellia species worldwide. Moreover, all 18 yellow camellia species in the Central Highlands are endemic to Vietnam. The camellias of the Central Highlands belong to nine sections, accounting for 75% of the world. The yellow colors occur in three groups: pale yellow, yellow, and yellow with compound colors. The yellow camellia distribution is dispersed at 500–1600 m elevation in evergreen broadleaf forests and mixed wood-bamboo forests
ANCIENT VIETNAMESE WORDS IN SOUTHERN FOLK SONG COLLECTIONS PUBLISHED IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20th CENTURY
The article examines and explains the meanings of archaic Vietnamese words in southern folk song collections published in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We have identified and selected typical Vietnamese words that are now rarely used or used differently. To explain these words’ meanings in folk songs, we use dictionaries, such as Vietnamese Dictionary, Ancient Vietnamese Vocabulary Dictionary, Đại Nam quốc âm tự vị (Dictionnaire Annamit) – the first Vietnamese dictionary, and Southern Dialect Dictionary. This research outlines a unique and exciting feature of the southern language that was popular in folk songs and people’s lives in the South
CHANGES IN PLASMA LEVELS OF STEROID HORMONES DURING SEXUAL MATURATION OF MALE HELICOPTER CATFISH (WALLAGO ATTU) IN CAPTIVITY
In order to provide reliable indicators of the spawning season of captive helicopter catfish (Wallago attu), this study evaluated the temporal variation in gonadosomatic index (GSI), plasma levels of testosterone (T), and 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) in male broodstock in captivity. GSI was estimated as the percentage of the relative weight of testis to total body weight. Plasma levels of sex steroids were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (EIA). Testis samples were dehydrated and embedded in paraffin, then sectioned at 5 μm thickness. The highest level of T (402.1 ± 16.7 pg/mL) was found in June, followed by a peak in 11-KT level (76.9 ± 4.7 pg/mL) in May. Testes containing the highest concentrations of spermatozoa were observed from June to August. The GSI of males increased significantly from January to June and peaked in July (2.14%). Taken together, we conclude that the spawning season of captive helicopter catfish occurs from June to August. These results will contribute to the basic knowledge of the reproductive biology of helicopter catfish, which can be useful in artificial breeding
ENTREPREURIAL SELF-EFFICACY AND THE LIKELIHOOD OF BEING SELF-EMPLOYED – A COMPARISON OF URBAN AND RURAL AREAS IN VIETNAM
A large body of entrepreneurship research has focused on the relationship between entrepreneurial self-efficacy and start-up activity. Yet, little is known about how the interplay of these mechanisms is moderated by informal institutional conditions (e.g., social traits in rural and urban regions). Particularly, Vietnam, a country with a socialist-oriented market economy, has emerged as one of the world’s most entrepreneurial countries. This study examines how the effects of individuals’ entrepreneurial self-efficacy on being self-employed are contingent on institutional environments (e.g., rural and urban areas). Statistical analyses of 2013 to 2015 data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) project for Vietnam provide empirical evidences that entrepreneurial self-efficacy is significantly and positively associated with being self-employed, and that this effect is more pronounced for individuals in rural than those in urban areas. Moreover, the findings show that people in rural Vietnam are more willing to be self-employed than their peers in urban areas. This difference is explained by the distinct impact of the informal institutional variable, entrepreneurial self-efficacy (e.g., the knowledge, skills, and experience required to start a new business) that individuals living in rural areas may gain from entrepreneurship promotion and start-up programs supported by the Vietnamese leadership. Our findings have implications for national entrepreneurship programs and financial support for start-up projects in rural areas
A TAXONOMIC KEY FOR YELLOW CAMELLIAS IN THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS OF VIETNAM
Eighteen yellow Camellia species are found in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Their morphological characteristics are described and illustrated. Based on the morphological characteristics of the leaves, flowers, and fruit, a dichotomous key has been constructed
THE HEROIC FEMALE CHARACTER IN FAIRY TALES AND EPICS OF SOME ETHNIC MINORITIES IN THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS
