    Effect of rumen-protected methionine supplementation to beef cows during the periconception period on performance of cows, calves, and subsequent offspring

    Maternal nutrition affects the development of the fetus and postnatal performance of the calf. Methionine may play a critical role in developmental programming and is likely deficient in beef cows fed low-quality forage. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of metabolizable methionine supply to lactating beef cows during the periconception period on performance of cows, calves, and subsequent offspring. This project involved two consecutive production cycles commencing at calving in which dietary treatments were fed to cows during the periconception period along with measurements on cows and initial calves in Production Cycle 1, and measurements on subsequent calves in Production Cycle 2. Brangus-Angus crossbred lactating beef cows (N = 108; age = 6.4 (2.8) year) were stratified by previous calving date and assigned to one of three supplements: (1) control, molasses plus urea at 2.72 kg/day as fed, (2) fishmeal, 2.27 kg/day molasses plus urea plus 0.33 kg/day as fed of fishmeal, and (3) methionine, 2.72 kg/day of molasses plus urea plus 9.5 g/day of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)-butanoic acid. Cows were fed supplements and low-quality limpograss (Hemarthria altissima) hay while grazing dormant bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flüggé) pastures during the 115-day periconception period from December 2014 to April 2015 in Production Cycle 1 only. Body weight change and milk yield of cows were measured during the periconception period in Production Cycle 1. Body weight of calves was measured at birth and weaning in both production cycles. Following weaning in Production Cycle 2, eight subsequent steer calves per treatment were individually housed for a 42-day metabolism experiment. Treatment did not affect (P \u3e 0.10) BW change of cows, but cows fed methionine tended (P = 0.09) to produce more energy-corrected milk than control and fishmeal. Treatment did not affect (P \u3e 0.10) 205-day adjusted weaning weight of calves in either production cycle. During the metabolism experiment, subsequent calves from dams fed fishmeal and methionine gained faster (P \u3c 0.05) and had greater (P \u3c 0.05) gain:feed than control calves. Methionine calves tended (P = 0.06) to have greater apparent total tract NDF and ADF digestibility and lesser (P \u3c 0.05) blood glucose concentration than control and fishmeal calves. These data indicate that maternal methionine supply during the periconception period plays an important role in programming future performance of the offspring

    Structural interpretation of the Igherm region (Western Anti Atlas, Morocco) from an aeromagnetic analysis: Implications for copper exploration

    Aeromagnetic data were analyzed, constrained by geological and ore deposit mapping to investigate possible regions within the Igherm inlier region of the Anti-Atlas in western Morocco that are favorable for more detailed copper exploration. The aeromagnetic data were investigated by creating reduction to the pole (RTP), upward continuation and tilt-angle anomaly maps. Additionally, depths to magnetic susceptibility sources were estimated using three-dimensional Euler deconvolution and tilt-angle depth methods. The RTP map indicated several anomalous regions where magnetic maxima can be related to Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic metamorphic and volcanic rocks located between the uplifted regions in the northern portion of the Igherm inlier region. The western portion of the study area is characterized by short wavelength, NE-trending magnetic maxima that are related to Pan-African orogeny volcanic units. Derivative maps indicate that the majority of the lineaments are NE-trending probably related to post Pan-African rifting. However, there are several NW- and E-trending lineaments related to the Variscan orogeny. The depths of the sources of these lineaments range between 100 m and 5200 m, with the deeper depths mainly trending toward the northeast. Using the derivative analysis, RTP, magnetically determined depth estimates and the nature of known copper deposits in the region (e.g., Tizert deposit), several regions were determined to be favorable for more detailed mineral exploration. These regions are located along the edges of Proterozoic uplifts where paleobasins containing Basal Series sediments have been affected by mainly NE-trending faults that act as conduits for deeper magmatically formed ore-rich fluids

    Life-Writing in an Age of Postmodernism: A Corderian Rhetoric of Creative Nonfiction

