Expression of risk genes linked to vitamin D receptor super-enhancer regions and their association with phenotype severity in multiple sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic debilitating neurological condition with a wide range of phenotype variability. A complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors contributes to disease onset and progression in MS patients. Vitamin D deficiency is a known susceptibility factor for MS, however the underlying mechanism of vitamin D-gene interactions in MS etiology is still poorly understood. Vitamin D receptor super-enhancers (VSEs) are enriched in MS risk variants and may modulate these environment-gene interactions. mRNA expression in total of 64 patients with contrasting MS severity was quantified in select genes. First, RNA-seq was performed on a discovery cohort (10 mild, 10 severe MS phenotype) and ten genes regulated by VSEs that have been linked to MS risk were analyzed. Four candidates showed a significant positive association (GRINA, PLEC, PARP10, and LRG1) in the discovery cohort and were then quantified using digital droplet PCR (ddPCR) in a validation cohort (33 mild, 11 severe MS phenotype). A significant differential expression persisted in the validation cohort for three of the VSE-MS genes: GRINA (p = 0.0138), LRG1 (p = 0.0157), and PLEC (p = 0.0391). In summary, genes regulated by VSE regions that contain known MS risk variants were shown to have differential expression based on disease severity (p<0.05). The findings implicate a role for vitamin D super-enhancers in modulating disease activity. In addition, expression levels may have some utility as prognostic biomarkers in the future.Peer reviewedarticl
Paramedics connecting through applied research (Paramedics CARe) conference Canada 2021
The Justice Institute of British Columbia convened its first annual Paramedics Connecting Through Applied Research (Paramedics CARe) between May 27 2021 and June 11 2021 over four morning sessions held online. The conference was co-sponsored by the CSA Group, the Justice Institute of British Columbia, and the University of Waterloo through a Connections grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The aim of the Paramedics CARe is to mobilise knowledge on the latest research in Canadian paramedicine and foster intersectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration between academic researchers, educators, provincial and municipal governments, private small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that support paramedic practice, and the public through patient advocacy groups. Supporting Student-Led Open Pedagogy
While there are numerous positive opportunities offered to students through open pedagogical practices (OEP), it is also important to acknowledge and address student concerns when it comes to OEP.
Open Pedagogy is intended to be student-led, with students (supported by instructors) creating Open Educational Resources (OER) that can be shared online with an open license allowing for future adaptations.
Research shows that in the process of Open Pedagogy, students have concerns about the public sharing of self-created materials. These concerns can stem from their own levels of confidence with subject matter, the perceived accuracy of information they create, and the public sharing of their work. Instructors who collaboratively facilitate Open Pedagogy projects with students can openly address these concerns.

Developing the guidelines for the digital transformation process based on the actor modeling framework
Many companies use information systems to support their operations, but to properly utilize IS, organizations must go through a Digital Transformation (DT) process. One of the strategic assets needed to begin or accelerate the DT journey is Dynamic Capabilities (DC). Despite the progress that DT has achieved in understanding the contributions of individuals to the construction and maintenance of DC, there have been requests to engage more deeply with the nature of the work performed by actors who support these capabilities. Therefore, we focus on the
actors' roles in DC and use the Actor Modeling Framework to connect actors to DC. Then we developed a guideline by using a design-science approach to connect different parts of DT, and its application was tested in Prince George, Red Deer, and Grande Prairie EDOs. The guideline is like a clear map showing EDO organizations where they need to go to implement DT
Investigation of microbubbles and nanobubbles gas flotation for oil separation from marine oily wastewater using response surface methodology
Oily wastewater caused by marine oil spills brings great harm to the environment. In this work, the application of gas flotation with microbubbles and nanobubbles in separating crude oil droplets from oily wastewater is reported. The experiments were conducted in a flotation column with an internal diameter of 5.2 cm and a height of 100 cm. Response surface methodology was employed to examine the effects of three experimental factors (initial oil concentration, flotation time, and temperature of inlet wastewater) on the oil separation performance and the interaction between experimental factors. A good agreement was obtained between the predicted and experimental data of oil separation efficiency, with a high R2 of 0.99 and an adjusted R2 of 0.98. The optimization results demonstrate that the maximum oil separation efficiency (98.3%) was achieved under optimum experimental conditions of 524.5 mg/L initial oil concentration, 28.6 min flotation time, and 21.2°C inlet wastewater temperature
