Identification of QTLs for Berry Acids and Sugar in a Vitis aestivalis-Derived \u27Norton\u27-Based Population

    No full text
Acidity and sugar content are among the grape berry quality traits that influence wine quality. Despite advantageous environmental tolerances of Vitis aestivalis-derived ‘Norton’, its acid and sugar concentrations often deviate from expectations set for V. vinifera. Identification of the genetic determinants of malic acid, tartaric acid, pH, and total soluble solids (TSS) can assist in the improvement of new hybrid cultivars. For this purpose, a ‘Norton’ and V. vinifera ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ hybrid mapping population containing 223 individuals was used to construct a linkage map containing 384 simple sequence repeat (SSR) and 2084 genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS)-derived single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. The resulting map was 1441.9 cM in length with an average inter-marker distance of 0.75 cM and spanned 19 linkage groups (LGs). Quantitative trait loci (QTL) were detected for malic acid, tartaric acid, and pH. QTLs for malic acid (LG 8) and pH (LG 6) were observed across multiple years and explained approximately 17.7% and 18.5% of the phenotypic variation, respectively. Additionally, QTLs for tartaric acid were identified on linkage groups 1, 6, 7, 9, and 17 in single-year data. The QTLs for tartaric acid explained between 8.8-14.3% of the phenotypic variation. The markers linked to these QTLs can be used to improve hybrid cultivar breeding through marker-assisted selection

Modeling of Argon Bombardment and Densification of Low Temperature Organic Precursors Using Reactive MD Simulations and Machine Learning

    No full text
In this study, an important aspect of the synthesis process for a-BxC:Hy was systematically modeled by utilizing the Reactive Molecular Dynamics (MD) in modeling the argon bombardment from the orthocarborane molecules as the precursor. The MD simulations are used to assess the dynamics associated with the free radicals that result from the ion bombardment. By applying the Data Mining/Machine Learning analysis into the datasets generated from the large reactive MD simulations, I was able to identify and quality the kinetics of these radicals. Overall, this approach allows for a better understanding of the overall mechanism at the atomistic level of Ar bombardment and the role of radical species towards the formation of the orthocarborane network and in turn the boron carbide thin film

Geology of the Clairmont Springs 7.5-Minute Quadrangle and Geochronology of the Alabama Blue Ridge

    No full text
The Alabama Blue Ridge (USA) of the southern Appalachians contains metamorphic rocks and structures associated with island arc accretion and continent-continent collision that record the Acadian and Alleghenian orogenies. The western Blue Ridge is underlain by Cambrian to Mississippian, clastic and carbonate, low-grade, greenschist facies metamorphic Talladega belt that formed outboard from the Alabama promontory or along the Laurentian margin. The eastern Blue Ridge contains the Neoproterozoic to Paleozoic, lithologically diverse, high grade, middle to upper amphibolite facies Ashland Supergroup. Geologic mapping of the Clairmont Springs 7.5- minute quadrangle unveils tectonic relationships between the eastern and western Blue Ridge and U-Pb zircon geochronology constrains the timing of metamorphism of strata and Neoacadian-Alleghenian thrust fault development; and unveils new information on the relationship between the Appalachian foreland and hinterland. A complex partitioning of deformation model is proposed to account for out-of-sequence fault movement and Taconic to Alleghenian metamorphic ages

A Pedagogical Note on Modified Internal Rate of Return

Practitioners prefer IRR over NPV, despite the advocated superiority of the NPV method in financial literature. We illustrate that academics have devised a percentage evaluator, MIRR, that is better than the regular IRR. We then describe inadequate coverage of MIRR in most established corporate finance texts, given its worthy qualities. Future students of corporate finance should be equipped with this viable analysis method in light of increasing ease of use of electronic spreadsheets. We provide information and suggestions for using the MIRR function in currently available spreadsheets. We also provide recommendations for makers of financial calculators and for future surveys. Transition of living arrangement and cognitive impairment status among chinese older adults: Are they associated?

