Comparing two athletic recovery positions between maximum effort training intervals
No full textRecovery is an extremely important component of successful exercise and fitness both on the sports field, and throughout the life course. Fitness enthusiasts and athletes understand the importance of utilizing specific training regimes to realize optimal performance. Throughout time spent as coaches of various types and levels of sport, the authors have observed a consistent clash between common recovery positions recommended by coaches to their athletes: hands behind head (HBH), and hands on knees (HOK). As a coach or trainer, comprehension of how the body works when it comes to exercise recovery is imperative, because it allows them to tap more deeply into the athletic potential of their pupils. We will explore the functionality of HBH and HOK recovery positions using a slightly modified version of the classic Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT). It will incorporate a 30 second sprint followed by a 180 second HOK or HBH recovery period‚ work to rest ratio of 1:6‚ and one additional 30 second round of sprint style exercise following said recovery period.

Why is corporate governance important?
No full textCorporate governance is a system of relationships, rules, practices, and procedures
that assist organizations in being directed, controlled, and regulated by means of ensuring
an accountable leader, establishing policies and structures (transparency), maintaining
integrity, and implementing effective policies and procedures. Keeping a solid corporate
governance structure is essential for organizations to avoid fraud, corruption, and other
ethical lapses. The purpose of this study is to determine what makes corporate governance
breakdown and what its effects are. Does it lead to unethical behavior in organizations?
Identifying lessons learned from the breakdown of corporate governance allows the
organization to strengthen them.
The descriptive statistics collected via an expert-led survey analyzed expert
perspectives and experience reflections. Among the most critical factors contributing to
corporate governance breakdown in different industries were ineffective governance
mechanisms, including inadequate leadership, lack of transparency and accountability, lack
of commitment, weak board of directors, lacking ethical culture, and short-term financial
focus. The breakdown of corporate governance promotes unethical behaviors like corporate
fraud and corruption, ultimately negatively affecting an organization's reputation and
credibility. In addition to the expert-led survey, a case study examining the collapse of
Theranos Inc., a company once proclaimed to revolutionize health care but ultimately
collapsed because of fraud allegations. In many ways, Theranos constitutes an example of a
corporate governance system that is unsatisfactory, and the failure was attributed to poor
and unethical leadership, a low level of expert oversight, a secrecy culture, and a lack of
transparency at the highest level. This unethical behavior resulted in capital losses,
reputational damage, severe legal consequences, and, ultimately, the company's collapse.
Taking steps to address corporate governance failures and ineffective governance
mechanisms that cause such failures can involve external stakeholders, compliance
measures, and increased regulatory requirements. Strong regulatory frameworks, good

Forestry, fire and fur: Factors driving the decline of fishers (Pekania pennanti) in Central Interior British Columbia
No full textUnderstanding the factors driving the population dynamics of endangered species is critical to effective conservation. Demographic information on how environmental and anthropogenic influences affect a species distribution and abundance provides valuable information to wildlife managers looking to accurately assign conservation status, deploy limited resources efficiently, and set sustainable harvest levels. Unfortunately, obtaining detailed population data for rare and cryptic species that naturally occur at low densities is challenging, and in many cases not enough is known to develop appropriate conservation measures. One such species is the fisher (Pekania pennanti), a mid-sized mustelid considered a species-at-risk over much of its North American range.
Using a combination of DNA-based mark-recapture surveys and population viability analysis (PVA), I evaluated the factors driving the declines being seen in the geographically isolated and endangered Columbian population of fishers (Pekania pennanti) in central interior British Columbia (BC), Canada. I estimated the density and abundance of fishers in two spatially distinct ecosystems in central interior BC where current data were lacking, and assessed which ecological and anthropogenic factors best explained the distribution of fishers in each ecosystem. Additionally, I constructed population viability models to assess the specific impacts that trapping mortality would have on the persistence of the Columbian population of fishers under different trapping scenarios. I found the density of fishers in my two study areas varied substantially, primarily due to the level of trapping mortality occurring during each survey season. The density of fishers in the Chilcotin study area west of Williams Lake was among the highest ever reported for the province (~21 fishers/1000 km2), whereas density in the Enterprise study area south and east of Williams Lake was among the lowest (~9 fishers/1000 km2 ). Habitat covariates that best explained the density of fishers were similar between both study areas; forested stands with wet soil moisture regimes composed of older deciduous and spruce trees were most strongly related to higher densities in both the Chilcotin and Enterprise study areas. My population modelling suggests that if current mortality rates continue, including deaths from trapping, the Columbian population of fishers will likely be extirpated from central interior BC within two decades. In the absence of additional fur harvest mortality, the Columbian population appeared unlikely to persist beyond 37 years without additional measures being taken to increase female survival and reproductive output.
This study provides valuable information to wildlife managers looking to allocate limited resources to aid in the recovery of an isolated and endangered species in central interior BC. Conservation priorities for the Columbian population of fishers should focus on eliminating mortality from trapping, and protecting the high-value habitats the species requires to survive and reproduce.FisherPekania pennantidensitytrapping mortalitypopulation modellin
