Through the Eyes of a Dog — A children’s book aimed at promoting equity, inclusion and identity
The purpose of this research project is to create an educational tool in the form of a children’s book. My aim is to spark discussions regarding equity, inclusion, and identity for children ages four to six-year-old. This research project proposal is divided into six chapters. Chapter One introduces the framework for the proposed case study. Chapter Two provides a literature review, exploring the relationships between bibliotherapy, animals and people. Chapter Three provides a description of the qualitative methodology and description of the method process. Chapter Four outlines the findings and evaluation of the case study. Chapter Five describes the proposed children’s book manuscript and future aspirations for Through the Eyes of a Dog. Chapter Six presents the lessons learned and recommendations based on the research journey

Resting Cardiovascular Function and its Association with Athletic Performance Measures in Female Soccer Players
This project looked at heart rate variability (cardiovascular assessment of the nervous system) scores and compared them to countermovement jump (muscular system assessment of nervous system) scores. The goal of the project was to show that these two variables could help determine what type of work you could put an athlete through based on these scores. HRV is the amount of time between each heart beat, typically we look at heart rate in beats per minute. But our heart doesn't beat like a metronome, there is variability between each beat. This variability can be measured using a heart rate monitor and determine if we are in a rest and digest state, or the fight or flight state. So it is measuring our stress level. If we get a high HRV score it means we are rested, which would be an ideal state for an athlete to train hard. If we are stressed, we get a low score, which means the athlete needs to rest or adjust training to have a lighter load
Testing intensive cattle grazing management as a restoration tool in invaded, semi-arid grasslands
Overgrazing and invasive species pose significant threats to the livelihood of British Columbia (B.C.) ranchers. Spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe), in particular, can reduce native plant diversity, form dense monocultures and overwhelm the native seed bank. Integrated land management strategies are therefore needed to suppress weeds and restore ecological function as a whole. Recent research suggests that short-duration, light to moderate grazing may aid in restoring grasslands. My primary research objective was to test management-intensive grazing (MiG), extensive grazing, and targeted cattle grazing for their effects on: a) plant community structure and productivity, b) soil chemical and physical properties, and c) the storage of soil carbon in a semi-arid grassland. A secondary objective was to determine the efficacy of targeted cattle grazing to suppress C. stoebe seed production. Electric fence enclosures were established in C. stoebe dominated grassland in Merritt, BC. Cattle numbers and timing were controlled such that MiG was ten cow/calf pairs for one day at the end of the summer growing season, extensive was one cow/calf pair for ten days at the end of the summer growing season and targeted was ten cow/calf pairs for one day at the height of spotted knapweed flowering. Results demonstrated that MiG improved native grass cover and productivity,but total productivity, diversity indices or soil properties did not differ from extensive grazing.Targeted cattle grazing was effective in controlling C. stoebe seed production; cattle readily consumed C. stoebe at the late bud-flowering stage and reduced the number of mature seeds by 88% and seed heads by 79%. At the point of targeted grazing, C. stoebe also contained more crude protein and total digestible nutrients than the grass community. This research helped demonstrate that intensive grazing practices have the potential to create productive invasive-free grasslands in B.C.’s southern interior and beyond. The study aimed to document access to menstrual products and student experiences with menstruation on campus. As a first zine author and artist Rebecca Johnson hopes that spill it. will illuminate what it's like to menstruate on campus, and inspire others to share their story. The research was reviewed and approved by the Douglas College Research Ethics Board and data was collected between October 2019 - July 2020
Development of an integrated system dynamics estimation and scenario-based decision-making framework for offshore oil spill waste management
Managing the waste generated after response operations is the most challenging part of an offshore oil spill. A waste estimation is required before deciding on the transportation, treatment, and disposal of each type of oil spill waste. So, firstly, this thesis developed a system dynamics model to estimate the quantity of each type of oily waste generated after oil spill response operations, considering different aspects (e.g., weather conditions, the spilled oil volume and characteristics, response time and equipment). The results of the model for an actual oil spill in BC, Canada (2016), as the case study, showed a 86% average accuracy. Sensitivity analysis of the case study illustrated that a five-hour decrease in the response arrival time could increase the oil recovery by 26%. Moreover, sensitivity analysis showed a possibility of 45% overuse of sorbents for the case study. Response surface methodology (RSM) also was conducted, and the significant interaction effects between sea temperature and response arrival time on recovered oil and between sorbent boom weight and sorbent booms usage rate on solid waste were demonstrated. In addition to the oil spill response waste (OSRW) quantity estimation model, the study developed a scenariobased decision-making framework as the second objective to provide the most monetary beneficial strategies to deal with each collected OSRW under different scenarios of impact factors (e.g., waste quantity, waste quality, location, capacity, and availability of treatment and disposal facilities). An optimization model with an objective of minimizing net costs was developed to evaluate all scenarios using hypothetical and actual data. Results were categorized to develop the decisionmaking framework. It was illustrated that oil processing is the best option for managing liquid oily waste from spilled refined oil. For liquid oily waste from crude spilled oil, the oil refinery is the best option if the quantity is above a defined limit in this study. For solid oily waste management, pyrolysis is the most appropriate destination. The optimum solutions and sensitivity analysis for the actual data of a case study validated the results
