Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic degenerative disease that requires lifelong management. Beyond biological, psychological, and social needs, spirituality is an essential dimension for individuals with chronic conditions. The number of individuals with diabetes in Padangsidimpuan has steadily increased, creating a burden on health services. This study aimed to explore the role of spirituality in the lives of patients with type 2 DM. A qualitative design with a phenomenological approach was applied, involving seven Muslim participants who met the inclusion criteria of no cognitive impairment, diagnosis for at least five years, a minimum bachelor’s education, and the ability to communicate effectively. The study was conducted in Padangsidimpuan from January to February 2025. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using a structured guide and analyzed using Colazzi’s method assisted by Open Code software. Three major themes and seven subthemes emerged: (1) Spirituality as motivation to live with diabetes (lifelong journey, spiritual motivation, acceptance of illness); (2) Nature as God’s creation to relieve problems (healing power of water, nature as divine solution); and (3) Harmonious human relationships to stabilize blood glucose (peace through social interaction, charity for better control). In conclusion, spirituality played a positive role in providing motivation, reinforcing life’s meaning, and fostering harmonious relationships with oneself, others, and the environment, thereby supporting better blood glucose control in patients with DM

Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and remains the leading cause of mortality globally. Non-pharmacological interventions using local functional foods are promising alternatives for blood pressure management. SOYDRA pudding, a novel combination of soymilk and red dragon fruit, contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, isoflavones, and dietary fiber, which are known to have antihypertensive properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of SOYDRA pudding as a dietary intervention on blood pressure in patients with grade 1 hypertension. A randomized crossover trial was conducted from September to November 2024 at the outpatient clinic of the Arosuka Hospital, West Sumatra. Thirty-two participants aged 40–60 years with grade 1 hypertension were included in this study. The intervention consisted of consuming SOYDRA puddings twice daily (2 × 150 g/day) along with nutritional education over a 30-day period. Blood pressure measurements were performed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the dependent t-test and Wilcoxon test. Results, there was a statistically significant reduction in systolic blood pressure from 146,3 ± 6,2 mmHg to 132,5 ± 5,9 mmHg (p = 0,000) and in diastolic blood pressure from 92,7 ± 4,8 mmHg to 84,1 ± 4,2 mmHg (p = 0,000) after the 30-day intervention. In conclusion, the administration of the SOYDRA pudding at a dose of 2 × 150 g/day for 30 days significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with hypertension. These findings highlight the potential of functional food-based dietary strategies in non-pharmacological hypertension management

The incidence of hypertension in Indonesia is increasing, affecting not only the elderly population but also young adults aged 18–39 years. Prehypertension is an early indicator of hypertension; however, the application of fruit-based interventions remains limited. Bananas, particularly their peels, are abundant in nutrients and bioactive compounds that may mitigate hypertension. This study aimed to assess the impact of banana peel smoothing on blood pressure in individuals with prehypertension. A quasi-experimental pre-post-test design was employed. Thirty-two participants were screened and equally divided into two groups: one receiving banana fruit smoothies, and the other receiving banana peel smoothies. The study was conducted from February to March 2024 at the Faculty of Agriculture, Siliwangi University, Tasikmalaya, West Java. Blood pressure measurements were obtained before and after the intervention, and the data were analyzed using a paired t-test. Both banana fruit and banana peel smoothies significantly reduced blood pressure (p= 0,000) in both interventions. In conclusion, banana peel smoothies exhibited greater efficacy in lowering blood pressure in prehypertensive individuals than banana fruit. Banana peel smoothies represent an effective intervention for reducing blood pressure in prehypertensive individuals, offering a promising and nutrient-rich approach for hypertension management

TG/HDL-C ratio as a risk marker for metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis in adolescents aged 15-18 years in Indonesia

Metabolic syndrome is characterized by high levels of triglycerides, blood glucose, and blood pressure, along with low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and central obesity. The TG/HDL-C ratio is a quick and cost-effective marker of dyslipidemia and insulin resistance, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis. However, most studies on TG/HDL-C ratio in Indonesia have been limited to adolescent populations with distinct metabolic profiles and health risks. This study aimed to assess the correlation between metabolic syndrome risk and TG/HDL-C ratio as a marker of atherosclerosis risk in adolescents. This cross-sectional study was conducted at Batik 1 Senior High School Surakarta from October 2023 to March 2024. A total of 65 adolescents were selected using simple random sampling. The observed data included body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, HDL-C, metabolic syndrome risk, and atherosclerosis risk. Pearson and Spearman correlation tests were used for statistical analysis. The results showed A significant correlation was observed between TG/HDL-C ratio and atherosclerosis risk (p= 0,000), waist circumference (p= 0,009), systolic blood pressure (p= 0,001), and diastolic blood pressure (p= 0,000). However, no significant correlation was found between fasting blood glucose level (p= 0,905) and BAZ (p= 0,405). In conclusion, TG/HDL-C ratio can serve as a valuable indicator for assessing metabolic syndrome risk in adolescents, allowing for early intervention to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis

The prevalence of stunting cases in Aceh is still very high at 29,4% (2023).  One of the social factors that influence stunting is the local culture in feeding practices. This study aimed to determine the culture that influences feeding practices among children diagnosed with stunting. Qualitative research using ethnographic tools was conducted in Kota Sigli, Aceh in 2022. Data were collected through 112 hours of observation, semi-structured interviews with eight mothers of stunted children, and informal interviews with five community leaders. The data were analyzed using NVivo, and several themes were generated. Results: Child-feeding culture in Aceh plays a role in child growth, both positively and negatively. The tradition of peucicap with dates and breast milk contributes to gut health through the production of bacteriocins that inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. The 'rice and water' belief encourages breastfeeding from both breasts, increasing colostrum production. The consumption of star gooseberry leaves and banana rice mix contributes to increased weight gain in children. However, some practices, such as ie mom adék and poor hygiene habits, can have a negative impact. Meanwhile, other cultures, such as peutrôn tanôh and superstitious beliefs, tend to be neutral towards child growth. In conclusion, the local culture in Aceh influences the feeding of stunted children, with positive, negative, or neutral effects, depending on practices such as peucicap, consumption of star gooseberry leaves, or poor hygiene

Relationship between nutrient intake and iron levels of foremilk and hindmilk in breastfeeding mothers

Infants who are not exclusively breastfed are at a risk of iron deficiency. Iron deficiency affects motor development, intelligence, and endurance. Adequate nutrient intake can increase breast milk iron levels, because maternal food intake greatly affects the amount of iron in breast milk. This study aimed to determine the relationship between maternal nutrient intake and iron levels in the breast milk. This study used a cross-sectional approach from October to December 2024. The subjects were 90 mothers who breastfed babies aged 2-24 weeks, with a probability proportional to size. Nutrient intake and breast milk iron stage were the variables that were studied. Data were analyzed using the Pearson’s correlation test and multiple linear regression analysis. Results showed that foremilk iron levels ranged from 60,62 µg/dL to 632,94 µg/dL, while hindmilk iron levels varied from 127,44 µg/dL to 680,38 µg/dL. Iron intake was measured between 13,17 g and 115,6 g, showing a significant correlation between nutrient intake and breast milk (p < 0,05). In addition, it was found that breastfeeding mothers' iron intake was the most influential factor on the breast milk iron stage. In conclusion, maternal iron intake significantly affects breast milk iron levels. Ensuring adequate maternal iron intake, supported by vitamin C consumption, can help increase the availability of iron in breast milk, thereby benefiting infant growth and development
