    No full text
Oxidative stress is a primary mechanism of aging and is characterized by elevated levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). Natural antioxidants are being increasingly explored for the prevention of premature aging. The gonads of the sea urchin Diadema setosum contain bioactive compounds, including omega-3 fatty acids, flavonoids, and phenolics, which possess unique ecological adaptations that enhance secondary metabolite production, making them a promising marine antioxidant source. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of D. setosum gonad extract on MDA levels in male Wistar rats undergoing d-galactose-induced aging. An experimental post-test control group design was conducted from July to November 2024, involving 24 rats divided into four groups: standard control (K1), positive control (K2), and two treatment groups receiving extracts at doses of 100 mg/kg (P1) and 300 mg/kg (P2). D-galactose was used for aging at 150 mg/kg body weight for eight weeks, followed by oral administration of the extract for an additional eight weeks. MDA levels were measured using ELISA at weeks 0, 6, 10, and 14. The results showed a significant increase in MDA levels in the positive control group (K2) compared to the normal group (p=0.002), indicating oxidative stress induction. In contrast, treatment with D. setosum gonad extract, particularly in the P2 group, significantly reduced MDA levels (p<0.05), approaching those of the normal group. In conclusion, D. setosum gonad extract has potential as a natural antioxidant for suppressing oxidative stress associated with aging

    No full text
The Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) Program is a national initiative aimed at meeting students’ balanced nutritional needs. However, evidence on the adequacy of energy and nutrient intake from MBG menus for adolescents is limited. This study aimed to analyze the energy and nutrient adequacy of two MBG menu variants with and without milk based on the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for adolescents aged 16–18 years in Makassar. This cross-sectional study was conducted from August to September 2025 in four high schools that implemented the MBG program. Researchers conducted composite sampling of four daily menu items. Data were collected through menu observation and nutrient analysis using NutriSurvey. Univariate analyses were performed. The results indicated that the menu with milk provided 742 kcal (28% RDA) and 34.9 g of protein (46.5% RDA), whereas the menu without milk provided 610 kcal (23% RDA) and 28.4 g of protein (38% RDA). Both menus supplied more than 50% of the RDA for iron, but the carbohydrate contributions remained below 25% of the RDA. The low carbohydrate contribution suggests the need to adjust staple food portions in the MBG menu guidelines. In conclusion, the addition of milk improved the energy and protein adequacy of the MBG menus. The optimization of nutrient-dense local foods is recommended to support program sustainability and balanced nutrition in schools

Central obesity is characterized by increased visceral and subcutaneous fat and is associated with metabolic and hormonal disturbances in women. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between dietary fiber intake and visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, and sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG) levels in women with central obesity. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Kediri Raya region in August 2025. The sample consisted of 70 women aged 19–45 years with a waist circumference greater than 80 cm, selected through purposive and quota sampling methods. A Semi-Quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire was used to assess fiber intake. Visceral and subcutaneous fat were measured using Bioimpedance Analysis, and SHBG levels were obtained from blood samples. Statistical analyses included Pearson’s correlation, Fisher’s exact test, and multivariate linear regression adjusted for energy and macronutrient intakes. The results showed that fiber intake was significantly associated only with age (p= 0.026), but not with BMI, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, or SHBG (p > 0.05). Multivariate analysis indicated that the carbohydrate–fiber interaction was negatively associated with BMI (p= 0.038) and visceral fat (p= 0.011). Conversely, fat–fiber interactions were positively associated with BMI (p= 0.008), visceral fat (p= 0.006), and subcutaneous fat (p= 0.035). No significant association was found between fiber intake and SHBG levels (p > 0.05). In conclusion, fiber intake in interaction with macronutrients influenced BMI and body fat composition but did not affect SHBG levels, highlighting the role of nutrient interactions in shaping visceral and subcutaneous fat tissue
