    Opsoclonus Myoclonus Ataxia Syndrome

    This is a case of Opsoclonus Myoclonus Ataxia Syndrome. A 14-month-old girl presented with abnormal eye movements and ataxia. On evaluation, she had opsoclonus, axial and appendicular ataxia, head titubation, occasional myoclonic jerks, as well as sleep disturbance and irritability. MRI of the abdomen and pelvis demonstrated a right suprarenal mass concerning for neuroblastoma. This constellation of symptoms is consistent with opsoclonus myoclonus ataxia syndrome, which is an immune-mediated condition. 50% of patients with opsoclonus myoclonus ataxia syndrome have associated neuroblastic tumors (a common example is neuroblastoma). Removal of the tumor, if present, along with early and aggressive immunotherapy, such as IVIG, high-dose steroids, and rituximab, helps to improve motor and cognitive outcomes long-term

    honors thesisSchool of Biological SciencesBiologyMoriel ZelikowskySocial instability stress occurs when individuals lack a stable social circle, such as frequent moving due to job insecurity or children in the foster care system. Stress resulting from social instability-especially when chronic-poses a risk to humans\u27 socioemotional and physical health (Saavedra-Rodriguez & Feig, 2013). The neurobiological basis underlying this phenomenon is relatively unknown, and this study seeks to expand the current understanding of its biological framework. We suspect that oxytocin (OT) - a social neuropeptide known for its role in social bonding, childbirth, and lactation (Froemke & Young, 2021) - plays a major role in the stress response to social instability. To understand how OT signaling changes during social instability stress, we induce a stress response in mice using the social instability (SIN) stress paradigm and monitor the activation of the OT receptor (OxtR) using a novel GRABOT sensor and fiber photometry. The results will help us understand how OT signaling changes over the course of chronic social stress, with an expected increase in OT signaling in stressed mice. These findings may be useful in understanding how the brain responds to chronic social stress

    honors thesisCollege of EngineeringCivil & Environmental EngineeringRyan JohnsonSnow-water equivalent (SWE) is an important indicator of water supply in the western US, but its estimation is complicated by limited observations and heterogeneous snow distributions. Machine Learning (ML) is a promising method to advance the current state of practice. The Snow-Water Equivalent ML version 2.0 (SWEMLv2.0) is a ML mapping tool developed to improve spatiotemporally continuous SWE estimates for key water-supplying catchments in montane regions. However, lack of data still poses a challenge to ML models, which generally struggle in new situations. The literature suggests that predictive performance for a given location improves with the number of location images in training data. To gain insight into the trade-off between quantity of training data and predictive performance for SWEMLv2.0, we perform a hold-one-out training procedure by removing key images from model training and assessing model skill on the held-out dates. The SWEMLv2.0 ML model implements an XGBoost algorithm that utilizes publicly available data to train and make predictions. The model\u27s SWE prediction abilities are promising, performing best in locations with multiple Airborne Snow Observatory (ASO) images. Overall, the research demonstrates the potential for a highly trained hybrid ML model to improve SWE estimations in the mountain West

Designing technology for patients experiencing DoC is littered with ethical and technical challenges, but previous advancements in hospital automation and other use cases of Internet-of- Things based technology in a hospital suggest that pushing towards the automation of Sensory Stimulation (SS) aspects may improve efficiency for hospital workers and increase the standard of care for DoC patients.     Social support and psychosocial health among cancer patients in Malawi: a cross-sectional analysis

As cancer incidence continues to rise in low- and middle-income countries (LMICS), patients encounter systemic and sociocultural barriers-such as stigma, social isolation, and emotional distress-that can undermine engagement with care. This study aimed to describe the social support experienced by individuals undergoing cancer treatment in Malawi and examine how emotional, informational, and instrumental support influence psychosocial outcomes. Methods: Cancer patients (n=100) at a tertiary referral center in Lilongwe, Malawi were enrolled between January and April 2024 and completed a structured survey. Social support was measured using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) measures of emotional, informational, and instrumental support. The survey also included assessments of depression, anxiety, resiliency/post-traumatic growth, and cancer-related stigma. After describing social support, we used Spearman\u27s correlation coefficients (⍴) to investigate associations between the three domains of social support (emotional, informational, instrumental) and psychosocial outcomes (depression, anxiety, resiliency/post-traumatic growth, and cancer-related stigma). Results: Instrumental support was the most reported form of social support, while informational support was reported least frequently. All three domains of social support were significantly correlated with psychosocial outcomes. Higher levels of social support were associated with lower levels of depression, anxiety, and cancer-related stigma, as well as increased resiliency/post-traumatic growth. Conclusions: Social support is a key determinant of psychosocial outcomes among cancer patients in Malawi. However, a considerable proportion of patients reported limited access to social support, indicating a critical need for intervention. Culturally sensitive approaches that enhance emotional, informational, and instrumental support through peer-counseling, support groups, and stigma-reduction campaigns could improve psychological well-being, promote engagement with care, and contribute to better cancer outcomes
