    Exploring the lived experiences of providing pediatric palliative care on registered nurses working outside of children’s hospitals

    Pediatric palliative care (PPC) is a unique component of palliative care. While palliation is an integral part of adult nursing, the palliation of a child is uncommon. Some research has been published on the effects of providing PPC on nurses, patients, and families. There is an evidence gap on the effects of providing PPC on nurses working outside of children’s hospitals. This qualitative descriptive phenomenological study within a humanistic nursing theory context focused on identifying the personal effects of providing PPC on nurses working with the pediatric population in the Interior of British Columbia. Data collection included a semi-structured in-depth interview with 14 participants. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify four themes to describe participants stories of education, experience, debriefing, and resilience. Each theme contained several subthemes.     Daoist Humility: How Ancient Chinese Wisdom and Modern Psychology Are Telling Us to Be Natural by Going Against the Flow

    This paper develops a Daoist account of the virtue of humility in light of psychological research. Warry of self-deprecation, contemporary psychology has redefined humility as accurate self-perception combined with other-focus, but provides little explanation as to how these “twin dimensions” coincide and produce humble behavior. The Daodejing (5-3rd centuries BCE) provides a helpful perspective on humility. Any effort or ambition pushed too far becomes counterproductive. By embracing lowliness and identifying with socially-undesirable conditions, we subvert self-destructive vanity. Psychological studies over the past century tellingly suggest that the human mind only has limited capacities for cognitive control, and that prescribing symptoms—ironically intending the very outcomes we usually avoid—is often more productive than trying to control them.     Forensic genetic genealogy: A profile of cases solved

    This research undertakes a systematic review of cases cleared using forensic genetic genealogy (FGG) and has produced a dataset and annotated bibliography that can be used for further research. Data was collected to better understand the impact of FGG on a number of metrics relating to substantive, procedural, and distributive justice. FGG has been used primarily to clear cases involving serial and sexual violence against female and vulnerable victims, and in cases involving stranger victimization – cases that have traditionally been more difficult to clear. About 80% of victims were targeted for sexual violence, and about 28% belonged to social groups that are particularly vulnerable to criminal and sexual exploitation. About 79% of suspects and 48% of victims were of European ancestry, although the ancestry of many victims was unknown as they are victims of sexual assault. In the U.S., FGG investigations were primarily conducted in lower-income U.S. counties and were overrepresented in rural areas while being underused in the 50 largest metropolitan areas. The ten largest police departments in the U.S. cleared only 2% of cases and identified 5 suspects. The average time for FGG to clear a case was found to be 12.1 months. The rights of defendants to a fair trial are best secured when cases are cleared quickly and brought to trial in a timely fashion. Many of these cases had been open for many years: this allowed offenders to victimize others, while also leading to higher incidences of wrongful convictions, prosecutions, and innocent suspects being investigated by police. Rates of prior wrongful conviction in the dataset ranged from 2.8% of all crimes, to 3.7% of all homicides. Rates of wrongful prosecutions ranged from 10.1% of all crimes, to 16.5% of all rape-murders. Two persons have been exonerated as a result of an FGG investigation. FGG is advancing the aims of justice in several important ways and should be made more widely available, especially for victims who have been less well-served by the criminal justice system.     Rethinking Indigenous policing on reservation lands in Canada: Reflections from Australia and the United States

    The historical relationship between the Indigenous Peoples of Canada and the federal government is strained as they have been subjected to continuous and ongoing injustices. To address various issues associated with Indigenous Peoples and the justice system, First Nations Policing Programs were introduced. Extensive research has been conducted evaluating Canada's Indigenous policing practices; however, there are gaps in the literature pertaining to best practices and what can be improved. This research aims to highlight the strengths and shortcomings of Canada's FNPP and Indigenous policing practices while reflecting on the Indigenous policing practices observed in Australia and the United States in an effort to determine the best and actionable practices that can be implemented in Canada. Through a descriptive analysis of purposively selected literature, this research suggests that Indigenous policing in Canada can be enhanced by redefining its services, implementing community patrols similar to what is employed in Australian Indigenous communities, and securing adequate funding. Additionally, further research evaluating Indigenous policing in Australia and the United States is necessary

    Carbon and Nutrient Stoichiometric Relationships in the Soil–Plant Systems of Disturbed Boreal Forest Peatlands within Athabasca Oil Sands Region, Canada

    Peatlands store carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P), and the stoichiometric relationship among them may be modified by ecosystem disturbances, with major implications for boreal peatland ecosystem functions. To understand the potential impact of landscape fragmentation on peatland nutrient stoichiometry, we characterize the stoichiometric ratios of C, N and P in the soil–plant systems of disturbed boreal forest peatlands and also assessed relationships among site conditions, nutrient availability, stoichiometric ratios (C:N:P) and C storage in four sites that represent the forms of disturbed peatlands in the Athabasca oil sands region. Our results showed that nutrient stoichiometric balance differed across and within these peatlands, among plants, peat, and groundwater. Ratios of C:N and C:P in peat is a function of nutrient and moisture conditions, increasing from nutrient-rich (C:N = 28; C:P = 86) to nutrient-poor fens (C:N = 82; C:P = 1061), and were lower in moist hollows relative to drier hummock microforms. In groundwater, the drier nutrient-rich fen had higher N:P ratios relative to the nutrient-poor fen, reflecting interactions between dominant hydrologic conditions and stoichiometric relationships. The N:P ratio of plants was more similar to those of peat than groundwater pools, especially in the most recently disturbed nutrient-poor fen, where plant C:N:P ratios were greater compared to older disturbed sites in the region. These findings suggest that disturbances that modify moisture and nutrient regimes could potentially upset the C:N:P stoichiometric balance of boreal forest peatlands. It also provides valuable insights and essential baseline data to inform our understanding of how peatland C:N:P stoichiometry would respond to disturbance and restoration interventions in a boreal forest region at the tipping point of environmental change.articl
