    Universal design for learning and multimedia supports the inclusion of diverse learners with digital learning tools

    When I began teaching, the learning design was a “one size fits all” model. Today’s classroom of diverse learners requires a different model of learning design. It has become essential to allow students to use the media of their choice with the structured guidance of the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework so they can better communicate and express their understanding of curricular competencies. My literature review reveals that a curriculum imbued with educational media can allow alternatives to using specific learning tools that let learners better articulate what they know. The study and implementation of educational media are critical because it has become the norm for 21st-century learning and can provide an equal opportunity for everyone to learn. The amount of screen time is essential so the students do not experience adverse health effects. The implications are that students learn differently when they are allowed to read, watch, or listen to information multiple times. I advocate that students have access to media tools to support their learning. I notice that students in my classroom are more engaged and feel more successful when they have a choice of multimedia to learn and work with.     Supporting a playful pedagogical approach in early childhood education

    This paper explores the significance and application of playful learning experiences with the intention of making a positive influence towards changing the trajectory of society’s inherently traditional educational delivery model. Early-childhood programs have been recognized as an integral and essential component of a child’s education. Through my experiences as an educational leader in early childhood education, I have witnessed the positive impact of facilitating developmentally appropriate learning experiences that are both child-centered and playful. Educators have the ability to experience joy and the resulting rewards of facilitating playful experiences with students. Play-based education is a powerful method of curriculum delivery as the children are receiving an enriched and more meaningful experience; it is impactful and integral to encompass throughout a child’s entire educational experience as it allows for a child to be actively engaged in their learning. Experiencing joy, for both the educator and the student, can significantly reduce feelings of stress. Playful learning experiences foster accessible entry points to learning that address the varied needs of all learners. Teachers should appreciate and understand how to create authentic playful learning experiences for their students for the purpose of enhancing student learning.Fostering playful learning experiences can apply to all educational levels, however,this paper will specifically focus on the application of playful learning within early childhood educational contexts.     As an educator, I have witnessed firsthand how drama and oral language have been brushed aside in public classrooms as teachers place understandable priority on the core subjects and skills of reading, writing, and mathematics. This awareness has inspired me to further explore how theatre can positively affect a child’s development and literary education. Using theatrical elements in literacy lessons will enhance students’ success in reading and writing because it adheres to all types of learners; supports a positive learning environment; and complements and supports all aspects of language development. Teaching professionals are constantly attempting to find different ways to reach their students and support their literacy development and through the implementation of theatrical exercises and lessons, teachers can promote positive, engaging classrooms that meet the needs of all students. Learning to read and write is crucial in a child’s development of critical thinking, exploration, and expression of self. Not being able to access, learn or develop these skills can spark frustration and behavioural issues within students.     One of the driving force that pushes a normal cell towards a cancerous state is led by unregulated control of its cellular division through the suppression of tumour suppressor genes and over expression of oncogenes. These cancer-driver genes have been associated in the advancement of different cancer types, though how they are represented and with which genes they are associated within the cancer’s gene expression profiles is a boon towards understanding of said cancer’s development. An novel way of modelling these gene expression profiles is to use graphlet-based network analysis, a data mining technique that allows for identification, understanding, and prediction of their functionality, emergent properties, and potential controllability.     My practice is built around a series of gestures toward the land where I live and careful observation of the responses that follow. The work is site-specific in a rural location on treaty 8 territory – specifically, Beaver, Cree, Métis and Dene territory. Each gesture begins as a kind of mimetic echo of phenomena that I observe. I try to embody moments on the land as a way of learning from these moments and acknowledging their significance. These gestures sometimes take the form of simple sculptures made with materials found in the forest, different forms of writing on and with the land, as well as lens-based work that includes my shadow as both haunter and hauntee. My influences include artist Peter von Tiesenhausen, author Nan Shepherd, Blackfoot researcher and educator Leroy Little Bear, and most importantly, the many entities that I encounter in this part of the world. The responses that come from the land and other entities are the most significant aspect of my work, and I am presenting only the residue of these encounters through my documentation and sculptures. I am devoted to exploring various experiences of time and how they overlap, as well as how this relates to political, historical and ecological concerns.     Disentangling the mechanisms of plumage color evolution in tyrannid flycatchers

    In birds, plumage coloration is an important visual signal involved in communication and survival that varies greatly across species. Plumage colour evolution is influenced by a variety of factors including phylogeny, predation pressure, sexual selection, light and resource availability, and ecological context. Tyrant flycatchers are an interesting group because although there are many monomorphic species with drab plumage, some species are quite colourful. Given the complexity of factors involved, the mechanisms influencing plumage colour evolution in Tyrant flycatchers are likely complex, involving multiple drivers. To account for the fact that differences in the availability of resources and light will result in differences in the acquisition and transmission of plumage signals, we calculated red and blue chromaticity values from red, blue, green scores originally extracted from digitally scanned images from the Birds of the World. Next, we used phylogenetically controlled analyses to assess the influence of a variety of ecological factors on plumage colouration, and dichromatism. Finally, we examined the extent of range overlap among species to test if plumage varies to a greater extent in overlapping species due to reinforcement of pre-mating isolating mechanisms (i.e., for species recognition). We found that diet, precipitation, and temperature all influence colour expression, that precipitation and latitude influence the extent of dichromatism, and finally that the extent of range overlap affects plumage divergence between species. Taken together, our results highlight the complexity of plumage evolution in Tyrant flycatchers and demonstrate that the evolution of plumage colouration is driven by a combination of ecological, geographic, and biological factors.evolutionspecies recognitioncolourationbirdsornitholog