    In the lifeworld that we experience from within and share with others, there are some things that we don’t know, some things that we can’t know, some things that we don’t need to know, and some things that we don’t want to know (or, perhaps, to admit). Parsing these differences marks the delicate artistry of creative nonfiction (CNF). Whereas fiction (as figured in the contemporary novel) has less need to censor its depictions of character, creative nonfiction must balance honesty (toward one’s subject) with authenticity (toward oneself), intimacy (toward one’s reader), and privacy (toward details of one’s lifeworld). Embracing an “ethic of care” (Nussbaum; Noddings) aids the CNF author in balancing these competing claims: It is not “the Truth,” but health and community, that contemporary CNF seeks in its narrative artistry. For a model of successful CNF, this paper turns to Jim W. Corder, a late-20th century pioneer in postmodernist life-writing. Fusing Corderian rhetoric with an ethic of care, this essay ends with a series of aphorisms supportive of Corderian practice. Along the way, it makes use of Corder’s own scholarly habit of autoethnography—that is, of incorporating personal narrative within cultural/textual analysis

    On A Model Of Covid-19 Dynamics

    A model of COVID-19 in an interconnected network of commu-nities is studied. This model considers the dynamics of susceptible, asymp-tomatic and symptomatic individuals, deceased but not yet buried people, as well as the dynamics of the virus or pathogen at connected nodes or com-munities. People can move between communities carrying the virus to any node in the region of n communities (or patches). This model considers both virus direct (person to person) and indirect (contaminated environment to person) transmissions. Using either matrix and graph-theoretic methods and some combinatorial identities, appropriate Lyapunov functions are constructed to study global stability properties of both the disease-free and the endemic equilibrium of the corresponding system of 5n differential equations

    Looking into the cradle of the grave: J22564-5910, a potential young post-merger hot subdwarf

    Context: We present the discovery of J22564-5910, a new type of hot subdwarf (sdB) which shows evidence of gas present in the system and it has shallow, multi-peaked hydrogen and helium lines which vary in shape over time. All observational evidence points towards J22564-5910 being observed very shortly after the merger phase that formed it. Aims: Using high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy, combined with multi-band photometry, Gaia astrometry, and TESS light curves, we aim to interpret these unusual spectral features. Methods: The photometry, spectra, and light curves were all analysed, and their results were combined in order to support our interpretation of the observations: the likely presence of a magnetic field combined with gas features around the sdB. Based on the triple-peaked H lines, the magnetic field strength was estimated and, by using the SHELLSPEC code, qualitative models of gas configurations were fitted to the observations. Results: All observations can either be explained by a magnetic field of ∼650 kG, which enables the formation of a centrifugal magnetosphere, or a non-magnetic hot subdwarf surrounded by a circumstellar gas disc or torus. Both scenarios are not mutually exclusive and both can be explained by a recent merger. Conclusions: J22564-5910 is the first object of its kind. It is a rapidly spinning sdB with gas still present in the system. It is the first post-merger star observed this early after the merger event, and as such it is very valuable system to test merger theories. If the magnetic field can be confirmed, it is not only the first magnetic sdB, but it hosts the strongest magnetic field ever found in a pre-white dwarf object. Thus, it could represent the long sought-after immediate ancestor of strongly magnetic white dwarfs

    Building Capacity to Alleviate Poverty through National Service: An Evaluation Plan Guided by Community Partner Perspectives

    This paper explores how a national service program, the Mid-South VISTA Project (MSVP), impacts community partner organizations through capacity building activities. MSVP is housed at Mid-South University and extends the community-engaged activities of campus units and while building capacity at partner organizations. The project considers dimensions of nonprofit capacity building, navigating the community-campus partnership process, and the legacy of the VISTA program. The data presented here are part of a larger case study of how programs housed at MSU’s community engagement center impact community partner organizations. Findings from interviews with fifteen VISTA supervisors guide the development of an evaluation plan that uses logic model domains to center mission alignment and reciprocity as outcomes of the partnership process