The author uses analysis, synthesis, and comparison methods to give readers a comprehensive view of the heroic female character in fairy tales and epics of some ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands. It is an exciting and unique topic since the female hero has not been paid much attention and is rarely mentioned in research papers. Therefore, in this article, the writer has made significant contributions and new findings of the brave female heroes in fairy tales and epics of the Central Highlands. Their talents, wisdom, dignity, and extraordinary health are united. They won battles against sinister villains to protect the peace, prestige, and honor of their villages and themselves when those are violated, which is similar to male heroes. In particular, the heroic female character represents the matriarchy’s authority and the village’s wish for wealth and happiness. Through the image of the heroine, readers will understand more about the regional culture, including customs, habits, lessons about humanity, and beautiful features in the beliefs of ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands
NONLINEAR CHARACTERISTICS OF SQUARE SOLID-CORE PHOTONIC CRYSTAL FIBERS WITH VARIOUS LATTICE PARAMETERS IN THE CLADDING
Nonlinear characteristics of fused silica, solid-core photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with a square array of air holes are studied numerically. We present a novel design that emphasizes the difference in air hole diameters in the photonic cladding. These PCFs have the advantages of flat dispersion, high nonlinearity, and low attenuation. Based on simulation results, three optimal structures, denoted #F1, #F2, and #F3, having anomalous and all-normal dispersions in the near-infrared range are selected to investigate characteristic properties at the pump wavelength. Such PCFs open up many possibilities for nonlinear optical applications, especially supercontinuum generation
SOCIAL NETWORK IN MOTHER GODDESS WORSHIP: A CASE STUDY OF MEDIUM DANG THI MAT, HANG PAGODA-QUAN TAM TEMPLE, THANH MY COMMUNE, SON TAY TOWN, HANOI
Many authors, domestic and foreign, have studied different aspects of Mother Goddess worship. Studying Mother Goddess worship on the basis of social network theory is a modern research trend, and is valuable in determining the complexity of social relationships that people build, maintain, and develop in their real lives as members of society. This article adopts some points of view in social network theory to study a specific social network in Mother Goddess worship, that of medium Dang Thi Mat, of Hang Pagoda-Quan Tam Temple, Thanh My Commune, Son Tay Town, Hanoi to clarify the characteristics, structure, homophily, operating principles, and development of this social network in modern society. The analysis in the article is based on long-term fieldwork (2015-2018), observations, and in-depth interviews with many individuals to obtain objective and tangible research results
GENDER ISSUES TOWARD GENDER-RESPONSIVE TVTED CURRICULUM PRACTICES
Gender mainstreaming in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and the labor market is a goal that is not yet fully achieved. Despite social, political, and economic changes, disparities, discrimination, and bias persist. The lack of gender responsiveness in school-based pedagogy has hindered women’s access, retention, and performance in TVET institutions. While gender imbalances exist in TVET, teachers are often unaware or unwilling to address them, implying that they lack the knowledge to deal with gender issues in practice. Thus, this study was conducted to identify the emerging gender issues that hinder gender responsiveness in technical-vocational teacher education (TVTEd) curriculum practices. The cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT) was used as the theoretical lens to generate and analyze the data. The data were generated from document analysis, interviews, and focus group discussions among teachers, students, and graduates. Having gender-responsive curriculum practice as the object of the study, findings revealed that subjects (teachers) create the main contradictions in emerging gender issues. These are characterized by gender biases, stereotyping that hinders women’s progress in technical-vocational fields, and stereotypes in resources, content, and language. The subject was followed by the contradiction within the rules, tools, community, and division of labor. The study recommends interventions to hone gender responsiveness and thereby mainstream gender in TVTEd curriculum practices. Policy-practice gaps should also be studied and gender-related research in TVET and technical-vocational teacher education should be initiated and funded
KÄHLER DIFFERENTIAL MODULES AND CONFIGURATIONS OF POINTS IN
Given a finite set of points in the projective plane, we use the module of Kähler differentials to investigate the configurations of these points. More precisely, depending on the values of the Hilbert function of the module of Kähler differential 3-forms, we determine whether the set of points lies on a nonsingular conic, on two different lines, or on a single line.
