There are hundreds of different varieties of cannabis and correctly identifying them has a great significance for both medical and social purposes but distinguishing them based on morphological traits alone can be challenging. An efficient DNA barcoding method is needed and thus the goal of the project is to develop efficient and reliable DNA markers for the identification of Cannabis varieties

    Assessing recovery capital: Changes to internal and external resources during residential treatment

    Early recovery from drug addiction is synonymous with strides in growth and self-awareness. One construct, recovery capital, attempts to identify changes by assessing strengths and resources available to initiate and sustain abstinence. This research sought to investigate how recovery capital changes over the course of a residential treatment. The researchers anticipate that due to the biopsychosocial nature of treatment an increase in capital will occur. Our sample consisted of residents (n = 38) at an adult men’s treatment center for alcohol and drug addiction. This study utilized a repeated measures design wherein the Assessment of Recovery Capital (ARC) was administered at two different points of a participant’s treatment. The results suggest there was a statistically significant difference between the two assessments [t (25) = 7.10, p < .001, d = 1.39]. This study concluded a residential treatment stay benefits building and maintaining recovery capital. Further research is required to investigate how recovery capital changes post-treatment and how best it can be used to support individuals through the early stages of recovery.     An Investigation Into The Development, Application, And Relevance Of The Infanticide Legislation in Canadian Law

    The application and development of infanticide legislation in the Canadian justice system is a controversial topic among the legal community. Section 233 of the Criminal Code (1985) contains the infanticide provision in Canadian statute law. Section 233 Infanticide can be used both as a stand-alone charge, and as a partial defence in cases where murder is charged. This thesis provides a brief historical overview of the infanticide provision’s legislative development. Since its enactment in 1948, the provision has undergone some revisions but has received little commentary from the courts. There is considerable confusion in the legal community surrounding some phrases in the provision and their legal meaning. Some argue the relevance of the provision in the context of modern Canadian society. In addition, this thesis discusses the various legal issues that have arisen from its application as well as the changes that have been made to the legislation as a result of prominent cases

    An Exploration of How Rape Myth Acceptance Affects Sexual Assault Trials in Canada

    Rape myth acceptance continues to make its way into our criminal justice system. It is expressed in sexual assault trials during cross-examinations of complainants and in a judge or jury’s decision-making processes. Prejudices and biases about sexual assault and its victims infiltrates societal views about the offence and people involved; thus, affecting reporting and conviction rates. This project illustrates how rape myths are used and accepted by justice professionals during trials and how it affects sexual assault case outcomes. This is showed with landmark cases where myths were the backbone of the decision-making process in deciding the offender’s guilt for the offence. Using an exploratory and descriptive analysis of the selected literature and focusing on specific cases, this project suggests that a negative cycle of rape myth acceptance is still persuasive and stems from court misconceptions into society and vice versa. While there are other reasons why low-reporting and low-conviction rates may occur, the role that rape myth acceptance plays within the court's system has a significant impact on how sexual assault cases are dealt with and especially on how they are damaging to current and future victims. While this project’s primary focus is on an institutional level (the court system), it also highlights the importance of resolving this issue on a societal level as it affects everyone. Due to the negative effects of rape myth acceptance, this project also makes recommendations about how to better educate our society as well as ensure justice professionals are continuously educated and consciences about sexual assault, its victims, and its laws

    The Effects of Video Game Sales on Violent Crime Rates in Canada

    Video games are a relatively new phenomenon, and as such there has been a plethora of research done to help understand the effects of video games. When it comes to the influence of video games on violent crime, there has been much research on the topic but with little consensus. Additionally, the existing literature cannot provide any conclusive evidence, with some stating that video games influence violent behavior and others stating the opposite. This paper attempts to contribute to the research by trying to answer the question of whether an increase in video game sales can influence increases in violent behavior. A quantitative approach was used, analyzing popular video game sales as well as violent crime rates in Canada to find a relationship between the two variables. It was found that increases in video game sales have led to increases in violent crime rates. This can help influence policy makers on making laws and policies that affect video games in the future, such as stricter regulations for purchasing violent video games

    Spatiotemporal evolutionary dynamics and biological response of mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in western Canada after range expansion

    Global ecosystems are increasingly affected by climate change leading to alterations in expected disturbance regimes. Outbreaks of irruptive insect pests represent some of the most destructive disturbance events possible that occur in the forests of North America. The mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) (MPB), an irruptive tree-killing pest of several species of pine, is responsible for the most damaging insect outbreak in recent history in western Canada, leading to a massive range expansion from established territory in British Columbia to pine stands in central and northern Alberta during the mid-2000s. The adaptive genetic structure of these new populations is relatively unknown a decade after range expansion and the selective response of the beetle to novel habitats is likewise understudied. There is increasing concern among forestry stakeholders that MPB may develop novel genetic traits or behaviours in response to their new habitat. In this study, I sampled beetle DNA and used double-digest restriction fragment genotyping-by-sequencing to generate single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) loci. I used these data to investigate the establishment of genetic structure throughout the newly expanded and historic MPB range. I identified two distinct genetic clusters, a southern cluster for beetles located south of Banff National Park and a northern for beetles located north of the park. The data presented here suggest that Jasper National Park and the surrounding region represents an area of admixture between the two genetic clusters, caused in part by the movement of beetles from both the north and the south. This area of admixture may have the potential to differentiate into a separate third genetic cluster. Outlier analysis indicated that several landscape variables including mean annual precipitation and relative humidity contributed to the selective pressures on MPB, while frost free period contributes to the genotypes of beetles from the expanded range in central and northern Alberta. We also found that novel colonized MPB sites caused by in-flights from BC to Alberta did not display changes in genetic structure from their source population. Semivoltine MPB new adults collected from a site within the admixed zone near Jasper National Park displayed accumulation of cryoprotectants in response to cooling autumn temperatures but are not capable of surviving below -30℃. This is the first time that new adults have been demonstrated to cold harden, but also indicates that beetles from the admixed zone are likely not displaying aberrant forms of dispersal, host selection, or cold tolerance. I propose that beetles within the expanded range are not experiencing extreme selection events that would lead to genetic changes that will cause notable colonization, gustation, or dispersal differences to that of their counterparts in the historical range of BC. Warming climate is likely to contribute to beetle survival throughout central and northern Alberta, however, MBP populations will likely reach an endemic state and display historically expected population cycling (endemic to epidemic to endemic) in the future. The homogenous nature of MPB genetic structure throughout the expanded range does not support the development of populations-specific control techniques