    Theoretical basis Brands are socially constructed (Askegaard, 2006) and are culturally dependent on the “cultural codes of branding” by taking into consideration the history, images and myths that can influence brand meaning (Schroeder, 2009). Brands can be of great value when they hold a favorable image in the consumer’s mind (Anholt, 2010). Regional differences and demographics can impact what has a favorable image in the consumer’s mind and can bias the expectancy set for consumers. When selecting a brand name, the SMILE and SCRATCH test should be used (Neck et al., 2018; Watkins, 2014). This name evaluation test can be used to assess the strength of a brand name. If the name has these five qualities, it should be kept, or you should “smile”: suggestive – it evokes positivity; meaningful – customers can understand it; imagery – it is visually memorable; legs – it lends itself well to a theme to run with; and emotional – it resonates with your market. On the contrary, if the name has any of these traits, it should be “scratched”: spelling-challenged – it is hard to spell; copycat – it is too similar to competitors’ names; restrictive – it would be hard to grow or evolve with; annoying – it is annoying; tame – it is lame or uninspired; curse of knowledge – only insiders or some people will understand it; and hard-to-pronounce – it is hard to say (Neck et al., 2018; Watkins, 2014). The marketing mix or 4P’s of marketing – product, price, promotion and place – is a set of tools business owners can use to achieve their marketing goals and is based on McCarthy’s (1960) work. The S.A.V.E. framework – solution, access, value and education (Ettenson et al., 2013) – has more recently been cited as a more modern replacement to the long used 4P’s model (Ettenson et al., 2013). Through this framework, business owners can work to align their brand to provide a solution to customers’ problems, give them access to the solution, provide value for customers and educate them about the product or service. The S.A.V.E. framework focuses on solutions, access, value and education rather than product, place, price and promotion. In this framework, the business should focus on meeting their customers’ needs and being accessible to customers along their entire journey from hearing about the company to making a purchase. Additionally, companies should provide value for their customers rather than solely worrying about price, and instead educate customers by providing information they care about (Ettenson et al., 2013; Neck et al., 2018). Research methodology Teaching case. Case overview/synopsis This case presents the story of Big Momma’s, a coffee shop in a deteriorated historic district in Springfield, Missouri. Big Momma’s owner Lyle, a black man in a predominantly white region, was new to the area and launched the business quickly, without much market testing of the concept or brand. Soon after launching, Lyle wondered if he was set up for doom as customers constantly ask for Momma or barbeque. It seemed necessary to take a critical look at the marketing and branding plans. Complexity academic level This case could have multiple uses, primarily for early stage undergraduate students studying entrepreneurship or integrated marketing communications. The case lines up nicely with the following textbook lessons. Entrepreneurship: the case can be used with Entrepreneurship: The Practice and Mindset (Neck et al., 2018), chapter 16, lesson on branding with a specific tie to the SMILE and SCRATCH test described in Table 16.1 and the S.A.V.E. framework described on pages 453–454. It can also be used with Entrepreneurship (Zacharakis et al., 2018), chapter 6, lesson on marketing strategy for entrepreneurs with a specific tie to the sections on marketing mix and value proposition described on pages 183–198. Integrated marketing communications: this case can be used with Advertising, Promotion, and Other Aspects of Integrated Marketing Communications (Shrimp and Andrews, 2013), chapter 3, lesson on brand naming.     It Takes a Tiny House Village: a Comparative Case Study of Barriers and Strategies for the Integration of Tiny House Villages for Homeless Persons in Missouri

    Although interest in addressing homelessness with tiny house villages continues to grow, they face numerous barriers, from land use laws to resident concerns about homeless populations. This research examines such barriers, in addition to strategies for the integration of such developments. The study finds that it is important that tiny house villages for homeless residents address potential NIMBY (Not-in-my-backyard) concerns. However, the study also finds that there are strategies and enabling factors which facilitate the integration of these developments. The study has resulted in the establishment of strategies for integrating tiny house villages for the homeless into communities