    No full text
Background and Objectives: Living arrangement is a crucial factor for older adults’ health. It is even more critical for Chinese older adults due to the tradition of filial piety. With the aging of China’s population, the prevalence of cognitive impairment among older adults has increased. This study examines the association between living arrangement transition and cognitive function among Chinese older adults. Materials and Methods: Using three waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS; 2008–2009, 2011–2012, and 2014), we analyzed data for older adults (age ≥ 65) who lived with other household members and reported good cognitive function or mild cognitive impairment when they participated in the survey. Multistate Cox regression was employed to study changes in cognitive function. Results: Older adults who transitioned to living alone had lower risk of cognitive impairment (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.66, 95% CI: 0.52, 0.83; p \u3c 0.01), compared with those who continued to live with other household members. Moving into an institution was also not associated with cognitive impairment. Conclusions: With older adults’ transition to living alone, public health practitioners or social workers might educate them on the benefits of such a living arrangement for cognitive function

Youth identified with emotional disturbance who exhibit aggression: Perspectives on origins and options for intervention

    No full text
The most common behaviors eliciting a student referral for special education evaluation related to emotional disturbance (ED) are adult- and peer-targeted aggression. Curiously, the word aggression, which is an externalizing behavior, does not appear anywhere in the federal description of ED. Despite the lack of clarity surrounding definitions, as well as issues of identification for special education services, aggression in schools is a public health concern and the concept deserves researchers’ and teachers’ attention. The purpose of this article is to (a) briefly review the context of aggression in schools, (b) discuss historical conceptualizations of aggression in society, and (c) provide readers with recommendations for dealing with aggression manifested by students with ED in school

Trajectories of relational turbulence and affectionate communication across the post-deployment transition

    No full text
Affectionate communication may play a key role in how military couples navigate the transition from deployment to reintegration. Informed by relational turbulence theory, this study considered how the trajectory of relational turbulence experienced by military couples over time predicted their verbal and nonverbal expressions of affection. Online self-report data were gathered from 268 U.S. military couples across eight months beginning at homecoming. Relational turbulence increased over time and affectionate communication decreased over time. Also as predicted, the trajectory of increasing relational turbulence corresponded with greater declines in verbal and nonverbal expressions of affection. These results advance relational turbulence theory, illuminate the trajectory of affectionate communication over time, and inform ways to assist military couples upon reunion after deployment

Validation of a Four Factor Measure: Scale of Perceived Instructor Support

    No full text
Academic-related stressors are common for college students, such as future career decisions or pressures to succeed academically. Furthermore, the impact of health and finance issues may add to the burden. Perceived support from an academic community, peers, or family can provide a buffer to mitigate the effects of these stressors. Several studies have emphasized the importance of support by instructors in particular and found that students’ perceptions of instructor support can counteract academic stress and promote retention. The purpose of the present study was to validate a scale for instructor support, which consisted of four factors: autonomy, expectation, interpersonal relationships, and engagement. A confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated good fit for the items within each factor. Results also indicated that students who planned to return to the university next semester were more likely to report higher levels of autonomy and expectation. The Scale of Perceived Instructor Support (SPIS) is a short, 24 item-inventory that can be used by faculty advisors as part of a formal advising practice or informally by class instructors

Defining a Region, the Great River Road

    No full text
The Great River Road (GRR) is a set of scenic byways connecting the headwaters of the Mississippi River in Minnesota to its mouth in Louisiana. This route follows both the East and West banks of the river through the heartland of the United States. Since the 1970s, the GRR has been established as a tourism corridor for both domestic and foreign travelers. The GRR’s intended purpose is to enhance local economic development through showcasing the Mississippi-regional culture and its natural environment. Chapter One analyzes data based on industry, occupation, education, and demographics to attempts to identify the economic and social boundaries of the GRR region in Missouri. Spatial representation and hot spot analysis using the Getis-Ord GI ArcGIS tool helped to determine a more concise socio-economic GRR region in the state of Missouri. Chapter Two applies finding from chapter one and applies it to the entire extent of the GRR. United States census data was used to assess the entire GRR region where data pertains to social, economic, housing, and demographic characteristics results from Chapter two help determine a socio-economic border for the GRR along the Mississippi River
